Tennis: Hawks Come Up Short in Loss to Texans
Rico Griffin & Stormie Dawkins after win over Wimberley in First District 28-4A Contest.
The Hawks Tennis Team was taken down by a well rounded Wimberley Texans group after Canyon Lake was only able to get one win with their Mixed Double team of Rico Griffin and Stormie Dawkins.

“We are much more competitive this year,” Head Coach Corey Mickey stated. “Last year we were beaten 6-0 and this year we won several games and we’re competing more.”
The Lake has doubled their number of students competing since this time last season and with that increase of players can give a chance for better results.
“We are a deeper team,” Coach Mickey continued. “We have better competition at the top and everyone is playing hard and competing.”
These matches start during one of the hottest times of the day (4:00pm) which can help your tan as the players start to get slower as the day wears on, allowing more soaking Sun.
In the Mixed-Double Match, Griffin and Stormie Dawkins were able to keep their unbeaten streak going with a 2-1 Match win.
Winning that first set, 6-3 and then retreating with a, 2-6 loss to this Texan Dual put this game on the line with either team with a chance for a victory.

In the 3rd and final set, Griffin and Dawkins dug themselves in a hole after falling behind, 1-3 with what seemed like a tiring and lackadaisical effort as the sets piled up. Yes, the temperature had dropped one degree but that was felt more on the grass rather an oven floor (Tennis Surface) that could have melted a tennis ball if left alone for any amount of time.
That 2nd Win came just in time and becoming much cooler as Dawkins and Griffin started playing with more consistency and winning the last 5 games to get that final set victory over Wimberley, 6-3.
“We had it in the bag and knew we could make a comeback,” Stormie said with Thunder. “We have been down before and this was no difference.”
“Yeah, we have done it (comeback) before,” Griffin chimed in. “We had to start hitting the middle and place our shots when we needed to.”
Dawkins stated, “ If you can get it (to the ball) then we needed to be more consistent.”
Dawkins played a huge roll in those final 5 games for this sweep as her stroke was placing the ball safe no matter who server was.”
Canyon City Grill says Go Hawks!!
Tennis is the only Hawk Sport that will have a Girl/Boy playing against each other which in some instances will give a greater chance for the Boy to overpower the Ladies. “That can happen in these matches as the boys can have a chance of getting points on the girls.”
Griffin said with a grin, “I’m glad you said that….I did not know how to say it.”
On what this means as this dual continues during this Fall Session? “We want to be #1,” Both Dawkins and Griffin said in unison.
“We have a chance this year,” Griffin closed.
A good back and forth battle on this sweltering day of play and the first contest in District 28-4A competition.
