Layups are not a Slam Dunk as Hawks lose, 45-40 to Navarro
Lay ups can be one of the most mystifying shots in the heat of battle for basketball games.
Many times shots go in and out or just bounce the wrong way and when you add up those shots then you know that a game was well within your reach to come away with a victory, IF….if we only had those shots go in…
“We talked about turnovers during halftime,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman started. “When a team is not even pressing and you have 11 turnovers in a half….turnovers just diminish your chances of scoring.”
“Our turnovers were also timely ones,” Lucas also stated. “We have to come out and play with energy and tenacity and we just did not get that done.”
Canyon Lake was still right on that door step of taking a game against Navarro, but a missed lay-up here and an untimely turnover there will add up many times in giving way too many gifts to your opponent netting a loss.
The Hawks rebounded from a 13 point deficit to close to within two points late in the fourth but just could not find a way to get that shot in a loss to the Panthers, 45-40.
Canyon Lake has not had a warm reception at home with another loss and a 3-10 record.
That last home win was during the Canyon Lake Tournament a 48-47 win over Somerset, December 7th, 49 days and seven games ago.
Speaking of streaks, CL went over a quarter of playing time without scoring a point. The Hawks took a 12-10 lead and when they scored again with 1:05 left in the second quarter, Navarro enjoyed 14 unanswered points.
Without Spencer Wellings two buckets the quarter would of been a shut-out.
In the first quarter your Hawks had their largest lead, 10-5 but an 8-2 run to finish that quarter would be the Hawks last lead in this contest.
Andrew Riali and Paul Davis swooshed their first three long bombs of the game but Canyon Lake could not sustain that intensity and soon fell off their ladder.
Navarro was coming off a win over Bandera and carried that confidence builder throughout this contest in holding off the Hawks.
Coach Chapman went into an offense/defense substitution game early in that fourth quarter and almost pulled off a great comeback.
Canyon Lake found themselves down 40-29 with 4:26 left in the final stanza but started to chip away at that lead.
Kreiger had a three pointer closing to within eight points, Riali converted two of three free throws closing the gap to six points with 2:45 left and still plenty of time.
Forty seconds later and two more free throws for Riali closed to within four points for a tie.
Doug Hubnik matched two free throws by Navarro to get to that four point deficit and 1:10 remaining in the game.
Canyon Lake then played lock down defense when Kreiger swatted a ball off the backboard and Hubnik corralled the ball and passed off to Javier Mendez dashing down the sideline for a coast to coast lay-up and a 40-42 score with just under a minute left in the game.
That lay-up was their first in this game which was significant based on missing five of those shots up to that point in this game.
Navarro finished with three points from the charity stripe as the Hawks ran out of gas to end the game and coming up short.
Riali was the Hawks only player to get into double figure scoring and Hubnik finished with five assists.
“Navarro did a good job of taking us out of our game,” Coach Chapman closed.
The Hawks will have one more ‘Home’ game this Friday when Fredericksburg comes to town, let’s get some home cooking and turn the tables on the Billies.
