CL Hawks Lift Weights in Win over Bandera, 66-55

Whatever the CL Hawks did on Friday will need to be repeated for their next contest against Wimberley after a Canyon Lake win over Bandera, 66-55.

“We played our best game in a month or so,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman quipped. “It was really good to see our guys have fun, play hard and compete like they are capable of….We just tried to get ourselves in the right frame of mind coming into the game, and i think, that really helped us….It was fun to watch and fun to coach.”

This game was for securing a spot in the playoffs and The Lake could not have picked a better time to get their act together.

Shooting 52% from the field was a good start and capping that off by making 14 out of 16 shots from the free throw line made this a fun contest to see and play.

The Hawks had averaged 30 points per contest in their last three outings and this would be a good coming out party as CL has now qualified for the playoffs for the 3rd straight season and will once again have a chance to go see if they can take the same path as their Lady Hawk counterparts who punched their ticket for a 3rd round game next week.

For comparison sake, CL was on the court against Boerne this past Tuesday for a contest that was completely different with dismal results. Granted, the Greyhounds are better than Bandera but playing a game similar in fervor and accuracy would have shown a different outcome.

CL had to be playing with a lid on their basket in those contests above. With some much needed confidence, Canyon Lake, will be taking their playoff season with some momentum and hopefully build on what was accomplished with this ‘play-in’ game.

Caimen McDonough came from the Hawk Relays on Wednesday where he totaled 25 points and almost matched that effort with a career high 20 points on this night. Perfect from the field and free throw line would make a good stat line.

McDonough added two assists and blocks after leading the team on the boards gathering 8 for the evening.

“Caimen was a beast,” Coach Chapman said. “He played really well on both ends of the floor and really dominated the game.”

Zack Taliaferro (12) and Parker Mott (19) would also reach double digit scoring to help compliment the points scored by McDonough.

Taliaferro almost achieved a double/double finishing with 8 assists and tallying 4 rebounds.

Mott scored inside the arc and outside the arc while making 6 of 8 free throws. This was a complete opposite result from his last contest when he was 0-fer on the night which was a first for this campaign.

“Parker played aggressively and played like his is capable of every night,” Coach Chapman heaped praise. “Zack (Taliaferro) had an unbelievable game and he lived in the paint all night, which created shots for him and for his teammates.”

Sam Schimank had been struggling all season after missing many games by injury. This type of contest is what was needed by this sharp shooter with his best game since his return scoring 7 points.

Ball handling would be another good omen with 16 turnovers and anytime you can stay below that 20 mark, it will give a team a chance for a victory.

Both teams had a good night scoring as their 39-35 score in that 2nd half was more than they scored in their second Bandera game in district play at CL two weeks ago.

Coach Chapman closed, “We had some guys come in and give us great minutes off the bench. Just really proud of the team effort and looking forward to more practices and the playoffs with these guys….It’s like a giant weight has been lifted off of us now, so hopefully we can just continue to play loose and have fun.”

CL will have a short drive to New Braunfels High School as they will be the 2nd game of a double header with a start time of 8:00pm against Wimberley, next Tuesday night.
