Hawk Freshman Continue Road Games with Win over Burnet, 20-6
Canyon Lake Freshman team took their Road Show to Burnet and brought down another foe and ran their District 14-4A record to 2-0 after bringing down these Bulldogs, 20-6.
The Hawk Freshman took their opening drive 62 yards and 15 plays to pay dirt when James Bates took his last rock 17 yards for a lead that would not be threatened. Bates only missed the 200 yard barrier by a few steps in last week’s win over Taylor, and was able to break it on this night when he finished with 209 yards with a respectable 10 yards per carry.
A little bit of numbers that will give an idea of how well the Hawk’s defense was performing. Burnet averaged 1 yard per snap during that first half of play and a Jeremy Greene interception that added salt to that Bulldog’s wound.
“We are going for district,” Christian Ramirez stated when talking bout this Hawk Freshman team. “We came out and played aggressive and not letting blitzes going through our line to get our backs.”
That was certainly the case on this night as there was very little resistance from these Bulldog Puppies.
“Knowing what we did we wanted to make it hard to pick on us in the line.” Ramirez said with resolve.
Braden Maxson and Dominick Vaillant added up another 123 yards rushing between themselves and each run averaging 8 yards per rush with the rest of The Lake’s backfield.
Vaillant started this game with his first rush going for 17 yards as 16 or almost half of CL’s offensive runs went for 10 yards or more as these Bulldogs were finding it hard to tackle with their Paws.
“I’m just waiting for the block by Bates and then that will tell me where I need to run,” Vaillant said when discussing on his runs around the end. “It was a tough night and we fought harder than they could handle.”
That, in it’s simplicity, tells the story on how well this Freshman team has been performing.
Burnet came out for the 2nd Half with a new found running game as the passing would not work with a paltry 5 yards thru the air for that proof.
Hence just two offensive series with a score and running out the clock with Canyon Lake’s last time with the ball. Burnet had 4 of their 7 first downs come as a result of the game officials throwing their flag on a Hawk infraction.
To start that 2nd half, Burnet was able to reach CL’s 3 yard line after failing on an ineffective 4th down play and giving Canyon Lake the ball and a 97 yard drive in 12 plays with 7 of those snaps going for 10 or more yards. It was a Bates 38 yard run helping with a boost and eventual touchdown on this drive, 20-0.
Canyon Lake’s Freshman team will need a GPS to find their home field when they will play their first home game of the season when Fredericksburg comes to the Hawk Nest next Thursday. A span of two months since this year’s game’s started and this Freshman group of players will be able to show off for all those Hawk fans that cannot get transportation for out of town games.
Go Hawks!!
