Hawks Finish Tourney on an Upbeat, Beat Jourdanton, 3-0

Canyon Lake showed signs of life after blanking Jourdanton in their last tournament game in Somerset, 3-0.

“We played two games real well,” Head Coach Trent Dunavant surmised. “In our loss to Somerset our pitching did not have a walk and everything they (Somerset) got they earned.”

CL had a stellar performance from the mound in the second game that has given that glimmer of hope that this season has a chance of pulling out better than their record indicates.

“Our team is not set up for having success in a tournament format,” Coach Dunavant said. “You play a lot of games in a few days and we do not have the depth on defense or on the mound….if we bring in a player in the field to pitch then we just had one of our best fielders switched and having a different player in that vacated spot will cause mistakes because of not being used to that position.”

Canyon Lake’s Boys Soccer look to finish strong after beating Bandera, 2-0 on Friday night.

The Hawks will now take a week off and welcome Fredericksburg to the Hawk Nest this coming Friday for a chance to reverse an earlier one goal loss to the Billies.

CL has not been in this stratosphere ever and now will see what weightlessness might feel like with a win over the Billies.

Take in a 14-5-2 overall record and now with a very respectable 3-2-2 district number going into this last game.

Grayson Rohrbacher was on his game again, scoring 2 goals while the Hawks defense only allowed two shots on goal with Brayden Damico taking care of those shots for the shut out.

CL Hawks Run-a-way with Bandera Relays as Junior Varsity & Varsity Take First

Saturday, March 11th, 2017

Junior Lester Boehm scores 19 points with a 1st in 200 meter dash

Canyon Lake ran away with the Bandera Bulldog Relays last Wednesday as the Hawk Junior Varsity and Varsity held off Medina Valley for the sweep.

The McDonough brothers (Heath & Caimen) finished ahead of 4 of the varsity schools with a combined 46 points coming from that household.

Lester Boehm and Heath McDonough both finished first in an event as Boehm finished ahead in the 200 meter dash and McDonough had the best high jump with a 6’2 height.

CL’s 4×400 relay team of Colton McDonald, Chance Martelli, Heath McDonough, and Boehm won with a time of 3:31.51 as Canyon Lake continues to whittle down their times as the season rounds the 150 yard marker spot for this season.

Canyon Lake had another meet with two of their compadre’s in District 28-4A as Bandera and Hondo finished behind the Hawks for the second week in a row.

The Hawks scored 35 points in the dash events as they continued to show strength in the the 200 and 400 dashes.

CL Lady Hawks Take 1st (JV) & 3rd (Varsity) at Bandera Meet

Friday, March 10th, 2017

Kaitlyn Yuill one of many underclassmen scoring points for Hawk Lady Track

Canyon Lake Lady Track & Field enjoyed their best day at the cinders with a 1st Place for the Junior Varsity and a 4th Place finish for the Varsity.

Skylar Hurst scored 30 points as she rewrote the 400 yard dash event braking the 60 second barrier with a time of 56.30 becoming the first Hawk to knock down that barrier.

Sophomore Aubrey Schulze had a personal best on that same race finishing with a 63.27 mark as she finished the Bandera Meet in double figures with 11 points.

Freshman Kaitlyn Yuill enjoyed her day when she lowered her mile time to 5:51.57 as she continues to improve with each week in those distance runs.

Another freshman, Madison Churbe has been making her marks as this young lady came in scoring 20 points.

Lainee Moses had a good meet scoring 18 points while Junior Alysha Perez was next with 16 smackeroos.

The Lady Hawks have 3 losses now and two of those set-backs have come from the bats of  Wimberley, after the Texans ran out for 7 runs in the first 4 innings to coast for this win.

Canyon Lake was their own worst enemy as that first inning had two Hawk errors which led to those runs.

“We came out relaxed and focused, but we lost it early,” Head Coach John Gallagher said. “We are still in our learning steps and seeing how this team reacts in big games is what we are looking for.”

Canyon Lake put Wimberley out of their misery after a 5-1 drubbing at the Hawk Nest on Tuesday night.

The Hawk’s Boys Soccer were the last team sport to make the playoffs and that feat was realized last year.

This season, Canyon Lake will once again be ordering T-Shirts as they clinched a playoff spot with this win while also eliminating the Texans from that same achievement.

“It is always good to have your playoff spot clinched so early in district,” Head Coach Warren Graham said. “We have our spot lock-in and knocked them (Wimberley) out again.”

Boys Sub-Varsity Track have 4th Place Finish. Girls Finish 6th in Wicker Relays

Sunday, March 5th, 2017

Trenton Lorett finished high pt in Carlin Wicker Relays

Canyon Lake Sub-Varsity held their own in the Carlin Wicker Relays as the JV Boys finished 4th while the Hawk Ladies had a 6th place finish.

There were a few First Place finishers on a damp rainy day as Greyson Lee finished first in the 100 meter dash, Trenton Lorett was first in the 200 meter dash, and Nic Rivera scored 10 points for CL in the 110 meter hurdles.

On the Lady side, Alyssa Shipman finished first in the 100 meter hurdles.

Canyon Lake continues to have athletes that have performed well in those hurdle events and the pipeline looks like it will continue for a few more years.

Elena Vargas finished 2nd in the long jump for the next highest place in the events for the ladies.

Vargas and Strickland were the only Lady Hawks to finish in double figures with each having 10 points.

Hawks Return with Wet Ribbons after the Carlin Wicker Relays

Sunday, March 5th, 2017

Skylar Hurst finished high point (21) at Billies Meet

The Canyon Lake Hawks had their first run-in with the Carlin Wicker Relays. This meet has 51 years of history and on this rainy day, Kerrville Tivy won both the Boys and Girls Varsity titles.

Fredericksburg was a close 2nd place with their Boys and Girls teams as the Billies continue to churn out athletes each year and supply a multitude of depth in every event. That one aspect will garner a stampede of points.

Canyon Lake could not match that onslaught of runners and throwers and the result was a decent 4th (Boys) and 5th (Girls) place finish.
Skylar Hurst was high point for the ladies once again as she finished first in the triple jump and scored well in the 400 meter dash and helped in the mile relay.

Canyon Lake also saw their first of what will be many meets for Freshman Madison Churbe. This speedster scored 10 points and was the only other Lady Hawk in double figures.

Canyon Lake breaks the drought after opening with a 5 run lead and holding on against Seguin on a cool Friday night contest, with the Hawks winning, 8-6.

Seguin started this game like many CL contests as they had just one out with the bases loaded. Drew Tyra executed a perfect pitch on a squeeze play that resulted in a pop-up and a nice easy underhanded throw to 3rd for the double play.

Defense is always one of those keys on securing a win and that play would end up being one a turning point in getting some rain clouds for this Hawk drought.
