The Hawks spring sports will be in full motion as all but Boys Track will have some live action this week.

This year’s Tennis Team has some deserving Athletes that you might want to get out and see as they will be playing Blanco in a dual match starting at CL’s Tennis Courts at 4pm.

The Girls Softball team will have two games at home this week as they will try to improve on their 3-3 record and explosive offensive start against Marion and the Navarro tournament last week.

Both Boys and Girls Soccer will be taking the field with the Boys playing in Seguin and Dripping Springs. The Girls will also mirror that schedule but will play at home. Both teams are 0-1 in District play and will look to get a win against Seguin. Both of these Districts will take four out of five teams to the playoffs so a win over the Matadors will go a long way in helping to cement that playoff spot.

Baseball will start their season with their season opening game at Hawk diamond this Monday night for the varsity. This will be a year where depth will finally be a reality for both Varsity and JV. The Varsity will then have a Tournament in Lockhart.

The JV will also be at home against Wimberley this Friday after a game in Marble Falls on Tuesday. This is another team that has tons of talent and would be a great time to see what type of future will be forthcoming.

The Boys Golf team has had a couple of outings so far this year and will be in hopes of lowering their scores. A good day two weeks ago and not so good last week. (such is life on the links)

Girls Track will be in Boerne to get some work in everything but their Relay teams. Coach Lacey Lambert will be in the process of seeing which girls might be able to get much needed points in the field and running events.

This past couple of years Canyon Lake has seemed to be able to have good Relay teams, especially that coveted Mile Relay event.

Lady Hawks Place 3rd in their Pool at the Navarro Tournament

Saturday, February 16th, 2013

One truism you can take from Softball Tournament games when starting out your season is a team does everything they can to see all of their players.

A smiling Lilimae Daily thinking about her next hit.

Hence the third place finish in their pool is not a bad circumstance based on when Coaches are searching for that diamond that might come out in game situations.

The Lady Hawks lost their first game with Poteet, 10-5 but rebounded quite well when they squashed Luling for their final contest, 17-2.

Also note that if CL is working on giving pitchers time in the circle, then you have to surmise that other teams are working on finding those same ‘diamonds’ for their clubs.

Kelsey Ahrens and Cameron Berger both got some circle duties on Saturday as Head Coach John Gallagher is searching for some answers there as well as in the field as several players had an opportunity to show off.

Canyon Lake is sprinkled with many Freshman and Sophomores this year, but it might be those Seniors that will supply the leadership needed by word or action.

Super Fan: Bill Phillips

Saturday, February 16th, 2013

Super Fan Mr. Bill Phillips can be seen at almost all of Canyon Lake’s venues

Bill Phillips enjoying a Baseball game in the warmth of a Press Box

cheering on young athletes in many fields.

You have seen him, he has that special place in the Hawk Gymnasium, up behind the student section, or walking up to a press box during a football game, or how about seeing Phillips hanging out at countless Baseball and Little League games.

“I played Junior High Softball because there was no baseball at my school,” Mr. Bill started. “With both of my brothers, we played every sport.”

So going back to Junior High days the seed had been planted and now you have ‘Super Fan’ still showing his support for athletes in the Canyon Lake community.

Just sitting by Bill and watching a game will give you wisdom as you listen to all of his recollections of games from the past.

Not to mention his countless one liners that are lined up inside his mind like every Baseball Coach would be preparing a line-up card.

Coaches know him as ‘Bill’ and seeing him at all of their games does not go unnoticed.

“My Dad played semi-pro baseball back in 1938 when we moved down to Houston,” Mr. Bill continued. “I have been around the kids watching them play and grow with all of their skills and attitudes.”

Softball: Hawks start season with 2-2 Record

Saturday, February 16th, 2013

Canyon Lake Softball team won their first game in the Navarro tournament on Thursday with a No-No, when Alexis Robinson pitched to start her promising career.

A Freshman that can pitch a no-hitter in her first game speaks well for Coach John Gallagher’s sleeping for the next four years.

The game was won 9-0 over Stockdale while CL also showed that they might have some pop in their bats.

Missy Romero started her Sophomore campaign with a Perfect Game on February 18, 2010, over Vandergrift, 5-0. Now, the baton has been passed as Robinson begins this season in like manner.

Last night the Lady Hawks beat Marion 13-7 after being up 10-0 going into the later innings.

More information will be forthcoming as Canyon Lake continues their week-end with two games today at Huber Ranch in the last day of Navarro’s Tournament.

Games today will be played at 12:15 and possibly 3:50 Saturday afternoon.

