Canyon Lake will be in a battle this week when they take on a Lampasas team that has won their last 3 out of 4 contests against the Hawks. All three of those Badgers wins were when Ace Whitehead was leading that group.
Whitehead did everything for those Badgers as it was reported he was responsible for cleaning the uniforms.
Last year, without Whitehead, Canyon Lake was able to hold the Badgers to their least amount of points scored in this series, 17 points.
This year’s Lampasas team is averaging 35.5 points in district play and defensively are holding opponents 24 points per outing.
There are several common opponents with the only game that came out different being against Davenport. CL won that game by 3 points while Lampasas was on the short end losing by 3 touchdowns.
A Hawk win would give The Lake their 2nd undisputed district championship and a loss would have a two or three way tie based on Davenport beating Marble Falls.
With the Wolves playing a Mustangs team that is still looking for their first district win and are presently on a 6 game losing streak. So, it would not be out of line to think this game’s result would put this into a 3-way tie with that Hawk loss.
That is where seeding would come into play. If the Badgers win by one or two points then the Hawks would have a first seed based on CL’s 3 point win over Davy.
With a CL loss by 3 or more points, then the Wolves, would get that coveted 1st seed because of their win over Lampasas.
With a larger Lamp’s win, Canyon Lake would be slotted as the 3rd seed for that first post-season contest.
These Badgers have a quarterback, David Flores who has passed for 2002 yards with a 65% completion rate. Flores has thrown 25 touchdowns with 9 interceptions.
Flores will not be a statue in the pocket as he has run for 264 yards that is right at 5 yards per carry. That compares to CL’s Hunter Anderson with 261 rushing yards this season.
There are 3 receivers with Ethan Moreno who is the main target. Moreno has 64 catches for 878 yards that averages 14 yards per reception.
Two other receivers will also be a handful with Owen Stubbs with 25 receptions for 421 yards and 8 touchdowns and Aden Rascoe has 30 catches and 304 yards.
Rascoe is their leading rusher with 584 yards and 9 touchdowns and those carries average 6 yards.
Lampasas has a Freshman running back that has rushed for 273 yards and his average run is the same as Rascoe.
In the Badgers game with Marble Falls, their offense was well contained with 301 yards of total offense that had 192 rushing and 109 passing.
Canyon Lake has squelched the no points in that opening quarter as they now stand with 31 points to start a game. What has not been mentioned is a Hawk strength as games continue into those final two quarters.
For the season (8 games) Canyon Lake owns a 73-10 point advantage during the 4th quarter. When combined with a 3rd period where CLHS has scored 15 points more than opponents.
That has CL scoring 78 more points during those final 24 minutes of a game. Going one more quarter and counting the final 3 quarters has The Lake with an impressive 96 point differential.
Those numbers are the same in district games except the Hawks have also outscored their district friends 10 points to open those games.
Canyon Lake has had one downfall when adding games played back in 2009 and that comes with the 10th game has given CL their worst week which has come in that last game.
The Hawks stand with a, 5-9 record for their finale and have averaged only 22 points during these past 14 seasons. That is the worst record for those 10 game stints and only one week that CL has been worse in scoring points comes with that opening contest of each season. Canyon Lake is averaging just 15 points per outing to start each year.
This should be a barn-burner against a Badger team that has the weapons to give CLake some trouble.
Good news is seeing how Canyon Lake has handled 3 parts of their game with an offense that is averaging over 450 yards per outing and coupled with a defense that leads district and now with a special team unit that has been nails.
But that last nugget is knowing that this Senior Class has won a District Championship in each stop on their way through Middle-School to now to their Senior season.
That is something that can be realized by taking care of that last regular season game on their ledger.
Go Hawks!!
