First Scrimmage against Smithville is in the Books

Ben Fulton will be starting his 3rd year in less than 2 weeks against Blanco.

Canyon Lake’s first scrimmage is in the book as the Hawk start their football exhibition
season. The 1st Team scored multiple touchdowns coming away with a win over Smithville.

“It was good work for us,” Head Coach Charley Drum said. “It got sloppy at the end with blown assignments and poor tackling.”

The heat of the day was apparent as the end, having a welcome relief of shade, helping cool off the scorcher scrimmage.

“We are right where we need to be,” Coach Drum continued. “We know we are good but we will continue to work because we want to be great!”

This year, Canyon Lake has two classes that have been winning for several years coming together to see just how well they could be as the season draws near.

The Hawks have several players that will be into their 3rd year of playing and one player that is starting his 4th season on the varsity.

Jacob Foster who finished last year as the District 28-4A MVP will be the anchor for CL for what might be another year to up their offensive numbers that the Hawks acquired last season.

“We want to finish everything this year,” Foster said like he had been around a while. “We played hard and left it on the field and just laid it all out there.”

Foster also scrimmaged on the defensive side of the ball, which can give Canyon Lake a head start in helping to improve the defense this year, “The defense played with high intensity….we want to be as good as last year, but better!”

         Go Hawks and Go Strong

How well the defense plays might be a better indicator on how this season might play out as last year’s offense was good but there were still some games that the offense was not clicking on all cylinders and having a defense that can respond with a shut-down game would help in those situations.

In 3 of those 4 losses, Canyon Lake had a sub-par offense for a half or the whole game.

Wimberley’s defense had the Hawks number last year while Giddings and Liberty Hill were able to win with a good defensive effort in the 2nd half of those games.

A good line will help on both sides of the ball and having Joseph Crisp and Brayden Hight returning after garnering All-District honors will be back to come to the aid of Foster on the line.

QB Ben Fulton will enter his 3rd year taking snaps which will help have a settling effect for the offense as Tanner Faris who had a All-District performance in the back field will be returning to continue his assault on the record book.

Country Comfort Supports Hawk’s Football

“Our offensive experience is there but will still need to fix things,” Fulton commented. “I am very excited for the start of this year and we will have to perform right now and today it was nice to have some big plays.”

Fulton was commenting on how many big or explosive plays the Hawks had in the Smithville scrimmage, “Everything was there but we still have some little things to fix as those mistakes will turn into big mistakes if we do not address them now.”

Canyon Lake will have another week of preparation for another scrimmage in La Vernia next week as the Hawks prepare for their season opener with Blanco in less than two weeks.
