Hawk’s Baseball Escapes with 6-5 Win over Bandera

The largest contingent of Little Leaguers ever came out to a rain soaked day on Tuesday.

Canyon Lake escaped the Bulldogs scoring the winning run with one out in the bottom of the 7th inning.

                        Let’s Go Hawks!!

Bandera jumped out of the gate with a 3 run bomb by clean-up hitter Pat Cizek that led to an encouraging, ‘we might be in this game till the end,’ moment that lasted for this whole contest.

“We came into this game knowing where they were but district has a way of leveling the playing field and teams start to even up,” Head Coach Victor Escamilla stated. “This is where you can see the upsets and we have the mindset to win the one run ball games. They made some pitches and plays too! For the rest of this year, if you can push them back one spot then you have a chance for a win and today we were able to do that.”

This Bulldog team is presently winless in district play as well of having a 15 game losing streak with that last win on March 3rd against Holy Cross, 11-5. Since that win they have reached 6 runs once and 11 of those contests scored 2 runs or less.

The Lake was coming off a win over the #2 team in the state by that same one run margin which would not seem a good sign all things being considered.

                     Way to Go Hawks!!

Baseball has a way of staging many story lines having so many variables with 9 separate fielders and each at bat and pitcher playing on a team as an individuals. While catching-hitting-throwing a little white ball that has batting with an average over .300 considered as being successful.

So the Hawks would respond scoring on a Chase Anderson single (who finished with his second 3 hit game in a row) and scored on a Griffen Williams ground out. This was the first run scored during the opening frame is district play.

Williams’ 2 run homer in the 3rd tied the score and CL would add another run that next inning when Tanner Schultz singled in Hayden Baker who reached on a walk.

Bandera was not through and scored two runs during their 5th inning and regained the lead, 5-4. This frame had two infield hits that was followed with a walk and a single that actually made it to left fielder Tanner Sellers that tied the game again.

Third Baseman Zach Elson taking care of business in win over Bandera.

With still having one out the Bulldogs used a sacrifice bunt for their one run lead, 5-4 before Schultz put an end to thier rally by striking out those final two Dogs.

Zach Elson reached base after being hit by a pitch with one out and would score when Hunter Anderson grounded out on a fielder’s choice tying the score at 5 runs a piece.

Elson is known for his defense and was inserted when CL needed to change pitcher’s, “Zach (Elson) is our best 3rd baseman and our best in making plays,” Coach Escamilla commented.

“”When you come down to it I just had to come into the game with a laser focus and know I could make plays in this game. It can become a win versus a loss based on how I perform,” Elson said with resolve. “I have to make the plays and trust my instincts enough because of all my repetition and trust my hands..”

On how The Lake will go into this Friday’s game, “I know this game was close but I like to win away games which can be the best but that will help us as we finish this season going into the playoffs and finishing strong.”

CL could not capitalize during that next time at bat but worked two consecutive walks with no outs but it resulted in 2 more runners left on base. The Lake finished with 12 runners being left on base in this outing.

With that final at bat, Canyon Lake took advantage of a one out double from Chase Anderson that was followed with a Hunter Anderson single putting runners on the corners.

A one pitch single to left field would end this tight battle and it will keep CL in the hunt for still having a chance to finish atop the standings with 3 games remaining.

Bandera and CL will battle again this Friday starting at 7pm.

Whewww!!! Way To Go Hawks!!
