This Week in Sports for Canyon Lake
Sunday, January 26th, 2014Hawk Basketball Week’s Review & Top Three
Sunday, January 26th, 2014Canyon Lake Boys Basketball does not have much time to get their act together for a playoff spot.
There is still a chance for the Hawks to make the High School Dance thanks in part to an UIL ruling that allows 4 teams to qualify from each district.
This week’s game with Wimberley will be pivotal in this quest as a win would put CL in a position to make a statement this year.
The football team pulled off two rounds of playoffs with a losing record, but the difference in these two scenarios was the Hawks finishing 3rd when they finished their district season.
Hawks Fall Flat in Loss to Wimberley, 70-46
Friday, January 10th, 2014
Canyon Lake’s first quarter started so bad that the score was Skyler Tschoepe 10 and Wimberley 27 in the second quarter.
In fact the first Hawk not named Tschoepe to score was Isaac Mendez with a little less than four minutes left in the first half.
Tschoepe finished with 16 points and 14 rebounds in a game that was hard to find a positive vibe.
Canyon Lake had 19 points in the first half which also matched the number of turnovers for a Hawk team that found it hard to beat a press put on by the Texans.
The Hawks would pull within 11 points with an 8 point run to start the second half, but after Luke Curry scored five points in a 10 second period out spurt the Basketball gods decided to let this hot Hawk to go down with an ankle injury.
Coaches Corner with Lucas Chapman
Thursday, January 9th, 2014The ReSporter: Your thoughts on this team before the season and now…what is something
you have seen that you did not expect?
Coach Chapman: “I think we are finally shaping up to be the team I expected in the pre-season. We are getting up and down the court a lot more and using our athleticism to our advantage. We are steadily improving and for the first time maybe in the history of our program we are playing our best going into district. I don’t know if things are happening that I didn’t expect, I am just glad that we are starting to play like I expected.”
The ReSporter: What has happened that you thought would be better?
Coach Chapman: “I thought we would be better with our man defense, which has been our calling card the past few seasons. Fortunately, we have found an alternative (our zone) that has worked really well for us and has allowed us to play more of the style that we would like to play. Now that I have really looked at it and studied it, our personnel is better suited for a zone defense because it allows us to scramble around and get more steals and deflections. We will still play man defense, but the zone has really saved us this year.”

Hawks Sweep Gonzales with Varsity and JV Victories
Wednesday, January 8th, 2014Canyon Lake solved their starting slow mantra when they accumulated 23 points in the first quarter against Gonzales and coasted to their final non-district win, 52-39 last Tuesday night at the Hawk Gym.
“We finally came out from the start at home and made a statement,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman said. “I feel a lot better now than I did two weeks ago and we have come a long way…we are ready to play.”
Hawk Freshman Boys Teepee Gonzales Apaches, 52-39
Wednesday, January 8th, 20141 2 3 4 Final Gonzales 2 2 13 8 25 Canyon Lake 16 7 11 11 45
The Hawk Freshmen basketball team came out fast this week as they were able to jump on the Apaches early.
It was a slow start for both teams until the Hawks applied pressure a few minutes into the game.
A few steals and quick passes later the Hawks were up for good in the game.
A 23-4 Halftime lead and hot shooting for the Apaches made this one a little more interesting than it seemed in the second half. The Apaches were able to rally to within 9 points until the Hawks applied pressure again.
“We put in a new press this week that is more of a risk reward press, tonight it just happened to be rewarded as they were only able to break it once.” Coach Barthels stated. “We had Wilkins get banged up a little on the first possession of the game, but Preiss stepped in and did a great job at the point guard tonight.”
The Hawks will need everyone to step up this week as Canyon Lake begins district play against a very tough district from here on out.
“All of the freshmen groups this year are tough in district.” Coach Barthels finished. “We are going to have to play our best basketball and be aggressive if we are going to beat the district teams this year.”
Boy’s Basketball Climbing the Charts
Sunday, January 5th, 2014Climbing the Charts
Canyon Lake Boy’s Basketball has a short history but as we partake in a mid/season time period The
ReSporter wanted to show how this team of players stack up with previous players in the record book.
The players in kelly green are the current players and in each category there will be players that have ranked in the top 5 or more levels.
So, seeing a current player ranked sixth might not mean they are the sixth best ever with that stat.
You will be able to tell by looking at the official number of points (or whatever the stat is) that this player has many more points needed to enter into the higher stratosphere.
Hawks Working on Consistency after Finishing Blanco Tourney
Saturday, January 4th, 2014Canyon Lake finished 0fer in their last two games of the Blanco Holiday Hoopfest Tournament on
Saturday.

CL had a problem getting out of the gate in both affairs after accounting for only 7 points in each game.
However the second quarter was a team that played with rhythm as in each case the Hawks held their own or was able to chip away at the deficit.
Andrew Riali took top honors again in being the Hawk’s best scorer with a 14 and 11 point games.
