Softball: Hawks Hang on in Win over Luling, 6-5
Canyon Lake finished their 2nd day at the Huber Ranch Softball Tournament and for the second day in a row finished with one win and one loss as the Hawks held off the Luling Eagles, 6-5 for the win.
This game would give Hawk fans a reason to think this year might be different as Maggie Banks came into the game to relieve Starter Alexis Robinson and as Banks pitched 2.1 innings giving up no runs for the win.
Robinson had the hot bat with 2 doubles and driving in 2 runs but it was a Robinson run off the bat of Kat Weber that had the final run and win for Canyon Lake.
“This week I had been struggling at the plate,” Robinson started. “I knew I needed to focus on my at bats and it finally worked.”
On how it worked in the win when Banks was able to come in for a good relief job, “It is nice to have relief this early in the spring and right now I am just waiting for district to come around.”
In that final at bat, CL had Robinson leading off and a hard hit got her to first and a misplayed ball allowed an advancement to 2nd base.
Sophomore Lauren Mentzer advanced Robinson to 3rd base on a ground out which brought Weber to the plate with a chance of ending the game.
A long single to the wall was the result as Robinson waltzed across home plate for a hard fought win over the Eagles.
The Weber hit was her 3rd dinger of the game and her 2nd rbi to go with her three hits in the game.
“Jeffrey (Mr. Robinson) told me to make contact,” Weber said when recalling her final at bat when she knocked in the winning run. “There has been a lot of changes and everyone seems to be giving more effort….we made our game plan happen and everyone worked hard on their effort.”
This game might have been a loss if not for having some extra arms and having Banks coming in to spell Robinson certainly played well for Canyon Lake and hopefully there is more where that came from.
Canyon Lake certainly has some work to do defensively as they committed 4 errors in each game giving the opposition some extra opportunities to get momentum and that played a key roll in the second game with St. John Paul as the Hawks could not overcome those 4 miscues in the loss.
CL is now 3-2 with two more games on Saturday starting at 8am and then their last game at noon.
Freshman Bailey Bryan had a good day with 3 hits in 7 at bats while many other Hawks helped in their two games.
Go Hawks!!
