CL Hawk’s Whirlwind has Texans Going Wrong way On Back-Bone, 56-47

Canyon Lake started their game on one of those, Devil’s Backbone Curves, but finished coasting on the straight away to Hawk Land in win over Wimberley, 56-47.

“I was very pleased with how we amped it up in both halves,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman said. “They would go on runs and we would respond…our full-court man made them uncomfortable with the ball.”
The Texans took control early after the tip and had a 10-0 lead by the 3:38 mark of the first period of play. Four of those points came from the free-throw line. This start was eerily familiar to CL’s Boerne loss earlier this week.
Both teams finished this quarter scoring 6 points combined as the Back-Bone had these two combatants discombobulated…but Wimberley was in better shape sporting an 8 point advantage, 12-4.
The Lake’s first score came at the 3:05 mark when Parker Mott had a break away lay-up after a Trent MacRoberts steal for that first ice-breaking score.
Rylee Spaulding was a needed spark for the Hawks as this Big Man scored on a baseline assist from Rico Griffin.
“I would like a shout-out to Rylee (Spaulding),” Coach Chapman mentioned. “He came in and gave us some good minutes.”

That 8 point Texan lead increased to 11 points in the 2nd Quarter after more free throws and a 20-9 lead with still 4:47 left on the clock before half.
Wimberley was met with a whirlwind of Hawk activity during the rest of this period while CL outscored their counterpart, 14-1 going into halftime festivities.
That scoring spree came in the nick of time when Jeremy Duncan found Sam Schimank for a 3 pointer and then the flood gates opened up carving a Hawk barrage of points.
It started when Anthony Zavala made one of two free throws, then the crowd buckled in for a fun ride.

Canyon Lake was as hot as Wimberley was to start the game and a surprising Hawk lead.

Starting that 2nd Half, the same script was unfolding that started the game having Wimberley enjoying a 9-0 run and leading, 30-23 with 4:55 remaining in this 3rd period.
CL’s defense then held the Texans to one more basket during that time span while taking control by outscoring the Visitors, 13-2 and having a 4 point lead (36-32) going into the last quarter, which would be enough, to keep the Hawk advantage to end this battle.
That 3rd quarter had Duncan with 4 assists helping in the Hawk run, that started with one assist from Rico Griffin. These assists would open the game and nail drive a Hawk eventual victory.

“It was our experience of playing four years and finding the open man and that made this a team win when it matters,” Duncan said on how those runs had a good flavor of assists for this team game. “
On the slow start, Duncan commented, “We took that experience of our last game and wanted to bring out our energy and go out and get it.”

That certainly was the case in this win with bursts of energy that finally put CL on top.
Canyon Lake would increase their lead by 5 points on trips to the Free Throw Line in that final stanza.
The Hawks had just 4 baskets during the final 8 minutes, but that was accentuated with 11 made free throws, with 9 of those coming from Parker. Then an exclamation point of two charity stripe makes, from Ben Rowe that closed the door, on the Texans with 19 seconds remaining in this must win contest.
Parker finished the game scoring 29 points while this Senior continues to climb the All-Time scoring list while he enters his last lap of games.

Parker made 11 free throws but during a critical part of the game, Canyon Lake missed 5 charity shots in a row and three of those misses coming on a front end of one and one tries.
“What is happening,” Mott said when asked about that part of this game. “I want to give credit to our crowd…It really helped us get energy.”

Mott commented on how the Hawks forged back into the lead, “We mixed up our defense and we just kept playing to flip the table.”
“It gives you confidence when the ball starts going in,” Mott finished with confidence.
Now the first round of District 28-4A games are in the books and CL stands in 3rd place with an outside chance of moving up with a good run to end the regular season.
This night had 3 district couplet games as each contest had two teams with the same record.
Unbeaten Fredericksburg and Boerne had the Billies finish on top.
Twice Beaten Canyon Lake and Wimberley had the Hawks sitting in the 3rd chair.
Winless Llano and Bandera had the Yellowjackets with their first win and a chance of taking a playoff spot with a strong finish.
CL will have two games on the road next week with their Tuesday contest in Llano and then to Fredericksburg on Friday.
