CL Hawks Become the Jones’ in Smithville Win, 50-30

Smithville started the game with three straight, 3 plays and a punt, and when the Tigers looked up Canyon Lake would have a 20 point lead which would end up being the final point differential in this win, 50-30.
Canyon Lake continued to up their points and starting the 4th Quarter, The Lake was up 40 points with every player suited up getting on the field before this game came to a close.
“Our offense came out blowing on all cylinders,” Head Coach Charley Drum said. “We were excited about having other guys that had a chance to contribute and taking the field….We had a lot of explosive plays.”
The Hawks had a Top Ten Offensive night and ended up with 33 first downs beating that all-time number by 5 in this victory.

There would be some first ever in this contest after a fumble return for a touchdown when Jacob Ruff picked up the pigskin and darted 71 yards to the end-zone. The last defensive touchdown was back 5 years ago during a playoff win over Waco La Vega.
This contest knotted the Hawks with a .500 percentage for wins and losses (58-58) going into The Lakes game with Blanco next Friday.
Ironically, CL has reached this plateau just once during their opening game starting a 2012 campaign against? Blenco. Then a rash of upheaval that found the Hawks falling to 13 games under that break-even barrier.
On this try next week, Canyon Lake, will attempt to reach a winning record for their first time ever after a 1-9 ledger in that maiden first campaign..
Tristan Chacon would have his best rushing day this year, breaking that 100 yard barrier and finishing with 113 in this win. Chacon was joined by Ruff when he reached 131 yards. The Hawks were offensive against the Smith family with their best output just 4 yards shy of 500, as stated above.
A lineman that was instrumental in this offensive outburst was Sophomore Hudson Duke, “I had a few good plays and I almost got the quarterback once,” Duke remembered.
On how this season is progressing as a newbie this season, “I love it…this is amazing…the intensity is much higher and this is just a whole other level…. I have seen the game slowing down since my first game.”
CL was having to rely on several younger players after the line lost so many good players from last year’s team.
Starts Cafe Says Go Hawks!
Consistency for 3 quarters was evident with all facets running at a break-neck speed.
A 30 point second quarter and starting their 2nd half with a quick TD and a repeat score 9 minutes later, when Ethan Slater scored CL’s 50th point and a 40 point lead. That was the time that all of CL’s players would have a chance to get in the game. The Hawks had brought several JV players up for this battle after their Thursday contest was cancelled by weather.
Another first? How bout 3 Hawk players from the same family playing in the same game!! Josh-Caleb-Partick Almond were able to reach that goal for a Dad who had missed games last year while being part in helping the United States in Korea.
“I was excited for Patrick (Almond),” Caleb Almond stated. “We have always been separated and Patrick was amazing, I will have to perform to stay ahead of him now.”
Josh Almond is a man with few words but when he is in your presence then you do take notice with this specimen, “No, It’s kist a natural thing,” Josh calculated when asked if he would block for his brothers more than other players.
Caleb and Josh are twins and Patrick trails his brother by two years, “I think I am going to catch them.” Strong words by this Sophomore who will have some big shoes to fill as he chases and trying to emulate his brothers.

Canyon Lake would score on every possession in that 1st Half and then having Ruff scoring on that fumble return would put this game away quickly.
The Lake has had a 4-0 record once back during the 2011 year. That crew finished the season with an 8-2 record with out a chance to compete in the playoffs. Two losses during district play and losing a tie-breaker by 7 points put a damper for those games.
CL’s defense did a good job but did give up 20 points in that final quarter. Greyson Lee continues his strong showing leading the Hawks in tackles after another impressive showing, “We look at each game the same and we give each team the respect….this was homecoming and we started with some excitement….We got a lot of players in to play and that was pretty good.”
This is the time for Canyon Lake to hone their skills in preparation as district will be here in 3 weeks and getting to that level will be paramount in not missing the boat.
Canyon Lake will have a short drive to Blanco to finish their pre-district slate this Friday with game time starting at 7:30pm.
Coach Drum talked on his thoughts as this year starts to go get closer with district play, “We have to get better each week…our district will be physical and every team are legit and we will work to get better each week.”
