MV Hawks 8A Beats Boerne, 20-12 for 2nd Championship
Another year another District Championship for the Mountain Valley 8th A team as they swept through their middle school years with two top of the heap years on the gridiron in stopping Boerne, 20-12.
“Our kids fought hard to pull out a win that sealed the district championship,” Head Coach Brandon Pawelek. “We had to overcome some costly penalties but we were able to score and come up with stops when we needed to.”
Mountain Valley found themselves down in the third quarter after a Boerne opening score to start the second half.
Then a methodical 11 play drive covering 64 yards would allow MV to take the lead and eventually the game in grand fashion.
On that clinching drive, the Hawks had two break out runs by Roberto Vargas (23 yards) and Daniel Neel (14 yards) on what would drain the clock for the rest of that third quarter.
On the first drive in the 4th quarter the Greyhounds would be stopped when, Jackson Stricker, would sack the Greyhound QB for a loss of 12 yards giving Boerne 22 yards for a first down.
“I was just going all out,” Stricker conjectured. “We tried our hardest and we just came out and did what we were suppose to do.”
That Boerne punt only traveled 11 yards and help set up Mountain Valley for a drive needing just 20 yards for another touchdown.
And that was the result as MV only took 3 plays when Vargas darted around the end for a 11 yard touchdown and 8 point lead with less than 5 minutes remaining.
The Hawk defense would come to life again when they stopped Boerne on a 4th down try at the Hawk 42 yard line.
Vargas was not only making his game shine as a runner but this young man also had a punt for 50 yards which The ReSporter has never seen in a middle school game.
“I just practice my punts,” Vargas said succinctly and to the point.
Mountain Valley did not feel the fans had enough drama decided they would fumble on their first play and help Boerne with one more chance for tying this game.
Penalties and a 20 yard run would set up Boerne at the MV 5 yard line as the Hawks held on for a win after an incompletion with no time left on the clock.
On one of those final Greyhound plays Vargas would use his speed to give chase to the Greyhound QB and what would force an errant throw and the eventual win.
“I was going hard on that last play,” Vargas said. “This game just came
down to who wanted it the most.”
Based on the final result that answer would be Mountain Valley.
Now, MVMS 8th Grade have two District Championships to hoist up into the air proudly as this group of players will be fun to watch as they enter their next football campaign as Canyon Lake Freshman.
“We had a great season and our kids worked really hard to reach our goal of winning a second consecutive district championship,” a proud Coach Pawelek finished.
Congrats and win some more team sports at Mountain Valley this year!
Go Hawks!!
