Canyon Lake (2-0) discombobulated Austin Reagan on Thursday night as they ransacked the Raiders to the tune of, 48-6.

Yes, The ReSporter knows the word should say ‘ram’sacked, but this Hawk team was firing on all cylinders as they ran up a total of 324 first half yardage with this victory.

“Great effort,” Head Coach Charlie Drum exclaimed. “We did a lot better coming out of halftime closing the game out.”

Coach Drum was commenting on how Canyon Lake has not had the same intensity in the 2nd half to match their opening game tenacity.

“We have a few injuries and we were allowed to get many of our players ready because you never know when we might need someone to go in,” Coach Drum said while talking about how well the bench played when called upon.

On how well the 2nd team defense held Reagan on their last drive, “They took to heart to not let them score and that will help in taking that heart to Giddings….we put them (Giddings) on our schedule for this reason and we wanted to get everyone ready.”

The first two series for this game had both teams unable to garner a first down as Reagan used their 4th down play for a punt while, the Hawks, gambled needing just one yard. That calculation failed allowing Reagan to set up shop on CL’s 40 yard line.

Then the defense would respond with a Lee Stafford interception that was returned 30 yards and the Hawks would take just one play to score and with this lead they were never threatened.

Tanner Faris went wide on his run and down the sideline for this one play 34 yard drive and Hawk lead, 7-0.

“I needed to maintain focus and I just tipped it up first and then I tried to take it to the house,” Stafford said while commenting on his interception. “But it did not happen (taking it to the house)….but we approach everyday and do not get content and that will help us get better.”

Another 3 play and punt for the Raiders had Canyon Lake needing 67 yards for their next possession. It took the Hawk’s 10 plays on a drive taking over 6 minutes for the next Faris score from a 37 yard pass play from QB Ben Fulton and a first quarter score, 14-0.

Ben Fulton passed Jeff Nabors for 3rd place on CL’s thrown touchdown list as he finished this night with two via the airwaves when he found Tristan Chacon for 45 yards to paydirt, on the last drive of the half.

That catch for Chacon was grabbed with one hand and hauled in for a highlight real reception.

“It looked like it would be overthrown,” Chacon commented. “I just ran as fast as I could to catch it.”

With injuries placing Canyon Lake in some need for help, the Hawks went to their JV roster and had Caleb Almond brought up for the fullback slot.

Caleb Almond went 47 yards for his first varsity touchdown, as he finished his night with a nifty 87 yards as CL would finish with 392 total yards as a team on the ground.

Caleb Almond had his brother who is in his second year on the varsity offensive line ready to help.

“They (Reagan) were talented, but we worked them and we could not let them get to us,” Joshua Almond commented on the game. “It took discipline and consistency.”

North Shore Pharmacy says Go Hawks!!

After the Caleb Almond run, Trenton Lorett would be next up when he went 87 yards on a mis-direction play that would give your Hawks a 34 point halftime lead and gravy time for both sides of the line.

Lorett would have a special night for his birthday as this run would have this young man needing help to blow out the candles.

“Very tiring,” Lorett said about his long run. “My next two pat’s (point afters) my legs just gave out.”

Lorett also has the extra point duties and after running 87 yards and then being ready for the kick is not be a given.

“I was just trying to get by their safeties,” Lorett said. “Getting by those players can really tire you out.”

Everyone would get a chance to be tired, in the game, as CL ended the game threatening for another score when the victory formation was formed for those last snaps.

Chacon finished with 3 touchdowns after scoring the last three of the game, which was one more than he had totaled entering the contest for his career.

Go CL Hawks!

There were 9 Hawks that had at least one carry as the defense was close to having another shut-out. Defensively, Canyon Lake allowed the Raiders to convert 20% of their 3rd down plays while winning the turnover battle 2-0.

A game dominated throughout as Reagan went through some growing pains as this school had just 3 returning players from their last year’s squad.

Explosive plays was a weapon used throughout the contest with all the scores coming from 15 or more yards. Canyon Lake totaled 295 yards just on the plays that went for touchdowns, which would be 62% of the total yards gained in this game.

“We have a great team and some amazing players,” OL Jacob Foster said in his own amazing way. “We will get a day of rest and also an extra day to prepare for Giddings.”

Foster was one of many linesman that helped open holes for adding up all the offensive numbers. Looking below will give you an idea of how dominant this part of the Hawk’s game turned out.

Canyon Lake will now have an extra day to prepare for Giddings when they go on the road this next Friday for a battle against a ranked Buffalo team.

This will be a good test to see how this crew of Hawks have improved as they will look to reverse last year’s loss with a chance of starting their season 3-0.
