CL Hawks Win Razor Thin Game Over Somerset, 48-47

Caleb Kreiger Scored 26 points in Win over Somerset

Canyon Lake will get another crack at Randolf as these two schools will meet for the second consecutive week as foes fighting for a Tournament Championship.

The Hawks punched their ticket for this rematch when they held on for a, 48-47 victory over Somerset Bulldogs in a nightcap on the first day of the Canyon Lake Classic.

This game had 15 lead changes, as each team traded punches all night long trying to get an advantage.

Somerset’s largest lead was only two points and CL had a seven point lead in their second quarter, 18-11.

Senior Caleb Kreiger had no problem establishing the inside as he hit at a 82% rate from the field through the first half scoring 20 points.

The second half, Somerset put a couple of Bulldogs on Kreiger forcing the Hawks to get more players involved.

“I had a size advantage,” Kreiger started. “We were beating their press, but then in the second half they put more players on me and I had to find other players.”

Canyon Lake started the fourth quarter with a one point lead, when Kreiger hit his first shot stretching that lead to three, 41-38.

Somerset would answer with five straight points, seizing the lead again, 43-41.

Paul Davis took his next rebound and went coast to coast for a tying score at the five minute mark.

A couple of minutes of blank shooting by both clubs, put this game in pressure mode when the Bulldogs broke the tie with under three minutes in regulation, 45-43.

Kreiger was johnny on the spot once again when he was dished the ball from Thomas McIntire and made the shot and one to give CL the lead (46-45) twenty seconds later.

Somerset was back in business with another bucket with two minutes left, 47-46.

On CL’s next possession Coach Chapman avoided a turnover when Doug Hubnik was about to get a five second count and a timeout was called.

The Hawks missed their shot and with one minute to go, Javier Mendez forced a key turnover giving the Hawks another chance for points.

This play was pivotable, since Somerset did not need to shoot and CL only other way of getting the ball would be by fouling.

“I was trying to deny the ball,” Mendez said. “I was surprised when they turned it over.”

Canyon Lake would get two open three point attempts on their next possession and on the second try, a Bulldog fouled Andrew Riali from the corner giving the Hawks three chances to tie or take the lead.

Riali, made two to give your Hawks that final margin.

Somerset, had chances as time was running out, but Isaac Pruna was relentless underneath snagging another key rebound sealing this see/saw game.

“I get excited and just want to get the jump and beat everybody out there,” Pruna said. “I have played basketball since I was little and I have trained myself after football to be aggressive around the basket.”

Pruna certainly has those skills as you might know that a linebacker could be foul prone, but this young man certainly can control his body underneath.

It is hard for this Reporter to think about Pruna being a little kid. Glad he played big tonight.

Canyon Lake will now play Saturday at Noon against Randolf for another chance to win a tournament, hopefully, two times will be the charm.
