CL Hawks Dig out of a Hole in Win over Marion, 3-2
Canyon Lake’s Volleyball team had a scare on Tuesday night with the Marion Bulldogs pulling off a 5 game set in winning 3-2.
The Hawks (16-8) ran out to a comfortable first set win, 25-11 but that pillow lost it’s softness as Marion started playing better and
causing CL to start sleeping on rocks.
Digging holes is another analogy that works since the Hawks were fighting from behind for most of the night.
CL’s largest lead in that first set ballooned up to 12 points a couple of times before the Hawks put the Bulldogs away, 25-11.
The largest lead in the second set happened near the end when Marion methodically played with resolve to a 5 point lead, 22-17 leaving CL in desperation mode.
That lead whittled down to 4 points when the Bulldogs had a serve to get set point, 22-18. Faith Hasness served for one point
but CL was still in a vicarious situation to say the least.
“I think we have to learn to play our best through the whole match,” Hasness said like a coach. “We are better than that.”
Alysha Perez was the next Hawk to serve and she would serve out the win with 5 points off of 2 kills from Regan Mickey and Landry
Hollums.
The pendulum would keep swaying in favor of the home team as Marion and Canyon Lake would lose their lead from a 14-13 Hawk lead to a 4 point Bulldog serve that again had CL playing desperate for some crucial points to go home with a sweep.
This game had CL coming out of breaks with a set play to Anna Bettersworth that would always stop a Bulldog’s rally.
“We try to catch them off guard and that play makes us speed up,” Hasness said like a setter.
But winning would not happen as Marion pulled the set out in overtime, 27-25. With the win Marion would live to play again.
Canyon Lake went south quickly in that 4th set as the Hawks had 15 unforced errors to help a scrappy Bulldog team get to some
more dog bones.
Marion got a 6 point lead early in the 4th set, 12-6 and then kept that lead throughout to finish with their second win, 25-19.
CL would now play in a 5th set which had been 38 games since that had happened. The Hawks beat La Grange last year before district play in a 5 set match.
This rubber match was all Canyon Lake as this Hawk team that started the night winning, 25-11 came back into the gym to win
15-5.
“We had an inspirational timeout that carried into set 5,” Head Volleyball Coach Kim Paisley said relieved.
This crucial set had Kaylie Duke with 3 of the first 4 kills that helped set the stage for the win.
Hasness led Canyon Lake with 20 kills followed by Anna Bettersworth finishing with 12 for the night.
Hawk Kills Faith Hasness 20 Anna Bettersworth 12 Landry Hollums 9 Alysha Perez 6 Kaylie Duke 5 Paige Bower 4
That last sudden death set had no Hawk errors which translated to a win and that was certainly needed to finish off the Bulldogs
who probably looked like a Chihuahua after all the hard work on the hardwood.
Anytime you try to dig holes in the hill country then be prepared for a lot of hard work. Hopefully the next game can be in Corpus for
some beach volleyball.
Canyon Lake will now have Friday off before they go back to work next Tuesday (where else but on the road) against La Grange.
Go Hawks!!