Baseball: CLJV wallops a YellowJacket, 15-7

Friday, February 15th, 2013

Canyon Lake JV dominates Llano in their last scrimmage before the season starts next week.

Catcher Bryce Dehlin showed that all Catchers aren't slow after hitting a triple.

Llano only had three pitchers for this scrimmage and that left Canyon Lake taking the field for an extra two frames just so Coach Brian Owens could get enough work from his six pitchers.

What Coach Owens saw was another dominating performance from several of his players on the mound as strikes and defense kept Llano without a run until their last at bat.

Look at these numbers from four Hawk pitchers:

name ip r er h bb so balls/strikes
 Headrick 2 0 0 0 0 3 9/18
 McCleary 2 0 0 3 1 3 11/23
 Volz 1 0 0 0 1 1 5/11
 Kissell 2 0 0 0 3 3 21/16

As the night progressed so did the wind and temperature as the last inning was a numbing affair.

Hawks Basketball JV End Season with Loss, 51-39 to Bulldogs

Thursday, February 14th, 2013

The Canyon Lake JV ended their season in Bandera after suffering an anemic fourth quarter losing, 51-39.

That 12 point difference was much closer as the game was still within reach as Bandera started the last quarter up by two points, 34-32.

“We were able to keep it close for three quarters,” Coach Brian Hooper stated. “The biggest reason why the game got out of hand in the fourth, was in giving up to many rebounds.”

“Three possessions in a row Bandera had multiple shots on offense that led to easy buckets, and we couldn’t respond,” Coach Hooper closed. “Bandera had a big physical line up that wore us down in the fourth.”

Garrett Winters led all Hawk scorers with 12 points and Sean Nolan missed double digits with nine.

            1 2 3 4 Final
 Hawks JV 6 16 13 4 39

Garrett Winters 12, Sean Nolan 9, Skyler Tschoepe 7, Austin Acosta 4,
Dave Pfaff 3, Qurion Banks 2, Scott Taylor 2.

CL Freshman Pull a JV Game in Win over Bandera

Wednesday, February 13th, 2013

by Coach Barthels

Canyon Lake started off slow, but great defense in the 2nd and 3rd quarters along with a strategic well played 4th quarter of scoring helped the CLHS Freshmen have a come from behind victory last night in Bandera, 45-43.

Trailing the entire game and down by seven early in the 4th, the Hawks mounted their comeback.

Scoring a quick four points off of steals by Hayden Lee and Joe Arredondo who found Brandon Ward streaking down the court for two uncontested lay-ups and a crucial 3 pointer by Justin Ferris, his only points of the game, tied it at
41.

The lead never belonged to the Hawks until their was 5.2 seconds left and Hayden Lee drew the defense into him and made a great pass to a streaking Mason Montgomery for a lay-up and the game winner.

With a turn over on the inbounds play the Hawks were able to get the ball back into Hayden Lee who was fouled for a 1 and 1. Missing the freethrow and placing everyone back to play defense had the Bandera Bulldogs driving down to the opposite end of the court forcing a three point shot over the back board sealing the victory for the Hawks.

Nine of the 12 Hawks that were dressed scored points, but even those that did
not score made great passes down low to the posts who were able to put up
25 points in the paint.

Big rebounds by Dalton Head, Hayden Lee, and Robert Woods will be a stat that gets over looked, but they all played a crucial role in sealing a victory and getting chances for the Hawks to set up the offense.

Canyon Lake finished the season 9-14 and 2-8 in district play,”We
played in several close games this year that we were not able to come out on
top in, this victory was a great way to end the season, I am proud of our
team for all of the hard work they put in this season,” Coach John Batthels closed.

             1 2 3 4 Final
 CLHS 6 9 13 17 45
 Bandera 13 9 8 12 43
 Leading Scorers:
Robert Woods 12, Brandon Ward 8, Hayden Lee 7, Zach Gregory 6, Sam Langford

Wednesday, February 13th, 2013

Varsity Baseball: Is Pleased with game against Burnet

Wednesday, February 13th, 2013

Watching Baseball through new Screen.

The Hawk Varsity Baseball team had a satisfactory scrimmage at Burnet last Tuesday night.

Yes, this was a scrimmage meaning that you don’t have a winner or losing team, but after having two years where everything that could go wrong going wrong, then The ReSporter will give your Hawks the win last evening.

“The game went good last night,” Head Coach Trent Dunavant said. “We would’ve won if this would not had been a scrimmage.”

Canyon Lake had two glaring problems in the past two campaigns: Pitching and fielding would be those nagging weights that bogged down this team in the past.
