Hawks Are Reborn in Loss to Somerset, 47-35
Canyon Lake had an opposite word game. What happened last week was just the opposite in this game with Somerset.
There is an old adage that a team will improve the most between the first and second game and the Hawks had already scored more points than the Blanco game on their first drive.
“We had a good offensive line tonight,” Head Coach Charles Drum started. “Our offense was totally different than the way we played last week. I’m proud of our offensive line.”
McGuire Johnson was the workhorse on this night as he rumbled for two touchdowns in the first half and helped Canyon Lake regain a lead going into a delay of game stoppage as thunderstorms and lightning threatened the area.
Canyon Lake did have some negatives to start this game as they accumulated 40 yards of penalties which last week would of killed all scoring chances, but tonight CL had a different resolve and a different result with intensity.
The Hawks finished the game with 110 yards from the Refs and that was a hard hurdle to clear as those penalties took away positive yards and took away good defensive plays with those 11 flags.
In fact, Somerset was helped by penalties in stopping the Hawks while Canyon Lake was hurt defensively in trying to stop the Bulldogs as they were awarded five first downs by penalties.
A 14 point swing happened on Canyon Lakes only turnover in the game.
The Hawks had driven to the Bulldog 8 yard line and had a chance to tie the score on this drive, but a muffed snap off the hands of Skyler Tschoepe and a Dog picked up the ball and 92 yards later a score that increased a lead to 14 instead of having a game that had a chance of being even steven.
Somerset had a very prolific offense and Canyon Lake was finding it hard to stop this Bulldog team.
Somerset’s QB Koy Detmer Jr. was held to only 173 yards after passing for 377 yards against SA Lanier last week.
“That was what we were wanting to do in limiting Detmer tonight,” Coach Drum drummed up.”
Somerset’s running game however was potent in this game as these big Dogs could run and they had more than six yards per carry and that kept drives going while the Hawks could not get those needed third down stops.
Canyon Lake was a different team than what was seen in last week’s game with Blanco.
McGuire Johnson had 199 yards by himself as this bruising runner was having his way in this game while scoring four times.
Those three scores totaled 112 yards which would be considered a good day for any running back.
This game was a sample of that offense that performed two years ago when Zach Henshaw was having his way with opponents.
“I get the ball and I run,” Running Back Johnson said obviously. “If it wasn’t for Drake Phillips and the offensive line then I would not have reached that number of yards.”
“We came together as a team and had the drive,” Johnson continued. “We still have a few kinks to work out on defense.”
Canyon Lake’s Josh DeVries (92 yards) and Hayden Dubois (71 yards) were making these Dogs lose their sense of smell. (hitting those dogs in the face) The 199 yards from Johnson, 92 yards from DeVries, and 72 yards from the feet of Dubois tied the most yards running by three backs in the same game in Hawks history.

Offensive Lineman Phillips gave his rendition of the connection with Johnson’s running plays, “It was all a certain play we both do and something just clicks when that play is called….I just tell McGuire that I’m going to block for you and you get the TD.”

Canyon Lake was reeling after a loss last week and finding a rhythm with their offense and now one week later this team knows that they have some good games upcoming if they can keep improving and start taking advantage of opposing teams.

Now Canyon Lake will prepare for La Vernia on the road this next Friday.
“La Vernia will be tough,” Coach Drum surmised. “The game tonight was like a playoff game, Somerset has a very good offense but we can’t sit back and the kids have to be ready for a battle.”
