Volleyball: Hawk’s Freshman Outlast Somerset, 2-1

Wednesday, August 27th, 2025

Libero Anastasia Schultz & Breanna Fitzpatrick both showed moxie in Hawk’s Win over Somerset.

Both Sub-Varsities were victorious with CL’s Freshman being a part of one the more exciting matches coming back for a, 26-24. 23-25, 15-12.

The Lady Hawks jumped out to a quick 4 point lead but before that first rotation was completed found themselves in a close affair that quickly turned to being down 4 points, 18-22 before a Breanna Fitzpatrick serving a 4 point rally that tied the game at 23 all.

That rally had a Somerset error and a Fitzpatrick ace followed with a kill for Kyrn Menchaca and Katelyn Maxson.

A Peyton McCombs kill on a Lake next serve put this first set into the wings of the Hawks.

Coach Trevor Hamblet commented, “We faced a great test from a competitive team! The girls were very resilient and battled through adversity to pull out a victory in the final set. Kyra Menchaca was a phenomenal leader making plays as a setter and hitter. Katelyn Maxson also had some great serves and swings down the stretch to help win the game.”

That deciding set was inked when these Bulldogs overcame another 4 point Hawk lead, 17-13. Somerset ended this set when solid play totaling 9 points with 3 servers turning the tide (23-25) in favor when the visitors won by putting this game in a winner take all final set.

This final set had The Lake in a close battle before the Hawks forged to a vicarious 2 point advantage, 9-7 when McComb and Lauren Nouh each with a kill for that rally.

Another Hawk 2 point lead, 10-8 lead was quickly rectified by Somerset but another 2 point rally on a Bulldog error and a McComb ace ballooned the lead, 12-8.

From there this final set had that resilient Hawk team covering the floor with carpet led by Libero Anastasia Schultz and a Lake defense that kept the pressure on Somerset with more errors and a Hawk win, 15-12.

CLake had 4 players each with 3 kills:
Peyton McCombs, Lauren Nouh, Kyrn Menchaca, and Katelyn Maxson.
Lauren Nouh also led this Hawk attack garnering 3 aces.

A well played win and as always, Way to Go Lake!!

                         Let’s GO LAKE!

Canyon Lake finished off their Scrimmage Season last Thursday in San Antonio against a talented Central Catholic squad.

Now, The Lake, will go into preparation mode with a perennial power Wimberley Texas team comes to the Hawk Nest in the Battle of the Back Bone. Which has not been a game that has had much Hawk success during these past few seasons.

A second year with a new offense should prove to be fruitful along with a salty defense which returns most all of their starters from last year.

Kick-off will be at 7:00pm which will have both stands packed so be early to enjoy the pre-game festivities as CLHS starts their 18th year of football.

Volleyball continues to show improvement after another successful tourney at Pieper where The Lake finished with a 3-3 record against some tough teams.

                           Let’s Go Lake!

Head Coach Daniella Villarreal had this to say bout last week’s contests, “We finished the tournament 3-3, competing against tough opponents in every match. I was really proud of how the girls stepped up and competed at a high level. The caliber of play at this tournament was exactly what we needed to help prepare us for district.

One of the highlights was our match against Harlan, who went on to win the tournament. We lost 21-25 and 20-25, but the girls truly battled and made Harlan earn every point.

Make a Deposit & Go Hawks!!

We also played Laredo United South twice, and the second matchup was one of our best games of the weekend. The game before that we played Glenn, and we struggled with our energy to translate to gaining momentum to score. After that lose, we discussed controlling the things we could control, and we came out focused, stronger, and played much better the next time against United South to beat them in 2 sets vs in 3 sets like the first time.

Individually, outside hitter Preslie Owens really stood out offensively, consistently putting balls away to end rallies quickly. Another positive was our depth on the bench. I can turn to the bench and count on subs who are ready to step in, make an impact, and provide a spark when we need it.

We’re looking forward to our match tomorrow against Somerset and then competing in the Seguin Tournament this weekend! It’s really fun to watch the girls compete at such a high level.”

Come see the another home game against Somerset this Tuesday with first serve at 500p for sub-varsity with the Varsity following that battle.

CL Tennis received their first loss last week against Devine and will back in action this Thursday at Davenport at they start their Fall District 26-4A schedule.

