Lady Hawks finish strong in Hays Track Meet

Friday, March 8th, 2013

Canyon Lake Girls Track has several hurdles to clear this year in their meets.

Track and Field is one sport that a team is not limited on the number of participants that can participate. Well kinda….

Baseball you play with 9
Football you play with 11
Basketball you play with 5…

You get the idea, this sport can be dominated by teams with the most athletes many times.

Points are scored through a sixth place finisher and many times a team that will run away with a team award will be that school with many finishers that finish in that 4-6 place slot.

Look at Fredericksburg Track team and you will see many athletes scoring points which adds up.

Canyon Lake Boy’s team last year finished a distant second to Fredericksburg even though the Hawks had top finishers in several events and relays. However, where CL had one finisher, Fredericksburg would have two or more.

Boys Track Finish Well in Don Shelton Relays

Friday, March 8th, 2013

Canyon Lake Boys Track team finished a very impressive 5th place in the Don Shelton Relays on Thursday, March 7th.

The Hawks were in competition with much larger schools and held their own in amassing 69 points in this meet. There were only three points separating four schools which comprised of Canyon Lake.

Jordan Anderson was the top point athlete for the Hawks with two first place finishes in the 100 and 400 meter runs. Anderson also finished 2nd in the High Jump and ran the anchor leg of the 4×100 relay that also finished in second.

Anderson’s point tallied 32 points for the Hawks.

Christian Dittman had a CL best and finished first in the Pole Vault with a jump of 13’6.

Softball Hawks Split Two Games in Marion Tourney

Friday, March 8th, 2013

Senior McKenna Beseda Leading the Hawks

Canyon Lake Softball team split their two games yesterday in the Marion Tournament, winning against Pearsall but lost in their game with Incarnate Word.

Briana Young went two for two with a double to lead CL in the game with Pearsall as this young lady continues to produce from the plate.

Robinson pitched both games but finally ran out of gas in their game with Incarnate Word after the fifth inning with the score tied at 0-0.

Kelsey Ahrens did have two hits in this loss while Alexis Robinson had nine strikeouts and four walks.

“It was scoreless through five innings, but Robinson just got tired,” Head Coach John Gallagher commented. “But we played a good game.”

Winning a one run affair and showing up well in their loss to Incarnate Word will instill confidence in this young club as District 27-3A play will begin after Spring Break week.

The Hawks will continue their Tournament as long as the inclement weather will cooperate.

CL plays nothing but ‘Ds’ on their schedule to end the Marion Tournament…with Devine at 2pm, DeHarris at 6pm and finishing with Dilley at 8pm.

Good Luck Girls!

Hawk’s Baseball have rough day in Llano Tournament

Friday, March 8th, 2013

Southpaw Cody Powell

Canyon Lake had a bad day in Llano tournament on Thursday as they took it on the chin in games with Liberty Hill and Taylor.

In the game with Liberty Hill, CL could not solve their pitcher with a total of 13 strikeouts. When you only need your defense to field eight outs, then many times the end result will be a loss.

The Hawks did have enough base runners to do more damage, but the strikeout pitch would help the pitcher to survive for another inning.

Hawks Lose to the Billies, 8-6

Wednesday, March 6th, 2013

Senior Centerfielder Daniel Camarillo

Canyon Lake has served notice that this season there will be no cake walks in District 27-3A and laugher games.

Ten of last years district losses were by four or more runs and this time the Hawks used just two hits and left this game within two runs of staying alive.

Michael Brady had one of those hits in the form of a double and driving in two runs to get the ball rolling.

With a 6-4 lead going into the bottom of the fifth inning, CL had a chance of getting that all important win to start district play.

Four runs later by Fredericksburg had the Hawks in a hole that could not be filled and this eventual loss.

The good news is this district has three games with each school and that should give CL plenty of time to start getting those important wins.

Now it is time to get in front of that line to get some cake and eat it too!

Softball: Hawks Lose by Inches to Hyde Park, 8-7

Tuesday, March 5th, 2013

A game of inches would be a literal assessment of Tuesday’s night loss to Hyde Park at the CL’s Softball

Short Stop Vicky Henderson

Complex in their 8-7 outcome.

Two batters reached base on errors with two base hits and a walk that left two runners stranded after a ground out to the Panther third baseman. The inning did have two scores but after Vicky Henderson was called out on a slide at third left the Hawks having to claw to get in scoring position again.

That out on third would of been the tying run.

Hyde Park is a TAPPS IV school and has a good ball club, but now CL wishes they had another chance at this Panther club after getting so close for a game that looked to be a runaway.

The Panthers started the first inning with a three run home run and then added another four spot in the top of the third inning for a 7 run lead.

Canyon Lake finally scored some runs in the third giving a sense vulnerability to this Panther team.

Spark plug, McKenna Beseda started this inning reaching base on a fielding error. The Hawks finished this game with a total of six batters getting on base in this same manner.

Basketball Coaches Corner with Lucas Chapman

Monday, March 4th, 2013

The ReSporter: Your first year as a Head Coach, what would you do differently as you prepare for next year?

Coach Chapman: “I don’t know if we will do a whole lot differently going forward. I would like to think that if we continue to just do the same things and just continue the process then the results will get better. We will always emphasize the fundamentals like shooting, passing and ball-handling and work on those things day in and day out. Strategically we will do some different stuff such as picking up the pressure on defense, but we are not going to stray too far from what we have started.”

The ReSporter: What is your overall assessment of this year’s team and season?

Coach Chapman: “Although the record and results may not indicate it, I thought we did some really good things this year. Most of all I am proud about how we played and how we conducted ourselves. We played the game the right way, acted right and represented Canyon Lake the right way. We had a really good stretch of games in December where we played at a high level. We also set some individual records for the program, and we finally won a district game. I think what we did this year was lay the foundation for the future and with the program where it is now, that’s what we needed.”

Hawks Lose to Lytle, 6-5

Sunday, March 3rd, 2013

Hawks lost their first game on Saturday to the Lytle Pirates, 6-5 ending their tournament chances

Freshman Cameron Berger

of advancing to play more games.

Don’t take this wrong, but winning all your games in a tournament is not the reason why these games are scheduled. Simply put, it is for repetition for these players as they prepare for district games.

Yes, a win would of been even better, but Coach Gallagher is after a bigger goal than winning all these games. Gallagher is in evaluation mode.

CL did have a chance to win this game and might have pulled it out if the ‘time’ limit would not have stopped action. But losing a five inning affair would give the Coaches plenty of data to look at to see what they might want to do when the real season starts.

Case and point was an at bat by Freshman Cameron Berger in the top of the 5th inning.

After Kelsey Ahrens reached base on an error on the Pirate center fielder, Canyon Lake had coaxed a runner (Sharon Alexanders) to third base but two of the next two batters had struck out.

Enter Berger to the plate with two outs and the Hawks needing a run. After two pitches and two strikes, Berger was in a hole.

Hawks Lose to St. Michael’s but Get a Win Anyway

Friday, March 1st, 2013

Canyon Lake won another game on Friday night, it just so happens that it was a previous

Senior Daniel Camarillo

contest against Marble Falls as the Mustangs were playing with an ineligible player.

However, on the game played on the field tonight, Canyon Lake lost a one run game to St. Michaels as that clutch hit just could not be found.

Recap: Playing in tournaments is tough on many teams based on how deep a pitching staff they might have.

St. Michael’s was playing their second game to CL’s third game, so advantage to St. Michaels in the arms race.

This game last season might have been a laugher when you consider that the Hawks barely had nine players much less enough pitchers to put out on a mound to help give CL a chance for a win.
