Hawks Lose Another Close Game to Cuero, 3-1

Canyon Lake continued their District 26-4A Season in a bad dream as another close loss to Cuero moves the Hawks record to 0-4 in district play losing, 3-1.

“We will need to stay together as a team,” Head Coach John Gallagher calculated after the loss. “We stranded way too many runners and we just got to score.”

On how important this next week will be, “Everybody is upbeat all of the girls know we can turn this around.”

The Hawks are the best 0-4 team in Texas as this talented group just needs a few good things to happen in order to turn this tide.

Canyon Lake has now gone 5 games without scoring in one of the first 3 innings. Those slow starts have proven to be a hard hole to climb out of.

A .171 batting average in the past 5 contests will attest to how bad this slump has become as CL pitching has an impressive 1.13 ERA, over that same time period.

Unfortunately for the pitchers, they can have two variables that can cancel that earned run average which comes in the form of errors and bats that don’t produce.

Hence, another close loss for Canyon Lake as they will enter their last 2 games of the first round and needing a turn-around in the win column.

Cuero had their best and last hit of the game in the 3rd inning helping the Gobblers to a 3 run lead that would stand up for the remainder of the game.

CL left 4 runners in scoring position in those last two innings that were ended with strike-outs.

The Gobbler pitcher, Regan Dunn, finished by striking out 17 Hawks and putting the ball in play was a chore.

There have been some inklings of seeing a chance of breaking out of the noodle bats as Kirsten Jones had a 3 hit game and was the only Hawk not to strike out.

Carly Dubois has a .462 average over the 4 game losing streak but seeing just two other Hawks with an average over
.300 does not instill fear in your opponent.

Another good sign of good things coming is coming from behind the plate as, Kat Weber has thrown out 5 base runners in the past few games and is one of those CL player’s with a .300 average.

On one play, Weber, made a play on a bunt in the last inning that helped keep the game within striking distance.

That was a perfect bunt that rolled far enough that Weber was ‘Cat’ like in getting to the ball and just beating the runner with her throw.

“I have done a lot and dedicated myself to the position,” Catcher Weber said. “That work is starting to payoff.”

If Weber can continue to get runners trying to steal a base then those opposing teams will know they will have to be fast with a chance for an out if they attempt moving up a base.

“I will stay aggressive with my throws,” Weber said in response on how some throws might be scary, especially throwing to 3rd and 1st base. “Some of those throws were not as accurate during the first of the season, but I have shown that I can keep being aggressive.”

Canyon Lake has had 3 catchers in their history and all three were top notch as Katy Payne started the legacy as it was continued with Brianna Young. Now Weber has helped CL to not miss a beat at one of the most important positions on the diamond.

Canyon Lake outhit Cuero by 5 singles which is also one more item that must get better as this first round gets interesting.

Only one double in those 21 hits in district, posing another problem in figuring out this part of the Hawks game.

District 26-4A is one of the tightest group of teams as there is not much separation among these schools giving hope that this coming Tuesday, Canyon Lake will face Wimberley in trying to turn this season into a positive.
