Top 5 Games for 2014-15 School Year-Game #4
Game 5: Canyon Lake 70 Yoakum 52 Basketball
Game 4 in the count down of the Top 5 games played this past season will certainly be a surprise to some of you since this game did not involve a Varsity team.
This year, Canyon Lake had many sub-varsity teams that finished at the top district races as Mountain Valley keeps feeding some salty classes to the halls in CL that are transferring to a sporting event.
The Hawks had a break out year in Volleyball this season, but many times when a Varsity team comes through with a good season, the Freshman and Junior Varsity might not be as talented.
You might say that those Varsity teams were successful because they needed those younger players to help get them in a better position to compete in those all important district games.
Wimberley has been a thorn in the side of Hawk fans ever since the first year of competition and this past season, the Junior Varsity made great strides as they too were a much improved group of ladies that will be ready to take the baton from those Senior Volleyball players.
Canyon Lake’s Varsity finished by hitting the 30 win plateau, but one of the better games played came during a home game against Wimberley.
The Varsity had an undefeated district record as did Wimberley in the first half of the round robin of district games and the stands would fill up with more people to ever witness a home game.
Junior Varsity was playing a best of 3 set with the Texans before the two Varsity teams would meet up later that evening.
Just like the Varsity, the JV had never had a win over their friends to the North and this game would turn out to be a win for the ages or at least a game that helps other future teams, knowing that beating Wimberley can be done.
A quote from the game that would give you an idea of how intense this contest was came from a Smithson Valley transfer student.
“I came from a 5A school and I had never seen a crowd like that,” Sophomore Kaylie Duke said. “This was awesome….I knew that all of the sports are so important for Canyon Lake and this was so important for our school and our Volleyball team came together.”
Canyon Lake pulled off the win by taking 2 of 3 games and winning the first and third games, 25-21, 21-25, and 25-23.
By the time that third game was being teed up, both Wimberley and Hawk fans were filling the gym with anticipation of watching the two undefeated Varsity teams.
Wimberley had turned the tables on the Hawks by duplicating the same game Canyon Lake had won in the first game of the match, 25-21.
The Hawks had a 21-20 lead in that second game but Wimberley would get 5 points in a row to put this game into a sudden death with one more game.
Wimberley jumped out to 2 point leads twice to start the final game and in previous years, that would have spelled doom for the Hawks as those little Texans would get between the ears of Canyon Lake and another loss as a result.
Canyon Lake was behind for much of this third game and found themselves looking at a 3 point deficit, 16-19 as this third game will round the curve for the home stretch.
Landry Hollums was all over the court as it seemed Canyon Lake was on a mission to get back into this game.
Hollums was quoted after the game, “I just wanted to win and when I want to win, then I will not want to stop and that just helps me to jump even higher.”
Adrenaline is a good thing in Hollums case and it seemed to be contagious as the Hawks outscored Wimberley, 9-4 to finish off the Texans and get the deciding game in this match.
CLJV had a very balanced attack as 6 of the roster would register 2 or more kills in the match and Katherine Weber would finish with 8 kills followed by 5 each for Duke and Felicity Niestremski.
Once again a game that showed off the youth movement in Canyon Lake sports as this club will be giving the Varsity a lot of depth as the Hawks start to see if they can top a Varsity team that won 31 games last season and had a first in advancing into the Second Round.
And beating Wimberley is certainly a step in the right direction as this game was picked 4th for the season of games as the crowd was huge and a comeback win had this game feeling like a playoff game.
