Canyon Lake won a big game in Cuero when Freshman Alexa Ramos went to the bank with her free throw giving the Hawks a one point victory,

“We played a full four quarters,” Head Coach Mary Beth Gallagher said. “This was a huge team effort.”

This game was close the whole way as the biggest lead was six points for Cuero.

“They (Cuero) had two good runs and Kyndall Drum came through both times and stopped the bleeding scoring both times,” Coach Gallagher praised.

Foul trouble was the culprit in the Hawks last game with Navarro, but on this night Canyon Lake kept all the players in the game, competing throughout the contest.

The Hawk two Freshman players took center stage in the closing moments as Reagan Heun tied the game with her shot and Ramos ended the game making her free throw with less than a second left on the clock.

That series was set up with a great defensive effort by CL when Ramos dribbled to her goal and was fouled going to hole.

There is a play ground saying that a bank shot only counts when you call it, and Ramos took care of her shot from the charity stripe going to the bank for a one point deposit.

“Yes sir, I was thinking about shooting the shot off the bank,” Ramos said. “All I had to do is make one shot and all I did was focus on the front of the rim.”

So, composure of calling a bank shot made this game a thing of beauty as Canyon Lake improved to a 3-1 district record and sole position of second place as the first round of games comes to an end next week.

Senior Drum was all smiles after this game as she continues to get stronger after starting late for her last year on the hardwood.

“I knew I had to get mentally smart and do my part,” Drum said after commenting on her play in stopping the Gobblers two runs.

Now the Hawks will have a chance to cement a playoff spot in their game with Wimberley next Tuesday in the Hawk Gym.

“We are still building and we can go all the way,” Drum beat. “We have a chance build on this win and get mentally tough for the rest of our games.”

“This will be a very tough game,” Ramos said while commenting on the next game with the Texans. “The team that wants it more will win and with our energy and heart we can pull it off.”

“This game brought us together a little more and it proves that freshman can help this team,” Ramos said like a Senior.

Canyon Lake has not been in this rarefied air for a while and the girls will need your support in the Hawk Nest this coming Tuesday against the Texans.

Lady Hawks Lose to Front Runner Navarro, 50-31

Wednesday, January 7th, 2015

Canyon Lake won the second half but lost the game with District 26-4A frontrunner Navarro last Tuesday at the Hawk Gym, 50-31.

A 21-2 whitewashing in the second quarter was all this Panther team would need as Canyon Lake lost three starters to fouls in that quarter and just did not have enough woman power to keep up with this very talented team.

Shooting foul shots was something that Navarro got used to as they scored 12 of their 50 points from the stripe.

Luckily for Canyon Lake, this part of Navarro’s game was not that lethal. The Panthers shot 36% from the line as they missed 21 shots that kept this game within reach.

Canyon Lake’s first quarter was an eye opener and not having a good second quarter was a epic fail in giving Navarro a big enough lead to rest their starters and get everyone a chance for some playtime.

Gerrit Wilkins and Sam Langford were also instrumental in this victory as they dished off some assists while also getting some hustle plays as Navarro was making their move in that second half.

Canyon Lake was being pressed and had lost some of their momentum when Wilkins dove for a ball and while fighting for possession was fouled and two free throws resulted in a shot of offense as the Hawks would finish with a flurry closing out this Panther club.

CL Hawks Lose Heartbreaker to Navarro, 55-54

Tuesday, January 6th, 2015

Canyon Lake was tied or had the lead for 30:29 in their game with Navarro but could not hold onto the lead as the Panthers scored a three-point shot with 7 seconds on the clock to take a heart breaker from the home team.

The Hawks went into the final stanza enjoying an 11 point advantage but Navarro’s 26 point fourth quarter was just enough to steal a win on Tuesday night at Canyon Lake.

“We did a lot of good things that got us the lead,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman started. “We played good defense and got the ball inside, but we just got tight and timid in the fourth quarter.”

There were several good things happened in this game as CL finished with three players in double figures and many of the other players hustling and finding ways to stay in the lead.

“This was a good win for us,” Head Coach Mary Beth Gallagher started. “We know we have to beat the teams that we should beat if we are going to make the playoffs.”

The Lady Hawks reached 50 points in this contest as each quarter Canyon Lake reached double digit scoring.

“I feel this game will help our confidence in district play,” Coach Gallagher continued. “I felt like Kyndall (Drum) did a fantastic job on defense covering number 23 who is usually their leading scorer and Kyndall held her to just 4 points….Our post play has started to come together with Kyndall’s leadership and Sarah (Schneider) is feeling better and is back helping with our defense as well.”

Defense certainly helped in this contest as the bigs controlled under the basket as Mia Riali also had her way from away the basket with six steals.

“We started playing to our game plan and started locking in defensively,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman said.

Canyon Lake was also successful when using the two big guys (Sean Nolan and Tyler Williams) as both players finished with six blocks and 19 points.

“We were trying to get the ball inside,” Coach Chapman said with his height. “That gave us some easy lay ups and Tyler (Williams) is long and athletic.”

The Hawks shot 50% from the floor in the first quarter but still found themselves down three points after the buzzer sounded ending the first stanza.

Then after holding the Apaches to three points in the second quarter, the Hawks got the momentum and never looked back winning the next three quarters for a 16 point win.

Freshman Reagan Heun was deadly from beyond the arc as she finished the night with 21 points and scored 9 of the 11 points in the last quarter.

“I had my rhythm in this game and then the bench got into it and I was just ready to do my thing,” Heun said. “This win means so much because we are so young and it will get us on our way up.”

Canyon Lake was down 10 turnovers from their average so far this season, which certainly helped CL take advantage of getting more shots off.

The Hawks had a height advantage and used that part of their game defensively in keeping Pleasanton Eagles under 10 points per quarter.

Brownlee sunk his first shot from beyond the arc which was enough to match Pleasanton’s points in that same first quarter.

The Eagles’ first points came at the 4 minute mark and then were held without a point for another five minutes.

Tyler Williams used his inside game to garner 10 points and seven rebounds helping CL to keep their pressure throughout the game.

Ramirez was also active with six offensive rebounds and five steals. Ramirez also led the team with three assists.

“I like to pass the ball,” Ramirez said eloquently. “We can all assist.”

“We got into what we are suppose to do and we have been working on that more in practice,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman said. “No turnovers and that allowed us to work do more stuff.”

For most of this year, CL has had problems scoring in the second and third quarters. With each game a good first stanza in scoring would be followed by a second or third quarter of less than 10 points.

On this night, Canyon Lake solved those two quarters and finished in a flurry scoring 40 points combined for those quarters culminating in an 18 point victory.

Junior Brandon Ward started the game with his first points off an assist from Sophomore Rory Preiss.

Both players finished with double digit scoring while seniors Sean Nolan and Garrett Winters also joining the double digit party with 10 and 14 points respectfully.

Navarro, Fulton, and Boyd team up for an 8 point win over Pleasanton

“We started strong and had a good first two quarters,” Head Freshman Coach Javier Almanza said. “We let our guard down in the third but finished in the fourth quarter.”

The Hawks had Boyd finishing with 21 points and Cole was next with 8 points in a game that showed a lot of needed energy as this semester draws to a close.

“Our third quarter was a combination of bad defense and turnovers,” Coach Almanza stated. “We let them back into the game and I had to throw in guys who could handle the pressure and Navarro and Fulton did that.”

Ben Fulton did not show numbers in scoring, but his game shows how a player can influence a game in other ways.

“Hustle plays and taking care of the ball with good defense and grabbing rebounds,” Coach Almanza closed.
