Track & Field Hawks will be off for Region Meet this Week
Canyon Lake will have 7 athletes taking a van to Kingsville next week after competition in their Area Meet last week in Hawkville.
Sophomore Bailey Drum will represent the ladies after a personal best triple jump of 36-02 and winning this event.
Bailey Drum keeps that great Triple Jump tradition going for the Hawks
From Head Girls Coach John Barthels, “Bailey was tied for 4th place going into the Area Meet with a jump of 34-07. The young lady she was tied with jumped 35-00 on her first attempt putting pressure on Bailey early. Then Bailey jumped her season and career best of 34-09.00 before being re-arranged for the finals.
She had one jump that I told her would have been 36-00 if she had not scratched by half a foot. She was still in 5th place going into her final jump, where she needed to have a 35+ attempt. Then she perfectly hit the board and exploded to a 36-02.00 jump, giving her 1st place over everyone.”
“I had been inconsistent the whole year,” Drum started. “I just got on the board perfect and when I landed I looked back and I thought I had jumped another 34 (feet)…I felt I could compete with the best and I think I can do it and this triple jump gave me confidence.”
Competition is set below based on who will be attending from around the Region, at this writing, Area 31-32 is competing on Saturday and so those distances would be updated early next week. The athletes below in those districts was how they finished in their district track meet.

There are some good jumps mentioned above, but as Miss Drum might tell you, anything can happen.
Drum should know after besting her previous best in the Area Meet by 1 foot and 6.5 inches.
Last year at this time, Drum had a season best jump of 32-06.00 at last year’s JV District Meet. That is a good four feet better after a one year time period.
Now, Drum has served notice she might be around a couple more years as she will play every sport that is offered every time the first school bell rings. (Volleyball-Basketball-Track & Field)
Ok, Drum is a Sophomore and now we want to highlight a Freshman in Heath McDonough who will also be at the Region Meet competing in the High Jump.
Freshman Heath McDonough is climbing new heights
“Heath has had a great track season,” Head Boys Track Coach Troy Moses said. “He competed JV all season because I wanted him to develop into a track athlete and not just a High Jumper. Heath is going to be someone to watch in the future. He learned how to hurdle this year an fit was a slow process but he really came on towards the end of the year. He could of jumped on Varsity all year but he would not have the experience of running the hurdles and the 4×4 relay. The Area Meet was his best meet of the year, he did exactly what he needed to do. We knew that if he could clear 5-10 with no misses, then he would be in good shape. As a Coach, it is good to see a young Freshman compete like that.”
“It was really windy,” McDonough cleared his first sentence. “I cleared every height until the bar was raised to 6 foot and I thought I had that height until I clipped the bar with my ankles.”
McDonough has some high goals (pardon the pun) in wanting to eventually reach recent graduate Jordan Anderson’s 6-06.00 mark.
How about another Freshman who had been coming through the ranks as a decent hurdler, Brandon Courtney, will also be going to Kingsville in the 4×400 Relay.
“Brandon is a true competitor,” Coach Moses stated. “In the first two track meets, Brandon, ran on the JV and was winning, but not running great times, but he showed that he was one of our top four runners for the 4×4 relay. So we moved him to Varsity, so he could run the relay and that is when he

came out of his ‘shell’. He competed extremely well in both the 110 HH and the 300 HH. Brandon is a young man that does not like to lose. He has set the school record in both hurdle races this year, as a Freshman!! We are going to have a lot of fun watching this young man the next three years.”
The ReSporter caught up with Brandon after the Meet (out of breath), when did you know you would be this good in track?
“It started last year,” Courtney said. “I started getting taller and stronger. This year, I have been trying harder and taking in more information on how to run.”
On what he did before the Area Meet, since he was involved competing in three separate events.
“The Coaches told me to do some light work outs and I just tried to stay off my feet,” Courtney tip toed. “Whatever happens, happens and I am going to try to go as far as I can.”
Courtney’s last statement was in regards to what are his hopes as he enters the Region Meet.
Senior Christian Dittman has set the standard for future Pole Vaulters at CL these past two years have been a sight to behold.
This year, Dittman has been involved with several events and now will be able to concentrate on his first love.
That will hopefully propel him to greater heights as he zeros in his last attempt.
“Chris has been one of the top vaulters in the Region all year,” Coach Moses parted. “He has a real shot at qualifying for the State Meet. If he can get over 14-06, then he will be in the running.”
That 14-06 mark has been met earlier this year and with this young man’s resolve that could be reachable again this week-end.
Canyon Lake will be involved in the 4×400 Meter Relay after being left out last season.
“This group has done a great job this season competing,” Coach Moses passed the baton. “We have finished in the top 3 at every track meet we have gone to this year. Our first meet we ran a 3:38 and we have cut that to 3:30. Our goal has been all year to make regionals and make the finals. Canyon Lake has never had a boy’s relay make the finals at the Regional Track Meet, so that is what we will be working towards this week.”
Bradford Door Works, hopes Canyon Lake Track & Field Athletes do well at Region Meet
This might also be Junior Shane Relkin’s last event as a Hawk, as Seniors Isaac and Javier Mendez will certainly be saying good-bye after this track year by crossing a stage and getting a sheet of paper saying they have college days coming.
Those three athletes have been very instrumental at Canyon Lake and the Mendez boys have not had many days where they were not in competition or practicing for a game or meet.
It is a tough job to go from August to May and competing in sports on every turn.
