Girls Soccer: CL ends Season with, 3-0 Win over Wimberley
The ReSporter: Last game against Wimberley was a morale booster, tell The
ReSporter about the game and how the team played against their arch rival?
Coach Jeff Vaughn: “It is always great to end the season on a high note. We talked about this before the game and at half time as well. This game was personal to me. As a coach I always say “We” but that night I told them that “I” want a win. We started this program four years ago with this group of seniors and I told them that “I” want a win…and that “I” expected nothing less from this being their last night! As far as the game goes…we played well, and exceeded my expectations by winning 3-0…With two seniors scoring goals. Annie Jacobs scored our only goal in the first half…then shortly after the second half started she got a straight red card for a suspect tackle…but I was proud that she got a goal. We had to play about 35 minutes with only 10 versus 11…and only up a goal. I changed nothing…the girls kept their feet on the gas and Amanda Pettyjohn (a senior) and Christy Fowler added two more tallies before it was all said and done. I was a proud coach!!!”
The ReSporter: How does it feel to be one of the only CL Sport that seems to have Wimberley’s number?
Coach Vaughn: “Not much to add here as we are very level when it comes to girls soccer. Somehow we find a way to stay on top of them in this great sport. Who knows why…I am just glad we have somebody’s number!”
The ReSporter: Please comment on the Seniors and what they meant for this team.
Coach Vaughn: “Five seniors this year and they are all very different. Jessie Lann’s first season was this year, and she started out as our manager…and by mid-district she was a starter…wow! Crystal Chavez, Amanda Pettyjohn, Annie Jacobs and Danielle Carpenter started as freshman four years ago when I was named the coach. I can’t explain how much these girls meant to me and the team…not to mention how much they mean to the program as a whole. I wish them all the best in whatever they do outside the walls of Canyon Lake High School.”
The ReSporter: Now, tell us what might be in store for the Hawks as all these young players prepare for next year.
Coach Vaughn: “Plain and Simple…Hard work!!! They need to know that their end result depends on how much they put in! Commitment is key when it comes to high school athletics, and these girls need to start buying in now…as opposed to buying in next December. With all this being said, I expect big things next year as some of these girls grow and get stronger. Our Freshmen crew standout on the field and I expect to see some great soccer from Christy Fowler, Mia Hernandez and Cassandra Gomez. I also expect to see great things from Jasmine Smith who played exceptionally well in the center midfield for us all year long. I can only hope to see more great soccer from Lauren Justis, but that’s if she can stay away from injuries that have plagued her for the past three years. Time will tell as they must start working hard from this moment on.”
The ReSporter: How will the new District Alignment play out and who will be in the district?
Coach Vaughn: “New District Alignment will happen shortly after the State Championship occurs in mid-April. This process usually comes out in late April, and I look forward to that day approaching quickly. We will most likely stay grouped with Wimberley…but who knows after that. We could go north towards our old district with Wimberley, Dripping Springs, Hays, Lehman and Seguin…or maybe move South and get lumped in with Boerne and Boerne Champion. The point is that we really won’t know until it is announced…but one thing we do know…is no more Smithson Valley and New Braunfels Canyon as they moved up to Class 5A. Whatever the fate may be…we still need to push forward by working hard and hammering the things out that we know we need to work on.”
The ReSporter: Any, final thoughts?
Coach Vaughn: “Last year we only had one win and one tie in district…this year we improved our efforts with two wins and one tie in district. I told the girls after the Wimberley game that we have made a positive stride in the right direction…and as a coach…I have to like that. We must continue to make strides in the positive direction in order to one day again make it to the post-season…which is our goal every year. As far a being a young program, I view as making the playoffs one out of four years here as a great accomplishment. Our major accomplishment this year was the tie against Smithson Valley (a top 10 ranking in our region)…and I can’t wait to see what our next big accomplishment will be.
Thanks again for all your support,”
