Part III For Spring Sports, Tennis & Golf

Zachary Elson & Travis Parma take a breather waiting for their next match during the Fall Campaign.

Part III for the Canyon Lake Spring Sports will continue with a preview for Tennis and Golf.
The Hawks started a Fall Tennis a couple of years back so this is the only sport to have a team playing in the Fall and Spring with different set-ups.

Spring Tennis is in a tournament format with athletes playing in only one division (Doubles/Singles) per tourney. Most will be decided in double elimination for double competition and the singles has a single win for lose format.

Divisions has Boys and Girls Singles.
Boys and Girls Doubles
And Mixed Doubles.

                Let’s Go Hawks!!

“Our spring tournament season will be kicking off on Friday, February 5th,” Head Coach Cory Mickey said. “We will have a 4 team tournament at Canyon Lake.”

What are your thoughts as you enter into springtime battles? “I am excited to get this season underway, the kids seem to enjoy tournament play in the spring where they play either singles of doubles only, unlike the fall where they play both. It’s always exciting when kids get on a roll and win a couple rounds, then start thinking about getting through to the semis or the finals with everyone watching.”

Who will you think will be playing and their division? “Zachary Elson and Colby Jackson should be my top 2 singles players on the boys side and they will compete hard to advance in a tourney. Haley Gallagher and Gabriel Lara are both players who are strong in doubles and we will be looking to replace their partners who we last go graduation last season,” Coach Mickey assessed. “I am also excited to see how sophomores Travis Parma and Tanner Adams compete as full-time varsity players this spring. They both took home some first place JV (Junior Varsity) hardware last season, so stepping up too varsity will be a challenge and great for these guys.”

There are a lot of athletes that seem to be in other sports during this time of year, how do you handle those students with practice and scheduling? “We encourage these athletes to play multiple sports in the spring, there are a lot of other sports in season, so bubbling practice time for some off these kids will be a challenge.”

What are some of those ‘other’ sports that these students will be participating in? “I have tennis kids also playing baseball, soccer, and basketball. So hopefully they can get some tennis court time in prior to tournament play!”

The Lake has had some decent golfers in past years and this group competing this year might rival some of those past teams as we catch up with Head Coach Lucas Chapman.

“I am excited about our golf season coming up,” Coach Chapman started. “If we can stay healthy and peak at the right time, our boys team has a chance to be one of the best we have ever had. I feel we have a real chance to advance to regionals with this group.”

That is some high praise and some challenging words which is one of the best ways golf players can excel as this sport is a player against a golf course more than against a player.

It would be comparable to track athletes as you need to be good enough as an individual to have good enough scores as a group to win as a team.

“My hope is Colton (Winters) can really put it all together and play to his potential. He is really talented, but he just has to be able to play his best when it really matters in district,” Coach Chapman said. “He is too good of a player not to have advanced to regionals in his career with us.”

            Way to Go Hawks!!

Coach Chapman continued, “On the girls side, Anna Hettinger will have a chance to perform well. She is one of the most experienced golfers we have had on the girls’ side. She just needs to peak at the right time.”

What other players can the Hawk Nation be watching for? “I am also excited about working with some beginner girl golfers. We have a crew what wants to learn the game. They will not have a chance to medal or anything like that, but my hope is that they can learn the game and become lifelong golfers.”

Wow, this is that one sport that The ReSporter can’t not visualize a student not wanting to be outside on a golf course and competing and enjoying the weather.

Thanks Coach and hope you can start working on your tan.
