Hawks Lose to Navarro, 8-4
Hawks could not pull out a win over Navarro losing in extra innings, 8-4 losing their fifth game in a
Dan Krueger running for County Commissioner Pct. 4, Supports Hawks Baseball
row and 7 out of their last 8 games.
This loss will put Friday’s in game in desperation mode as Canyon Lake will be trying to salvage a playoff spot.
Now CL will need to win in Navarro on Friday or face the possibility of not making the playoffs.
Fredericksburg won their game over Bandera and share the same district record as the Hawks and a CL win over Navarro would result in a 3-way tie for two playoff spots.
A coin flip would determine which teams that would need to play an elimination game for that 4th spot.
Does not sound good for Canyon Lake as they have left luck several weeks ago and that ugly word ‘bad’ has been attached to whatever luck the Hawks might be having.
Case and point, pitcher Nick Kissell was taken out of last nights game after feeling some pain in his arm, resulting in another player injured without knowing his status for future games.
Add more bad luck with third baseman Garrett Winters suffering a broken finger two weeks ago and taking one of the Hawks best infielders out of action.
Canyon Lake has some good news as this set of circumstances has put Coach Dunavant in a jig-saw puzzle game again in which he has had several years of practice in juggling lineups for Hawk teams these past 4 years.
The Hawks were not crisp in this game and looked like a team doing a free fall.
Six errors and only two of the four hits making the outfield grass gave a sense of a lifeless team. Also, add 16 strikeouts to this game account and you have another opposing pitcher made to look like Roger Clemens.
‘It is hard to win with six errors,” Head Coach Trent Dunavant said. “We made some plays and did not make others.”
Canyon Lake still had a chance to win by responding in making three of their four hits count for runs.
The Hawks answered Navarro’s first run in the third inning when JJ Nance hustled down first base line for an infield hit to start the inning.
The Panther pitcher was errant on a pick off attempt allowing Nance to move to third base where he scored on a wild pitch.
CL scored to answer a 2 run Navarro lead the next inning when Nick Cahill led off with a walk and stole second. Kyle Krohn reached base after a pass ball on a strikeout while Cahill advanced to third.
A Nance sacrifice fly scored Cahill and the Hawks trailed by one run without a hit in that inning.
Another infield hit for Tyler Vinson beating a throw in the sixth inning helped set the stage in a tied game in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Vinson advanced around the bases on a wild pitch and a pitcher errant throw, when Cody Powell had a the first solid hit of the game up the middle for a tied score.
One inning later TJ Jones had CL’s next solid hit when he sliced a hit to right field that had so much spin on the ball it bounced to the corner of the outfield allowing Jones to record a triple with no outs in the bottom of the 7th inning.
A botched squeeze play ended this threat and Navarro would string five hits in the top of the eighth inning to score 5 runs and increase Canyon Lakes woes with another loss.
Pitcher Tanner McGill did respond in those middle innings when Kissell was taken out of the game and had hit his groove in shutting down Navarro with goose eggs for three innings leading up to that last stanza.
Good pitching giving Canyon Lake a chance for a win.
Baseball is well known for superstitions and CL might be in their funk based on breaking one of those cardinal rules.
So, whoever stepped on the infield line needs to get their act together before this Friday’s game.
