Present Beats Past in Alumni Hawk Volleyball Game
Present Beats Past in Canyon Lake Volleyball, 2-1 as the Alumni rallied
from a 18-8 deficit to make it an interesting finish to lose 25-23 final score.
The Past had some height and this Present team had to do some digs to keep the game out of reach for those Past players.
Present team one the first match with a little resistance, but as that second game got going, the Past hit their stride and won in overtime, 26-24.
Coach Kim Paisley will be fielding her second team at Canyon Lake and one thing should be apparent, this team will be one year older.
There were not many Seniors on last year’s squad and with a freshman playing and a few sophomores, CL could not count on having experience to help answer some shortcomings in last year’s season.
“They have come a long way,” Head Coach Paisley said when asked about how the younger players had progressed since the end of last season. “This group has always been competitive and they have kind of grown into themselves. During the off-season I started seeing it.”
Canyon Lake is starting to fill in all of the teams with more players that will give some needed growth as this club grows up.
“I expect the Junior Varsity and Sub Varsity to be very competitive this time,” Coach Paisley assessed.
A seasoned sophomore will be a good ingredient for a team looking to forge their way back into the playoffs after a four year hiatus.
“Regan Mickey has worked so hard since the volleyball season ended and she has grown tremendously as a setter…she is running the show and has also become more vocal in telling hitters where they need to be going. Her leadership skills have blossomed.”
Mickey position would be the quarterback for a football team and so honing in on those skills will hopefully give CL that variable to help solve the playoff drought.
“Having that will alleviate confusion and that helps the team with more confidence,” Coach
Paisley stated. “Consistency will establish expectations and that should help take away doubt.”
Another player that excelled on last year’s team was Hayley Melone as she finished with All-District honors helping to keep rallies going with her digs.
“Hayley will be more vocal, she was our team MVP for a reason,” Paisley praised. “She will dig it.”
Team wise, Canyon Lake will still be young but now this team will resemble that second year of competition back in the day when those 2009 team came into their own while moving into their first playoff game just in the second year of playing.
“There is more passion and more want to this year and we will need to get in that mentality before district starts.
Other players that you might see stepping up, “Lillie Sander has improved on her blocking skills and she is just all over the net.”
“Our tryouts were very competitive and they have adjusted quickly to my style,” the stylish Paisley said.
Canyon Lake will be starting their season with a home game next Tuesday when Liberty Hill and Schertz Clemens comes to the Hawk gym.
How will the Hawks do in starting this second year under Coach Paisley?
“My coaching style will not change and I’m excited for the new district,” Paisley closed. “I came from Smithville, so I know what to expect and I feel we have only gotten better.”
Canyon Lake will start a new campaign with youth and confidence which will only help when the stands fill up with Hawk fans.
Come out next week to get this new year going.