The Lake’s Varsity Volleyball ran their record to 5-2 after sweeping Gonzales at the Hawk Nest, 25-11 25-21 25-09.

Way to Make us Proud Hawks!!

CLHS jumped out to a 9-2 lead and never looked back in that first set. Chloe Gray started the set serving and had help with a Gabby Fory and Kylie Rodriguez kill shot and 3 unforced errors by the Apaches.

It was that second set Gonzales woke up and secured a, 13-13 tie and a Coach Daniella Villarreal time-out.

After that break the Lake forged a, 21-14 advantage before these Apaches rebooted with a 4 point rally closing the contest to, 23-20.

It was Preslie Owens who had two consecutive kills that helped in a, 25-21 win.

Canyon Lake decided to not waste around in a one rotation route, 25-9.

                               GO LAKE!

It was KC Caraway who served for an 11 point drowning rally that had 2 Chylea Gray kills, 3 blocks (Mackenzie Dorn, Kinsley Van Meter, and Te’a Gonzales), and 2 aces closing out a 3 point lead, 8-5 that ballooned to 19-6 advantage.

Set-Game-Match win and on to a Hawk second tournament at Pieper High School where CL will have an opportunity to face a SA Lee school that beat the Hawks, 2-1 in last week’s tournament.

This will prove to be a good test for district to show if a first round loss can be turned around to a win in those round-about district schedules.

Gabby Fory and Mackenzie led the Lake with 8 kills that had 9 different players getting in the kill line-up.

Chloe Gray led with 26 assists and 10 digs in this total dominating battle.

Canyon Lake will be in action at home again next Tuesday when Somerset sets foot on the Hawk home court.

Volleyball Hawk Gold Sweep Gonzales, 25-18, 25-13

Wednesday, August 20th, 2025

Le’a Gonzales gets her left handed kill on her 3rd try during this volley in win over her namesake.

Hit Man says get rid of Pests Hawks!

The Lake’s Gold (JV) evened their record in sweeping Gonzales at the Hawk Nest, 25-18 25-13.

The first set Lake did not get separation and not having more that a 2 point advantage until Harper Harrison scored on 3 consecutive aces ballooning a Lake advantage to 5 points, 21-16.

From their Brailey McCurdy and Hayley Mechler kills added by another ace from Cameron Parker combined with unforced errors by these Apaches would seal that first set for this Home team, 25-18.

With 9 unforced Lake errors in that first set being the main culprit in not forcing an advantage during those first volleys opening this battle.

                         Let’s Go Lake!

In a convincing second set, The Lake forged this win on Ella Parker’s service with a 5 point rally leaving CL Gold in command leading, 16-7.

Te’a Gonzales led the team with 6 kills with 4 of those in that second set combined with 2 more aces from Mechler.

Head Gold Coach Kara Barnes surmised, “We have really been focusing on turning the negatives into positives. The girl’s have been doing a really good job of shifting their mindset after an error to help them win the next point. I think they demonstrated that well in the second set and we were able to gain some momentum to earn the win!

We have been working on building team chemistry, since we do have a young team, and I have been very proud of how they continue to encourage each other and work towards this goal.”

This Gold Team will find themselves with some more positive moments when they welcome Somerset to the Hawk’ Nest next Tuesday with q first serve starting at 5:00pm.

Hawk Sports are back in full swing after having CL’s Volleyball finish with a 4-2 record and winning the Bronze Bracket Crown at Corpus Christy Tournament.

Head Coach Daniella Villarreal surmised, “We are proud to share that Canyon Lake came away as Bronze Bracket Champions, and Chloe Gray was recognized with All-Tournament honors.

Chloe and Kylie Rodriguez did an outstanding job running the court for us. They are our steady presence, never leaving the floor and serving as strong leaders their teammates can always count on.

On Day 1, we had a tough pool draw against CC Veterans Memorial and LEE. Veterans Memorial went on to win the entire tournament, and LEE finished third in the Silver Bracket. We battled with both teams, but higher errors on our side prevented us from finishing out those matches.

                      Let’s GO LAKE!

Day 2 was a much better day as the team came out strong and controlled most of the matches. Our offense clicked more consistently, and we served aggressively to keep opponents from running their systems effectively. It was a long day with three matches, capped off with a best-of-five final, but the girl’s showed resilience and toughness to finish as Bronze Bracket champions.

