CL Hawks Take Weiss by Storm, 20-3
Canyon Lake took the reins starting the 2nd Half and beat the Weiss Wolves by storm, 20-3 as the Hawks will ready themselves for their first road game in Wimberley next week.
There were several starting players that were not in action for this contest, resulting in players playing in positions that are not their forte. A win is a win and now for the 3rd year in a row, Canyon Lake started a season with a, 2-0 mark with hopes of extending that streak to three with a huge rivalry game with the Texans next.
“This was a good learning experience and I was proud on how our offense came out in that second half,” Head Coach Charley Drum stated. “They had a nose guard that I doubt if we will see anyone that good again this year.”
That Weiss Nose-Guard was disrupting all of those Hawk runs that were end arounds, as most of the Hawk’s damage, were plays up the middle.
On playing so many new faces, “They (those players) had a solid performance,” Coach Drum beat.
To start this game, Jacob Ruff, was called on for four consecutive runs totaling, 49 yards and in just three more plays, Caleb Almond finished that first drive with a Hawk score, 6-0.
The Hawks would have two lost fumbles for their next two possessions and then a punt after two movement penalties that stalled CL’s next try with the ball.
Meanwhile, Weiss would cover 15 yards after taking over on the Hawk’s 2nd fumble and a Jack Byse field goal and, 6-3 lead as the 2nd quarter was just getting started.
Canyon Lake would start their next scoring drive with a Peyton McMullen keeper covering 17 yards that was followed by a Tristan Chacon 15 yard touchdown with 3 minutes remaining before half.
“On Monday we lost our starting center to a concussion and had to substitute with just two days of practice,” Offensive Coordinator Coach Moses related. On the play of Sophomore McMullen and where Coach Moses feels he is at this stage of his career, “He (McMullen) had a big run and his first two passes were well executed….the sky is the limit.”
This Hawk drive was set up by a Ruff blitz and sack resulting in a lost fumble that gave the Hawks enough momentum for getting back on track and their second score, 13-3.
CL would have one more chance before half but a sack would stall this last ditch drive.
After some halftime adjustments, The Lake would move 70 yards with only one explosive play when Rose ran for 13 yards on the second snap. Twelve snaps later Ruff would bull over the goal line for a yard and score, 20-3. This drive had 14 plays and took 7:18 off the clock before a lightning delay.
Canyon Lake’s defense continued their solid play after surrendering just 44 yards on 35 plays during the 1st Half of play as the run and pass defense was taking this game by storm, which was probably a main reason for this lightening delay.
“Their (Weiss) offense was opportunistic and they like to take their shots,” Head Defensive Coordinator Brian Hooper recalled. “We got some good experience tonight and we did well and executed.”
Coach Hooper was mentioning on how many new players in the defensive backfield for this contest.
“We preach that we need to get negative plays and I was proud of our defense as they were playing with a lot of adversity.”
The Hawks have established a decent defense so far in this early part of the season and CL’s offense continues to show signs of upping that part of their game with a Sophomore QB getting better with each snap of the ball.
Now The Lake will take a road trip to Wimberley with a chance of wrestling that, ‘Battle of the Devil’s Backbone Trophy’, back to the halls of the Hawk Nest.
Will the Hawks be ready? “This is an easy game to get ready for,” Coach Moses parted.
Go Hawks!!
