Softball: Hawks End Week-End with 3 Game Win Streak
Canyon Lake found a way to win after sweeping their 3 games in the Hill-Country Tournament.
Playing teams your own size was certainly part of this turn around but their last victory was against a 5A Kerrville Tivy team.
Maggie Banks was in the circle for this outing and she pitched a gem after giving up 4 hits and just one walk in this 5 inning affair. A change up that could have had the opposing batter taking two swings at the Banks pitch on several occasions.
“She’s (Banks) improved all year long,” Head Coach John Gallagher said. “Her key is the change-up and all of her pitches were on today and our offense looked good too.”
Having a pitch like a change-up working, will always give an advantage to a pitcher as the opposing offense cannot predict when that crafty offer might be called upon.
There were a couple of Tivy players that could have had two swings on Banks pitch.
Banks was in the strike zone for much of this game, as she had strikes on 3 out of every 4 pitches thrown.
“Usually during my warm-ups but most of the time during the game,” Banks said in response on when she might realize her off-speed pitch might be on for any given game. “I am more focused and feel more relaxed.”
Banks also responded on how her, at bats, seem to be better this season.
The Hawks struck first in their 2nd inning as Jessie Melendez had a hard liner to right-center field that went to the fence allowing Melendez to motor around the bases for an one out triple.
A wild-pitch would score Melendez and a, 1-0 CL lead.
“Melendez is getting back into it,” Coach Gallagher said in regards that Melendez had been busy playing another sport these past few weeks.
Tivy got on the score-board in their next inning with 2 singles after two outs had been recorded. That first single had another base taken after the first of 2 errors for Canyon Lake. Kerrville would score on that second hit to tie the score at 1 all.
The Hawks responded in the bottom of the 3rd inning when Marley Carrizales had a bunt single and then took 2nd on a wild pitch. Kenzie Sayles would work her second walk of the game.
A double steal had CL set with two runners in scoring position when Bailey Bryan came to bat. Her second single of the contest would score Carrizales and then a wild pitch scored Sayles one batter later.
Those two runs scored would be enough for the Hawks to notch their 3rd consecutive win as they continue to right the ship after starting the season 0-fer in those tournament games last week.
Kerrville would score their final run in the 4th inning after a lead-off triple that scored on a sacrifice fly.
There was no more damage as a nifty defensive play that had the final out going off the glove of Banks to Bryan and then the throw to first base.
An overall improvement coming early on after this team not finishing in several outings against larger schools.
Last week’s Canyon Tournament had Canyon Lake taking on two 5A and four 6A schools and then a Tuesday game with another 5A school in Marble Falls.
Canyon Lake will continue to work on different facets of the game as the Hawks look to see which line-up might be more optimal. In this Tourney, Marley Carrizales and Kenzie Sayles were switched between the lead-off and second batter.[
Sayles has proven she will be a tough out as this season blooms with a .514 average and having a balmy 14 hits in the first 11 games played. Carrizales started out of the gate with four hits in her 9 at bats with 3 walks.
Having that type of one-two punch will help in giving CL fast starts this season.
“We are trying to see what will work for us,” Coach Gallagher said like a mad scientist. “We need to improve our discipline at the plate….after last week’s tourney we had some hard tough games and that has helped us grow quick.”
“We held our own and we keep progressing and we are mentally tougher and we have confidence.”
After starting with an 8 game losing streak, the tide has changed with winning 3 games and hoping for more.
