Canyon Lake would nothing more than to play two Slot-T games in a row.
That would only be doable with a win this Friday against Rockport-Fulton Pirates as a win would have the possibility of having the Hawks next game with Liberty Hill if they win this weekend.
R-F Pirates are on a four game winning streak as they have scored over 50 points in four of those games.
That last game was against Zapata the runner-up in their district and scoring a resounding win by 36 points.
Quarterback Anthony Resendez will be where this offense will start and on many plays end.
Resendez is fast and can make opposing teams miss on a regular basis and Canyon Lake will have their hands full in containing this player.
Justin Coleman and Austin Sengdara will also get carries on Friday with Logan Jasek getting into the action.
Rockport-Fulton passes about as much as the Hawks and so once again, the Hawks will be facing a team by just looking into the mirror.
Another item to notice is the number of points teams are scoring on the Pirates. Giving up 25 points a game but that would also need to be seen with an asterisk as their winning streak is a different story as they are allowing just 10 points during this span.
Now, The ReSporter does not know the strength of most of these teams being from the Hill Country and all, but the numbers don’t lie and that is why you hear that old saying, ‘That is why they play the games.’
This game will be in the hands of how well your Hawks can hold onto the ball to keep those turnovers down.
Canyon Lake has found many ways to lose this year when controlling all the stat lines you would want to point to a victory only to come from those games empty handed.
Last week, that same scenario was knocking on the door when LaVega ran a fumble back for a touchdown.
CL would have a chance of making a statement in the game only to find themselves with a play that might be pointed to as the most important play of the season.
Stopping a two point conversion.
That stop allowed Canyon Lake to take their kick-off and march down the field for the touchdown and re-establish and build on another lead.
In other words, in those earlier games, the Hawks would have found a way to lose and on this night it became a win, by 23 points.
This time last year, Canyon Lake was looking on how to prepare against a team that beat CL earlier in the season and this week those thoughts are not dancing through the heads of the players.
Who will win? ‘That is why they play the game.’
There will be some points scored and the team that has the best defense can win, which will require the team that comes away from their mirror with that ‘cowlick’ combed being the winner.
