Lady Hawks Lose to Front Runner Navarro, 50-31

Canyon Lake won the second half but lost the game with District 26-4A frontrunner Navarro last Tuesday at the Hawk Gym, 50-31.

A 21-2 whitewashing in the second quarter was all this Panther team would need as Canyon Lake lost three starters to fouls in that quarter and just did not have enough woman power to keep up with this very talented team.

Shooting foul shots was something that Navarro got used to as they scored 12 of their 50 points from the stripe.

Luckily for Canyon Lake, this part of Navarro’s game was not that lethal. The Panthers shot 36% from the line as they missed 21 shots that kept this game within reach.

Canyon Lake’s first quarter was an eye opener and not having a good second quarter was a epic fail in giving Navarro a big enough lead to rest their starters and get everyone a chance for some playtime.

“I felt we played a good half court defense,” Head Coach MaryBeth Gallagher said. “I felt in the first quarter we broke the press very well, in fact, he (Navarro’s Coach) took the press off in the first quarter, but the second quarter was a disaster for us.”

Those two points were scored with just three seconds left in the first half and was held without a basket for over eight minutes in that span.

“We beat ourselves and just had a melt down with the press and that led to their transition game which we didn’t defend well,” Coach Gallagher pressed. “I felt we did a good job on Thompson even though Kyndall (Drum) was under the weather and struggling in the game….the early foul trouble put three starters on the bench and that’s when their run started.”

Drum still finished with 11 rebounds and Freshman Reagan Heun hit double figure scoring with 10 points.

Sophomore Alexis Fullen had 7 points and 8 rebounds coming off the bench while Sarah Schneider took her great singing of the National Anthem to her game as she played one of her best games this year.

“We are keeping a positive attitude and we will be working hard to fix our mistakes quickly as I feel this game showed teams in our district that we can play with any of them and when we put together a consistent game, we can be tough to beat.”

Good showing indeed as the Lady Hawks will be off to Cuero this Friday to battle the Gobblers.