I’m especially proud of how they bounced back after a challenging first day. We talk often about how struggles, setbacks, and tough moments make us stronger. This weekend was a great example of learning, growing, and becoming better together!”

Volleyball will welcome Gonzales to The Lake this Tuesday before debarking on their 2nd Tourney at Pieper High School starting on Thursday.

                   Let’s Go Lake!

The Hawk Cross Country also debuted at the Hill Country Rust Buster (don’t ask The ReSporter what that means).

Cross Country will in San Antonio this Thursday in a Friday Night Lights (on Thursday) and it is also starts at 7am….Looking at those titles you will have for these first two meets could strike a smile white these Hawk Athletes grimace in their open terrain jaunts.

Lake Tennis has started this season with two wins and will be in action this Wednesday when Devine will come to town with the first serve at 4pm. Bring some shade and water for this event and way to GO Lake!

Football finished their first scrimmage against Burnet last Friday and will continue their pre-season battles on the road in San Antonio when the Hawks battle the Buttons. The Central Catholic scrimmage will begin at 530pm for the sub-varsity teams and then Varsity will have a 700pm final round before starting their season against Wimberley at the Hawk Nest on the 29th of this month.

Lake’s Volleyball Start Season Sweeping Marion

Wednesday, August 13th, 2025

Another Kill for Gabby Fory as (7) Kylee Goff, (11) Chloe Gray and (12) Preslie Owens waits for the results. Go Lake!

The Lake opened up their season with a sweep over Marion Bulldogs at the Hawk Nest on Tuesday night, 25-23, 25-16, 25-19.

Way to Make us Proud Hawks!!

Gabby Fory was the linchpin in this grenade with 16 kills with some degree of authority.

Canyon Lake started their first set jumping out 19-10 lead before having some unforced errors that allowed the Dogs to claw back and eventually took a lead, 22-20.

Gabby Fory served for 3 points which allowed CLake to reclaim the game off a Kylee Goff kill and 25-23 back and forth contest.

In that second set, The Lake, separated with a 4 point rally opening a, 10-4 Hawk lead. This rally had Izzy Fory serving an ace combined with Gabby Fory 2 kills, Bella Biasatti kill, and a Goff block.

Marion did make a run getting the score back to a 3 point deficit, 12-10 Hawks….it was Kinsley Van Meter’s highlights that finished the Dogs in this set when she had two kills and a final point block that added an exclamation point for Canyon Lake, 25-16.

Let’s GO LAKE!

It was a 3rd set that required a Hawk comeback to send Marion back home. This set was filled with several unforced errors by the Home Team that had these Bulldogs taking a bite out of the Hawks and a 10-6 lead.

In fact, Marion led most of the set before Goff’s service with The Lake scoring 7 straight points with Kylie Rodriguez dominating with 3 kills and a block. This barrage included a Goff ace and a kill for Chloe Gray that ended with a Hawk lead, 23-19.

The game ended on CL’s next serve with a Van Meter kill followed with a Gabby Fory block.

Senior Setter Chloe Gray (28 Assists) was instrumental throughout this win setting near the net for a killing spree.

Canyon Lake will be back on their home court against Gonzales next Tuesday with their first tourney this week at Corpus Christi Spike-Fest.

Volleyball: Starts Season at The Lake, Tue 6pm Against Marion

Sunday, August 10th, 2025

Chloe Gray, Kylie Rodriguez, Gabby Fory, and Mackenzie Dorn looks to forge a playoff spot this season. Go Lake!

Hit Man says get rid of those Pests Hawks!

Canyon Lake’s Volleyball season will commence this Tuesday when Marion will travel to the Hawk Nest to open Coach Daniella Villarreal’s 3rd year

Improvement will hopefully continue this campaign after a 9 win start followed with a 17 win last year.

The Hawks missed the playoffs those first two tries in arguably one of the hardest districts in the state.

The Lake looks to change their focus for that word, ‘improvement’’, coming during their district schedule. Navarro has moved to another district this year while adding Long Creek (a new school in New Braunfels) taking that vacancy.

That will leave a recent State Champion Davenport and an always powerful Wimberley still presenting two major hurdles to clear.

