Baseball: Hawks lose another Heartbreaker

Canyon Lake lost to Fredericksburg last Friday night at Hawk diamond, 7-6. If you go to a fight, then you would like to know that you have enough ammo for the skirmish.

Canyon Lake has been fighting an uphill battle most of the season, with several key Seniors gone from last year and a much younger team getting, in game, experience.

With only 10 players suited up for the game against Fredericksburg, the Hawks almost pulled out the win.

Canyon Lake was cruising with a 5-0 lead in the top of the sixth inning when the wheels came off the wagon.

The Hawks had already lost Kyler Huff earlier in the game when he was hit by the pitcher at the plate.

Daulton Winters had pitched a masterful game when the Billies struck for enough runs to take the 6-5 lead. Fredericksburg added an insurance run in the top of the seventh.

They would need that run as Travis Walker started the bottom of the inning hitting an opposite field homerun over the right center fence.

“My first opposite field homerun,” sophomore catcher Travis Walker said. “ I knew he would pitch me outside and so I tried to take it to the opposite field.”

“The pitch was belt high,” Walker continued. “It is a lot easier when you see the pitcher throughout the game.”

A walk to Zach Jenkins and two stolen bases later the Hawks had the tying run on third and no outs.

Youth met expectations and the next two batters would strike out and Jacob McIntosh hitting a comebacker to the pitcher to end the game with the tying run stranded on third.

“We get close,” Head Coach Trent Dunavant said. “We just can’t finish it.”

Canyon Lake finds themselves playing for pride and now a resolve to improve for their run next year.

“We are trying to get better,” Walker said with resolve. “And we will make the team better.”

The Hawks will play their last home games this week as they host Elgin on Monday and Navarro on Thursday.
