CL Gold Get Pay-Back in Hays Win, 22-6
Canyon Lake Gold’s Defense gets defensive in win over Hays, 22-6.
Canyon Lake Gold’s Team was able to even their record (2-2) after disposing of the Hays Rebels Freshman Squad at Hawk Stadium on a rare Wednesday night contest, 22-6.

The Hawk’s defense combined with their running attack took a lead early in the first half that would result in a 16 point win after this same school (Hays High School) had won an earlier game with CL being pitted against their Junior Varsity B team in the opening contest to start this season.
There has been a lot of changes since that loss four weeks ago after shuffling players between two other Hawk Squads. With that tinkering putting players in a position to play a new position that could result is mistakes on the field.
With that being said, this crew has been resilient in their effort in winning 2 of their last 3 contests with this battle resulting in their best game from both sides of the ball.
The first half had a Hawk score on their 2nd possession when Peyton McCormick would start his record setting day with a 12 yard run to start the 2nd stanza. It would be McCormick’s one of three TD as The Lake covered 64 yards on 9 plays that started with a McCormick 29 yard beginning the drive.
CL’s defense allowed just one first down in that first half after the Rebels had their first two runs starting the game covering 13 yards. That same offense was only able to garner 8 more yards to finish the half which would come to, less than 1 yard per carry.
A newbie to this team in his first game was middle linebacker Zachary Tubb who finished with double digit tackles and leaving Hays with several tattoos on their jersey’s.

“As soon as I step on the field I take on a new mind set,” Tubb said. “I was playing nose and I try to set a good example on how to play and I always like to get good reps.”
Tubb was commenting on the game while also thinking of how the team will get ready for that next opponent. Just 5 out of the Rebel’s 31 rushing plays went further than 5 yards with the longest going 10 yards late in that 2nd half.
The Hawks first score came after blocking a punt that helped shorten the field for that score.
Canyon Lake would start their 2nd Half with the ball and would promptly fumble on their first play which happened to be the same way the day started. The Hawks fumbled on their first play to start this game.
Another reason to applaud an outstanding defense was having CL clamping down on these Rebels allowing no damage.

Hays had their best play after that 2nd fumble when QB Isaac Smith found Collin Smith for a 48 yard pass and run for the tying score, 6-6.
Things would change quickly after that Rebel score, as the Hawk’s Marquis Odom took the kick-off for a 30 yard return that did had a wild finish when Odom became a rope in a tug-of-war game for 15 of those yards.
With both team’s using Odom as that rope, the Hawks, won this battle that helped CL get that momentum by moving the pile for 15 yards of real estate and setting up Canyon Lake at the Rebel’s 40 yard line.
“I was just trying to push myself and hold onto the ball,” Odom said while stretching. “I heard them yelling to each other to try and strip the ball….but I kept on trying to run and stay on my feet.”
“I’m slippery,” Odom finished with a great way of describing that return.
Then on the first play, McCormick scored the 2nd touchdown tiptoeing the last 5 yards to the goal line.
This time, CL would have Chevy Standifer convert his first of two Pat’s giving the Hawks a, 14-6 advantage.
Hays was able to control the clock for much of the 2nd half with their longest drive to start the 4th quarter that went 56 yards and had 13 plays but nothing to show for it as the Rebels ran out of downs on CL’s 19 yard line with right at 1 minute remaining.

No-one told McCormick that the game was over as this Jet Runner with speed to burn took off on an 81 yarder down the visitors sideline for a convincing TD that would put this Rebel team out of their misery.
McCormick would end the game rushing for 211 yards or right at 20 yards per tote with this Hawk victory.
“I just want to get the rock and do whatever I can to stay off the ground,” McCormick said like a player allergic to turf burns.
On what type of play he likes best between up the middle or around the end, “I like the middle because last year I had 21 TD’s and so I am more familiar with that type of run.”
On what he was thinking on that last run, “I just thinking I get to run the ball and when I broke free I just wanted to keep my breath.”
McCormick had 130 before his last run but making a statement for the team to continue a good run through a tough group of schools has been accomplished up to this point of the season.
