CL Hawks Return the Favor in, 2-0 Win over Wimberley

Canyon Lake ends a long drought with a win over Wimberley, 2-0 to split their series with a 2 hit shut-out thrown by Tyler Pauly.
“They are a playoff team and we still have a lot of games to play and this win bodes well for us as the season continues,” Head Coach Victor Escamilla stated. “We are playing good established teams in district and this was one of our best program wins to date. We will be continuing to play these type of pitchers and we needed this win…but I told the players if we would have lost that there was still plenty of time to get back in it.”

wins is now tied with Cody Breest for 2nd place chasing Tanner Schultz who has 15 wins.
“You’ve got to make pitches when it counts,” Pauly said after giving up three walks which was more than his minuscule 0.25 walks given up per game going into this outing. “This sets us up for district and we will need to come out and play and make a difference…this will give us more confidence and we like playing at home.”
This drought was over when CL was able to break the ice in scoring 2 runs in that 5th inning as the Texans had held the Lake without a run for 13 innings.
Defense and Pitching are the two main ingredients that have helped in this split with Wimberley which might be a precursor to district play with several District 28-4A schools left to play.
On defense, the Hawks moved Schultz to 3rd base for the first time for a job done flawlessly while the outfield tracked down fly balls with acrobatic skills helping keep this game in check.
“We are the last line of defense,” Centerfielder Matt McLain said in response to how well all three fielders played. “It was a, no fly zone!”
There was one play that had McLain calling for the ball while running in front of left fielder Ty Sellers who said, “I thought, you better catch it.”

Communication is important to keep teammates from running into each other while looking up for a catch, “Yeah, I might have called Ty off to soon for that catch,” McLain said.
A ball that was hit earlier in this game to right field had Jeremy Greene getting closer to the fence before that important catch. “I thought it should have been a routine hit but the wind helped as it was tough to see the ball with the sun so I was just hoping I could see it and not wanting it to drop for a hit.”
Left fielder Sellers circus catch that had a Texan on second base helping to keep those goose eggs on the scoreboard. This group is starting to jell at the right time which will help as district matures.
Canyon Lake’s pitching was on full display last season but was not able to showcase that talent with a shorten campaign. Pauly and Schultz are carryovers from that team and these current Hawks are dominating in that All-Time Earned Run Average (era) which is the one stat for pitching to hang your hat on with 4 current players in the top 5 bunched together.

Wimberley’s best chance to score a run came in the 4th inning after a lead-off walk which was erased on a fielder’s choice. That Texan stole second and an infield single put runners on the corners.

Pauly battled Wimberley’s Josh Prado after 9 pitches was finally ringing this Texan for his 6 strikeout to end that inning.
The only time CL was able to advance to third base was in that following 5th inning when James LaLonde was safe on a 3rd baseman’s wild throw to first base that had LaLonde advancing to 2nd base.
Next up was Dalton Stanley who bunted the first pitch in front of home plate that had the throw to 3rd base not being in time. That sacrifice/fielder’s choice gave The Lake players at the corners with no outs.
Pauly was able to help his cause with a double breaking the tie with CL being able to squeeze an insurance run in that same frame when Griffen Williams hit a towering infield fly ball that resulted in an Infielder’s Pitching Mound Convention who watched that hit-ball fall to the ground untouched for the second Texan error in that frame.
That plated McMullen who entered the inning as a pinch-runner for Stanley after his successful sacrifice bunt.
Wimberley did escape two innings with good defensive double plays ending any Hawk threat but all the Home Team would need were 2 runs coupled with defense and pitching.

In other District 28-4A action:
Frontrunner Boerne was able to run rule Bandera to win that series while Davenport evened their two game set with an 8-4 victory over Fredericksburg.
Those results have District 28-4A with 4 teams at 1-1 and the Greyhounds and Bulldogs book ending those teams with 2-0 and 0-2 records.
Canyon Lake will take to the road in Billie land on Tuesday before returning to the Hawk Nest next Thursday to complete that two game set.
