CLJV take off in Second Half, Beat Llano, 40-28
The Canyon Lake Hawk’s Junior Varsity were awakened in the second half,
more importantly in the fourth quarter as they raced to a resounding 14 point victory, 42-28 over Llano Yellowjackets on Tuesday night.
The game was a defensive and poor shooting affair as both teams averaged just 11 points in the first two stanzas against a former District foe.
New transfer, Caleb Kreiger was the main force in the Hawks getting the separation for the comfortable victory.
“We have good chemistry and I’m getting to know my teammates,” Kreiger admonished. “We’re getting better the more I watch and start to play my game.”
Kreiger finished with 19 points while pulling down 13 rebounds. The most important part of that stat was the offensive rebounds by Kreiger with seven.
The whole Canyon Lake team made their living on the offensive glass as the team finished with more offensive rebounds than the easier defensive rebound. The Hawks were able to garner 23 and use that part of the game for the difference and a win.
Defense was evident with 11 steals on the floor which was one less than the total number of turnovers made by Canyon Lake.
The Hawks were also led by Andrew Riali with seven points while Javier Mendez made his presence known with four steals and two blocks in the game.
When talking to Junior Varsity Coach David Bentzen he did find a major flaw still needing help, “We need to work on our free throws!”
Reaching the charity stripe 23 times and only converting eight will tell you it does not take a math teacher to see a problem in that area.
