Canyon Lake had an electric game when Kelsey Ahrens hit a 3-run walk off home run in the bottom of the 7th inning, helping CL stay alive for a playoff spot beating unbeaten Bandera, 8-7 on

Tuesday night at Hawk Field.

“No. 1, you never give up or quit believing that we could win,” Head Coach John Gallagher said. “This will motivate you to have inspired practices this week to help ride this into our Wimberley game.”

Coach Gallagher continued, “For all the errors and mental mistakes we had, we battled to take it to them.”

Into the night, was what the crowd saw with amazement as this home run was by far the longest hit ball in Hawk history.

Hawks Lost Tough Game, 8-5 to the Billies

Saturday, April 5th, 2014

Canyon Lake only had one inning that was not good, but that is all it took for

Fredericksburg to take control of the final in a disappointing loss, 8-5 last Friday.

The Hawks was in control with a 4 run lead going into the fifth inning and that was when the proverbial dam broke and the Billies responded with 7 of their 11 hits in the game pulling a way with a 7-4 lead.

Of those 7 hits, 4 were doubles and Canyon Lake would not be able to rally for a win for this early start, where the Varsity was playing before the usual JV game.

CL had been shut out a day earlier and right off the bat (pardon the pun), Carly DuBois had a first pitch single that bounced over the pitchers head into centerfield.

Hawks Clobber Bandera, 16-3

Friday, April 4th, 2014

The date was April 23, 2010 when Canyon Lake last had a game stopped in district play based

on the mercy rule which goes into effect if a team has a 10 run lead or more by the 5th inning.

Ingram Moore was in town and left early after CL finished the game, 12-2 behind the pitching of Cody Breest after an 11 strikeout evening.

This year’s edition had mercy on the Bulldogs after the 5th inning and a 16-3 win.

Daulton Winters (from 2010 game) had two runs on one hit and a walk….wait….wait…cousin, Garrett Winters was back at the lead off position in the line-up and had two hits and three runs.

Almost four years later, as CL would also unleash one of their top offensive games in their history to boot.

A five run and eight run first two innings was all it took when Nick Cahill swatted a ball over the left field fence for a grand slam in that first inning spelling doom or what would soon become a mercy game.

The Hawks have had their share more downs than ups this district season, but things fell into place when this CL team sprinted out for a 5-0 lead and finished off the Greyhounds.

“Kids worked hard all week in practice and we struck early and that was the key in this game,” Head Coach John Gallagher stated. “This will give us some confidence offensively.”

Another home run for Alexis Robinson in that first inning to start the fireworks.

“I was just trying to make contact,” Robinson said.

That contact gave the Hawks the shot in the arm needed in getting out of their doldrums.

Four different players had two hits in this hit parade as the bottom of the order collected four of those 10 hits.

Lizzy Henderson and Tiare Kacir kept innings going with their offense and Henderson seems to be settled in as the everyday first baseman now for Canyon Lake.

Hawks Avenge Earlier Loss to Billies, 8-5

Hawks win their fourth district game in avenging an earlier loss to Fredericksburg on Tuesday night, 8-5.

Pitcher Nick Kissel had a complete game three hitter in this win as the Hawk Pitchers kept their District 27-3A era at 1.99 per game.

Kissel had some aggression working in this game as he had a career high five hit batters which helped the Billies keep innings alive and able to score five runs with only three hits.

Fredericksburg has just one win this year in district and CL was the recipient of that victory for the Billies, but in this game Canyon Lake got in gear in the 4th inning scoring 4 runs and riding that 3 run lead to the end of this game.

The Hawks scored two runs in the first inning while keeping their sixth district foe without a run in that same inning.

CL Hawks continue to struggle offensively in the first few innings and Wimberley takes advantage in their 10-6 win on Tuesday night at the Hawk Diamond.

The Texans jutted out to a 4-0 lead in the fourth inning before CL could answer and that was the template for the rest of the evening. As Wimberley had Canyon Lake playing catch-up for the rest of the game.

“We are not starting like we were earlier this year on offense,” Head Coach John Gallagher said. “We are just not starting when we should.”

Kelsey Ahrens and Alexis Robinson both finished the game with two hits leading CL’s offense.

It was the third win for the Hawks over Wimberley and improved their District 27-3A record to 5-1.

Both games had the Texans drawing first blood in the first inning with a run, but soon the Hawks would respond with vengeance, scoring at will.

Wimberley jumped out to a 5-3 lead in that first game when they bottled up all their hits and walks in that one inning to score 4 runs.

CL also chipped in with a couple of errors for some gift wrapped runs for the Visitors.

“We finally loosened up,” Head JV Coach Brian Owens opened. “We put pressure on their (Wimberley’s) defense and then we kicked it up with our offense.”

getting athletes in shape as the Hawk Relays commences this Thursday and District 27-3A Meet in a couple of weeks.

There have been some personal bests this season and Shane Relkin had that moment last week in the long jump hitting a distance of 20’5.25 feet.

Breaking the 20 foot mark is a goal for athletes in having a chance to score some points for the team.

“It was last jump,” Junior Relkin said. “It felt like a solid jump and the coaches said to go up six inches on my step…I had a solid jump and I just flew and then had a good landing. It was exciting to getting one of the goals that I had set.”

Friday.

“I am very proud of the team and our accomplishments,” Head Coach Erich Robinson started. “I think this might be a school record, if not a record for myself and Coach Paisley, as far as first year Varsity Girls’ Soccer Coaches.”

The Hawks finished the sweep when they made a Christy Fowler first half goal stand with a great defensive effort with Tiffany Laurent kept all attempts at goal a losing proposition.

“Wow, it was a ‘nail bitter’, Coach Robinson said. “I was really proud of my girls, they did not back down or give up.”

Canyon Lake’s goal in the first half stood up as being good enough in this contest.

“It was a tough first half, sunny and against the wind,” Coach Robinson continued. “I had hoped to score more in the second half, but we held them to accomplish our goal-a victory.”

This win will allow the Hawks to line up against Boerne Champion for Bi-District this week after finishing in 3rd Place in District.

Champion finished in 2nd in their district setting up this first round of action.

“I think we have a big challenge against Boerne Champion,” Robinson said succinctly. “I also believe that we can accomplish what we put our minds to…..We only have one day to practice and I want to bring them (Champion) a game and not just play defense.”

The Hawks have a well balanced team this year with almost the same amount players for each of the classes.