                 Stay in Shape Hawks!

Fredericksburg has been a tough out these past few years leaving three schools fighting for that one more spot for a play-off chance.

Bandera who has split with Canyon Lake the last two years and already mentioned Long Creek.

Canyon Lake just finished their first week of team practice after ending last week with two scrimmages on Thursday and Friday.

Head Coach Daniella Villarreal shared her thoughts with the season gets started at 6pm Tuesday on a renovated court, “We play our best when we’re having fun and communicating well together! Our team served tough throughout the scrimmages, which helped keep opponents from running their offense. Out of all the matches, our best performance came on Day 2 against a solid Poth team. We executed well in all aspects of the game and looked like we were clicking on all cylinders.”

                              GO Lake!

Coach Villarreal continued with highlighting some of the players, “Kylie Rodriguez led the team in kills, finding smart shots offensively while also delivering tough serves and providing solid passing and defense in the back row.

Chloe Gray did an excellent job setting and running the offense, making sure all hitters were involved and in position to put the ball away.”

On thoughts as this year gets going…”We’re continuing to build our confidence and communication so we’re prepared for challenges and high-level competition. I’m excited to see this group keep working hard, growing together, and enjoying the season!”

The Hawks will travel to Corpus Christi for their first tournament starting on Friday and then back for another home game against Gonzales, Tuesday 19th starting at 6pm.

Football and Water Polo held serve last week while Volleyball broke even and Tennis continues their tough district bouts.

The Boys Water Polo (District 2-0) won their first outing (ever) against Canyon High School scoring a one goal win, 13-12. On Tuesday CL Polo will do battle against Smithson Valley (Start 5:15 Girls/6:15 Boys)  and will have Davenport to finish the pool play round later this month.

In Water Polo the schools play each team once and then will be go into pool (pardon the pun) play….1st seed playing 4th and 2nd seed playing 3rd seed.

With a win against Smithson Valley the Hawks will be guaranteed being placed 1st or 2nd. This district has all the schools in Comal County.

The Lake is the smallest school in the State of Texas which can pose a larger hurdle to clear just based on number of students to recruit for a decent roster. (hint-hint…this sport is up there with Golf for a sport to play in high school)

                         Go Hawks!

The Lady Hawk’s Water Polo team has improved by leaps and bounds this season but still might be a year away.

Volleyball had a tough loss to Blanco last Tuesday but rebounded on Friday when they beat Randolph (22-6) to get back on track. Randolph will be playing Navarro this week and that should give CL a good indication on how well they stack up to a district opponent.

“Our win vs Randolph felt good as we played a lot better than we did vs Blanco,” Head Coach Daniella Villarreal said. “Randolph is a solid team and I thought the girls did a great job executing the game plan against them.”

On how the turnaround from the Blanco happened, “After the Blanco game we talked about the importance of consistent energy, momentum, and teamwork to make the magic happen, as we felt we had lacked that on Tuesday. On Friday we did a much better job bringing the energy and teamwork that we were able to get int a rhythm and the points ending in our favor. That 3rd set (a 10-25 set back) nothing was going our way as Randolph got on a roll offensively and we struggled to put the ball away. Although the 3rd set was not even close, I was proud of the way the girls were pulling together trying to slow the game down in the huddles between points to communicate and come together.”

On who Coach Villarreal thought had their ‘A’ Game, “Super proud of Gabby Fory and Mackenzie Dorn for stepping up as they both had 13 kills. Gabby being our middle, had 33 hitting attempts with a .303 hitting percentage. So that tells me that our passing and defense did an excellent job controlling that first contact to keep our offense in system to run a quick offense in the middle.”

There will be two more non-district (La Vernia away this Friday & Luling home that next Tuesday) contests before The Lake meets Fredericksburg on Friday 27th of this month.

Cross Country did not have an official meet last week but will be back in action this Friday and Saturday in Round Rock with the Friday runs having the Hawks qualifying for being able to compete on Saturday.

Canyon Lake ‘Hawk’ Proud!!

The Lake Football team had an impressive night in Navarro after finishing with more rushing yardage than a slot-t offense.

A home game this Friday against a 5A Veterans Memorial (1-2) team as CLHS will be working on staging another win for an early 3 game winning steak.

Way to GO HAWKS Athletics!
