Panthers last Thursday night at the Blanco stadium.

The game mirrored much of the same kinks that the ReSporter had encountered.

The schedule stated a start time of 7pm and yet by the time the ReSporter’s car drove up to the parking lot, the game was deep into the second quarter of the game.

The Hawks also made some great strides on second half drives only to see a missed handoff here, a snap miss the hands of the quarterback there, and the blade of grass catching the receiver for a take down before a catch that would of been to the house.

You get the idea. The first game many times have little mistakes that can snuff out the momentum and next thing you know the offense is in punt formation.

The score was 14-8 starting the second half and from what the ReSporter could deduce the scores were a 19 yard pass play from Connor Ricker to Isaiah Gutierrez and a four yard run to paydirt by Dominic Theisz.

The half started with an eight play drive for the Hawks that had more bad than good in the results.

The good? First play pass to Gutierrez for 13 yards. Solid pass play to Lee Power for nine yards and a couple of short but solid runs from Karl Weidner.

The bad? Five yard penalty on a second and four play. A missed snap for a 14 yard loss and a couple of plays with no yardage.

It was a hit and miss second half. The offense lost possession on third down at the Panther 13 yard line, when Weidner and Ricker had a bad exchange.

Another drive was snuffed with a 14 yard loss on another bad snap.

The hit was a picture perfect pass to Gutierrez for his second touchdown as he outran Blanco defensive back 62 yards for the seal the deal score.

The team did not know Isaiah Gutierrez was going to be available until he showed up Monday for school.

“I like the team I’m playing with,” Gutierrez said. “I have a good quarterback and I knew many of the plays from last year, there were a couple of new ones.”

Mark that one up for Head Coach Trent Dunavant for keeping it simple. It paid off for two plays that proved to be the difference in the game.

The defense had some break downs too, but the pressure that was put on the quarterback by Theisz and interceptions by the backs, kept the Panthers in their cage for the remainder of the game.

“I love hitting him (quarterback),” Linebacker Theisz said. “I didn’t play much last year and so I worked hard this off season and we will have a very good season.”

The defense had two interceptions from Michael Sheffield and Carlos Ybarra each  in the half. The last interception put the sheets on the Panthers for the night.

Now the first game is out of the way and the players as well as the ReSporter will have the chance of keeping the mistakes to a minimum.
