CL’s Junior Varsity Dish Out Defense in Win Over Weiss, 20-8

Hawks JV goes 2-0 after convincing 20-8 win over Weiss Wolves.

Canyon Lake’s Junior Varsity improved their season to, 2-0 after another excellent defensive effort in a win over Weiss, 20-8.

Suffocating could be another way of describing The Lake’s JV defense after another game of allowing just one first down in that first half while using a 12 play 69 yard drive that gave a Hawk lead while draining the clock for these visitors.

CL’s first drive ended with a fumble and 3rd drive ending with no time left on the clock.

With two interceptions in that 2nd half by Blayne Carnes helped harness the Wolves pass attack in that 2nd half having those two thefts starting and ending this half.

“I was getting my keys from our safeties,” Carnes recounted. “I was reading the receivers and QB’s eyes and noticed that they were throwing more short passes and I saw my opportunity and just got the ball.”

Weiss was able to score once during the 4th quarter on a 41 yard pass play to the flats that had Keilan Rogers using his speed to waltz to the end zone for the Wolves only score.

Blayne Carnes and Connor Windham helped with a line of defense in 2nd Win this season.

Canyon Lake was ahead by two scores when Weiss had their longest drive, a 10 play drive that covered 28 yards, that was helped by 3 explosive plays of over 14 yards or more.

It would be another finishing touch by the Defensive Lineman Connor Windham with a sack on a 4th down play that ended this threat with no damage. With that sack, those 10 plays covered 23 yards or 2.3 yards per snap that would give a layman a good indication of how hard it was for this Weiss team to move the ball.

“We are able to spread our defense out with talent,” Windham gave a breeze. “We have talent everywhere.”

That has been shown during the first two games and continuing this suffocating D will be a key as that ole saying, if they can’t score they can’t win. But in CL’s case, get a 20 point lead and then give up just one score.

Let’s Go Hawks & Stay Cool!!

Offensively, Matthew Soza would take the rock for an impressive 116 up the middle hard yards. Most of those yards (78) came during that second frame with a clinching 23 yard rumble to the end zone to start that 4th quarter. That would be Soza’s 3rd touchdown in the game.

On what this next week’s game will have for the Hawks, “We are going represent Canyon Lake and show them who we are and win this Battle of the Back Bone,” Carnes quipped.

“We are going to work hard in and out of practice,” Windham said simply.

Next week, Canyon Lake will be on the road to Wimberley with a battle on the Back-Bone and a healthy defense that just might be on their menu.

Way to Go Hawks!!
