CL Hawks Take a Small but Lethal Group to Regional Meet

These last two years have been a tough road for Track & Field as the season was cut short last year and then this season had the Snow Storm of a Lifetime wrecking several scheduled Meets.

          Way to Go Fast Hawks!!

Canyon Lake was able to get just two meets before the District 28-4A Meet last week.

Numbers for both Boys and Girls were not enough to participants for securing enough points for a good showing in last week’s district meet.

However, the Hawks were able to have a few of those athletes being able to secure a spot in the Regional Meet at Kingsville for this Friday & Saturday.

For the Ladies, there was one young lady that was in her first year running as a Freshman that made a mark in those long distance events.

Cadence Patterson lapped the field in her 1600 and 3200 meter runs. Patterson’s bested the mile run by 6 seconds and in the 2 mile event was record was obliterated by 30 seconds.

“Cadence was a joy to coach this year and brings something new to the table for me,” Head Girls Track Coach John Barthels said. “Varsity distance runners have been few and far between in my years at Canyon Lake. She not only beat two school records, she demolished them and works about as hard as anyone I have ever been around. She was 5th in the Area Meet which in our area is not a small task. I am super proud of her and look forward to what she can do over these next 3 years.”

Now to those Ladies that will have another go at it this week-end.

Signature Homes says, Way to Go Hawks!

Claire Schroeder ran the 300 meter hurdles with the 2nd best time in Hawk history with a 47:52 time coming in 3rd place in the Area Meet.

             Alyssa Strickland 48.43 2018

Claire Schroeder ready to take one more second off her time!!

“Claire is just full of fire and hates to lose,” Coach Barthels stated. “She came to us this year as a track runner and decided to give soccer a try and ended up being pretty legit at that sport as well. Training for track this year, due to the overlap in soccer and the injury bug, has been sparse at best and she didn’t go over a hurdle the past week in practice and made those girls that she ran against work this week for their times. She has taken almost a second off of her times each week these past 3 meets and is sitting in a possible surprise spot at regionals. I am proud of the effort she is giving on the track.”

Next up is Landry Brown who seems to be peaking at the right time coming into this week’s meet.

Brown had the 2nd highest jump in Hawk history tying Mariah Ellis and Anna Bettersworth with a 5-02 height.

regular season meet in her career,” Coach Barthels said with gratitude. “ She started her freshman year jumping 5’0” and I knew she was going to be the next best high jumper we have had. She went thought some struggles her Sophomore year and last year didn’t get a whole lot of time to work. This year she has worked hard every day and I told her at the beginning of the year that she was going to clear, 5’4” before the year was over. Week after week we messed with her approach, form, and landing to where we over corrected her natural jump and she cleared 4’10” at every meet. This last week we decided that we would just jump and have fun, no fine tuning, no messing with this or that and Bam!!…she busts out her first 5’0” jump of the season. On her first 5’2” attempt there was 3 girls left in the competion and told her, ‘you are going to Kingsville so let’s show’s what you can do.’ She cleared the bar on her second try with the best jump for her career leaving both of us wishing the bar was set at 5’6”. It was the perfect jump and she saw she could get 5’4” easily. On her first attempt at 5’4”, she was a split second away from another great jump but lost her arch and nicked the bar. The last two jumps were slips and we are at a new level this week in preparation for regionals. She is a great young lady and we understand each other and I am excited to see what happens next.”

Wow, not a lot of numbers but the ones that will be representing will set their sight on Austin and a chance of getting that last run/jump for Canyon Lake.

For the Young Men it was much the same with not as many numbers as previous seasons but a good group that will give their best this coming Friday and Saturday.

CL had Senior Will Hillenbrand finish first in the Area Meet tying his previous best at 14 feet.

:Will has been improving each week and is performing the best than he has during his vaulting career,” Head Boys Track Coach Troy Moses assessed. “I look forward to seeing what he can do at the regionals.”

Shayne Moss will be competing in 3 events as he will be running the 4×100 relay, 100 meter dash, and long jump.

“Shayne has shown great strength and perseverance over the past couple of weeks,” Coach Moses boasted. “He’s nursing a groin injury and is still competing at a high level. If we can get him healthy, the sky is the limit for him.”

Moss finished first in the long jump and has uncorked a sub 11 second 100 meter last year and hopefully those injuries are in the past for this regional meet.

The 4×100 meter relay will need to improve their time but as CL can certainly attest to a faster time might have problems with the irpassing the baton or missing a lane. So, improving is important but technique is why they run these races as it will take both.

                  Hawk Proud!!

“The 4×100 relay has been in the same boat as we are nursing several injuries,” Coach Moses said. “These young men continue to overcome and give it all they got.”

And that is all you can ask for with having an opportunity to see two Seniors with one more chance to compete as Hawks.

“With our track season being canceled last year before having an opportunity to advance to the regional track meet, I’m happy for our Seniors Patrick Almond and Ryan Rivali who are getting that opportunity.”

Cameron Valigura will round out this foursome with hopes of having more chances to run for Canyon Lake.

Let’s Go Fast Hawks!!
