Hawks JV & Varsity Come up Short in Loss to Boerne

Canyon Lake Junior Varsity Missed 3 Pointer Shy of Win

CLJV started their game with Boerne in a hole as the Greyhounds literally scored 14 of the first 17 points in the contest.

But that is when the Hawks would finally open the lid off their goal and got their offense in gear.

In the last 2 minutes of the first quarter, Canyon Lake would unleash four 3 pointers to take the lead after the buzzer sounded to end the first quarter, 16-15.

That show was from the shot of Ryner Martin and Bennie Brownlee to end that stanza.

These two sharp shooters finished with 18 and 11 points respectfully.

Ryner made three 3pointers and Brownlee topped that with a 4 point play on his made 3point goal.

“We were being lazy to begin the game,” Martin observed. “But then Coach (Hooper) called a time out and we worked on plays that allowed us to get our looks and that was what we wanted.”

That offense was also made possible from a pressure defense giving CL those opportunities to get back into the game.

Boerne would not go away as the Greyhounds got their lead back in the 2nd quarter with a 5 point advantage as CL had a sloppy quarter with more turnovers.

Canyon Lake would assert themselves again to start the second half when they scored 22 points as Joseph Boyd started the quarter making 4 free throws and Brownlee 3 assists and another 3 point play the old fashion way.

Then to end the quarter, Martin decided to unleash another three 3 pointers to close out the quarter with a Hawk JV, 46-43 lead.

Martin ended with six 3 pointers for this game and was by far one of the best games since Garrett Winters was on his game when he played on the JV squad.

“After I hit one then I start feeling like ‘Stephen Curry’ and start to get into a streak,” Martin said.

Boerne then made a concerted effort in denying Martin the ball during that final quarter.

“They switched their defender and it changed our game plan and it did not allow me execute what coach had wanted us to do,” Martin said in response to those last few plays .

Canyon Lake held their lead until too many missed free throws and Boerne getting hot for their last push.

Bryce Gammon was integral during this part of the game as he led the Hawks with 4 steals and his steal and 2point layup closed the gap to, 53-54 deficit with 2 minutes left in the game.

Canyon Lake just could not find the right combination during the ending of this game as Boerne proved to be better from the free throw line in winning the game by 3 points.

CLJV next game will be against Gonzales in district play as the JV team has added some depth from players coming from the Varsity team.

“That gives us a lot of depth and means we are strong from the second unit,” Martin closed.

Canyon Lake Varsity Could Not Get Started in Loss to Boerne

Canyon Lake could not match up in their loss to Boerne for their last game before the Christmas break, 66-34.

This Greyhound team had dead eye shooters and a suffocating zone that did not allow the Hawks to get into any offensive flow.

“Their 1-3-1 zone was really good and tough,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman said. “That is something that we haven’t seen all season and something we probably won’t face the rest of the year, especially as good as that.”

Well there is certainly good news in that CL will hopefully not face another defense as stout since the Hawks have had their two worst offensive games against this Boerne team, averaging 34.5 points in those two losses.

The 34 and 33 points of offensive are the two lowest scores this year for Canyon Lake.

“We knew coming in that they would go to it and we prepared for it but it is hard to replicate their length in practice,” Coach Chapman assessed.

The Hawks started the game strong as they rushed out to a quick 7-2 lead from the opening tip and kept a lead up to the last minute of the quarter when Boerne reclaimed a lead that would never be threatened again in this contest.

“We did not do a good job of being aggressive against them,” Coach Chapman said. “We got back on our heels and allowed them to control what we did.”

Boerne certainly made their point as those two middle quarters the Greyhounds had a 38-17 point advantage with their good shooting and shut-down defense.

It was hard for CL to amass rebounds when Boerne was shooting lights out as the only defensive rebound came from taking the ball from the bottom of the net.

Brandon Ward was high point with 8 as Rory Preiss had 7 points all in that first half.

Jacob Ramirez secured the most rebounds for CL with 6 and Ward played well with a team high 4 steals.

Now the Hawks will take some days off before they strap on their shoes for an end of year tourney in Fredericksburg against Savio.

“Right now we are still looking at personnel and who is going to help us the best and help us do what we want to do,” Coach Chapman closed. “We are always focused on two things in each game, taking care of the ball and attacking the paint and all of our decisions will revolve around those two things.”

Canyon Lake has 6 wins so far this campaign and with just two more wins will pass the past two years in that department as the Hawks prepare for district play when the new year commences after the Fredericksburg tourney.
