MVMS Softball Hates to Lose, Beat Canyon, 8-0
Marley Carrizales and Maddy Puente next stop will be at Canyon Lake HS
Mountain Valley Hawks dam up Canyon to make a Lake in 8-0 victory to remain undefeated this season.
MV now has a 7-0 record going into their last game this Saturday with a chance of finishing this season with an unblemished record.
“They all hate to lose,” Head Coach Jacque Scott said lovingly. “It takes a lot of hard work in practice and they have grown as a team.”
Coach Scott continued, “They have all done a great job and by working hard they have definitely been a team thing.”
A paltry 2 hits was all Canyon could muster in this loss as Mountain Valley’s defense kept the water from spilling over as each facet of the Hawk’s game was in high gear.
Starting pitcher, Maddy Puente was on this night and helped start what would turn out to be a dominant performance as she has a chance of having her sister, Kaylee Puente as her catcher.
“I just focus and give it my all,” Maddy Puente stated. “I don’t like to lose and when I get frustrated then I don’t like that.”
Frustration can be in the form of not hitting your spots and walking batters and neither was a problem against Canyon Middle School.

“I know if I have her back and she is pitching good, then I can catch good,” Kaylee Puente said like a younger sister. “I play select (softball) and this allows me to get more aggressive and it is a different style and that gives me a chance for handling those differences.”
MV got all the offense needed with a 3 run first inning as each at bat but one was productive as a sacrifice bunt and sacrifice fly accumulated two of the outs giving Canyon a sample of how hard this game would be.
In the 6th inning, Mountain Valley showed off their defensive prowless when each out had 3 of the infield players getting an out.
With that first out, short stop Marley Carrizales had a scoop and throw that brought the home crowd to their feet as those type of plays are usually seen on high school varsity teams.
“I’m not thinking,” Carrizales said in response to what is going through her head when plays are needed to get the outs. “I just get the ball and throw it….nothing runs through my mind, just getting her out.”
On how this team can field at a high level, Carrizales responded, “We just think about getting things done and then it is a good thing to stay with our fundamentals.”
Then second baseman Kenzie Sayles covered enough ground to turn in a play that rivaled Carrizales ground ball out.

Not to be outdone, third baseman Adrianna Peaslee snagged a hard line drive for the third out. Take into note that the hot box gets even hotter when that player is playing just a few feet from the batter.
That impressive inning of defense allowed pitcher Maddy Puente into having just 5 pitches.
Wow, a good defensive team coupled with a solid pitching performance can take pressure off for team on many game nights.
“When we are on defense and Maddy (Puente) gets a first strike then that helps us keep on rolling,” Carrizales said succinctly. “When we finish the inning with a defensive stellar play then it helps us to keep on rolling.”
On this night, the Hawks rolled with pitching and 11 hits, getting the trifecta on how to dominate a softball game.
There is a reason why this Mountain Valley team is undefeated as this win just adds to another of many sports that the Hawks have dominated while in middle school.
Getting to take their act to high school will be next for many of these players as Head HS Coach, John Gallagher did not have to use his lights to get home as his smiling teeth supplied all that was needed to see the road.
Maddy Puente had a first batter walk and then proceeded to get 9 straight outs before giving up her first hit to start the 4th inning.
Puente would finish her night with 6 consecutive outs as she only allowed 3 baserunners for the game and finished her stint in the circle with an 8 run lead and the game in hand.
Depth would be there for MV as Kaitlyn Keltner finished this game with a scoreless 7th inning against the visitors.
Mountain Valley averaged 9 pitches per inning showing how good this team is on the diamond.
One other aspect of the dominance of Mountain Valley can be seen in how all the batters in their lineup not being classified as an easy out.
Hits were recorded up and down the batting order, as the Hawks reached base on 58% of their at bats, which translates into scoring runs. Yes, runs is the name of the game but for Mountain Valley there was no weakness in their defense or pitching either. Trifecta!!
Jessie Melendez, Maddy Puente, and Carrizales all finished with two hits keeping the pressure on Canyon and not letting up until the last out was recorded.
Yes, there has been a couple of close games this season but when you have 3 most important parts of your game working then on those evenings one part does not work, then those other 2 will suffice in getting a win.

Mountain Valley will play their last game this Saturday at 1pm, against Smithson Valley.
A win or loss will not matter with this group of ladies as they have already clinched a Championship.
