                Go Lake Beat Calallen!

First, a shout out to our Volleyball Squad who’s first priority this season was to make the playoffs which was accomplished in spades. CL Volleyball went 4 rounds into the post-season losing in a Regional Final which is one step from securing a Final 4 berth.

Congratulations and you can read about this season and what might be in store in The ReSporter’s Volleyball article on this site.

Curtain call for Football next with an Area Round battle this Friday at SW Legacy Stadium with kick-off 700pm. Calallen will be the next foe after disposing of Taylor in the Bi-District game last week.

Canyon Lake will be working on a chance of copying what Volleyball has just finished doing by going further than the 2nd round. The Lake has made it past this next round once back in 2017 for a team that won district and reached the next round.

The ReSporter will have an article for this week’s game while also showcasing records that have been attained this season and what might be in store.

You Make us Proud Hawks now Beat Calallen!

Girls Basketball finished this week with two losses as this year will certainly have a learning environment for a young team taking instructions from a new locally known coach Char Hutson.

This week will feature a home game with YMLA starting at 500pm with CLJV before the tip-off  Varsity following. Then a slew of contests in a 3 day tourney at San Antonio Cornerstone.

Boys Basketball starts their campaign this week on the road in Luling with sub-varsity tipping off at 500pm and then a late 800pm start for the Varsity.

The Boys will finish their week playing Sinton on Saturday with a noon start at the Hawk Nest.

Head Basketball Coach Monte Cole stated, “Starting the season on the road is never easy but kids are excited to get going and ready to play someone other than ourselves every day. I expect us to look pretty good defensively. Luling played zone last year so we’ll get an early look at our zone offense. Sinton is always good so that should be a good game at home Saturday. One thing we have this year is a lot of depth with all 11 guys (Eli Hammons will be 12 later in the year) playing and contributing.” (but that should be more weeks after The Lake beat Calallen)

Let’s Go Lake & Beat Calallen!

Go Hawks & Congrats of Special Season!

The ReSporter: Canyon Lake’s Unforgettable Season climbed some steep hills through this year share with Hawk Nation your road to success.

Coach Villarreal: “This season’s success was built day by day, from the offseason through every practice and match. Our tough district prepared the girls to face any opponent and compete at a high level, which gave them confidence going into playoffs. They learned from setbacks, believed in themselves and each other, and trusted their training. From the start, they embraced their roles, competed with heart, and showed tremendous growth. As coaches, we can provide the tools and guidance, but it’s up to the players to apply it. This group truly bought in and improved quickly because of how coachable they were.”

The ReSporter: Seniors always will rise to the occasion as leaders…give us your thoughts on this group of young ladies.

Coach Villarreal: “The seniors were the backbone of the program. Their leadership, work ethic, and commitment elevated everyone around them. They chose the team motto, “Nothing worth having comes easy,” and lived it through the hard work, sacrifices, and mental toughness required this season. Each senior played a key role on and off the court and left a lasting legacy that will inspire future teams. I am so grateful to have coached Kylie, Chloe, Mackenzie, Sabrina, and KC. And they will be greatly missed!”

Way to make your hits into a Regional Final Lake!

The ReSporter: After a short few days of rest and thinking back, as a coach, that next season always comes calling. Give the Hawk Nation on what goals and what next year might bring to the table.

Coach Villarreal: “We return a talented, motivated group of girls. I hope this season has created momentum and inspired returning and younger athletes, as well as future generations, to believe in continued success. Our goals remain the same, top competitor in district and deep playoff runs, but we will focus on building on this season’s accomplishments, working hard, never being satisfied, and dreaming bigger.”

The ReSporter: You had some high water marks with individual goals that were achieved this season. How have you balanced those milestones while keeping the team focused on getting the job done week-end and week-out.

Congrats on a Great Season Lake!

Coach Villarreal: “It’s all about team chemistry and understanding what is best for the group. Every player has a role and great value. Team success creates individual success, and when we play for each other, everyone shines. Personal milestones are celebrated while staying connected to the bigger picture and goal, which keeps the team strong and united.”

The ReSporter: A great year that finished with goals reached and passed share your final thoughts.

Coach Villarreal: “I’m incredibly proud of this group for their fight, unity, and belief in something bigger than themselves. They broke records, made history, and built a legacy that will inspire future Hawk teams!”

Once again a year that far exceeded many and the community is Proud of this group of Athletes! Way to GO LAKE!

Hawk’s, 63-19 Thorough Win Make Ducks Daffy

Saturday, November 15th, 2025

QB Jace Wheeler is adding an extra dimension to his game.                             (photo Daniel Clifton)

Plug those Leaks Lake in Your Area Battle!

Ducks are no match for a Hawk which has the ability matched by a Peregrine Falcon who can use their agility to attack and inflict injuries in regards to a duck.

For this Bi-District conquest these Ducks never made it to The Lake in time for safety after a blistering wipe-out in this Bi-District game, 63-19.

This win was so thorough these Ducks became daffy.

Even tho there was a wake-up moment to start this contest when Taylor took their second play to the house on a 74 pass play that had CLake looking at a 6 point deficit 37 seconds into this battle.

That, however, would be one of a few highlights these ducks would be able to enjoy when these Hawks devoured Taylor by scoring on all of their possessions up until the last drive that came up short which had Punter Jace Wheeler getting off a 41 yarder. Wheeler averages 41 yards on his 30 punts this season.

          Beat Calallen in Area Hawks!

While Defensively it was two interceptions (Cash Ziemba & Walker Carson) and a fumble recovery, while holding Taylor with no points and 159 yards in their second half after these Ducks had accumulated 300 first half yardage. Add a run defense that was a Trump Border Wall holding this opponent to 156 yards leaving this vulnerable Ducks to flying led by Eli (double digit tackles) Hammons and a host of other Defensive Hawks to help lead this carnage.

Hammons finished with 14 tackles 3 for loss with 5 pass break ups for a good day on the football field.

Chris Brown first rush went for 41 untouched yards forged by an offensive line that controlled this contest from the opening play. A flag football game would have been the same result.

Brown joined Tanner Faris, Tristan Chacon and Hayden Dubois who reached 4 touchdowns in a game and fell short of Jesse Horner (5) and Carter Williams (6) who reached that all-time mark in a Veterans Memorial game last year.

                            Way to GO LAKE!

Canyon Lake averaged over 7 yards per rushing attempt while CLake’s passing was just a smidgen off perfection completing 13 of the 15 passes for 220 yards.

Wheeler also showcased his feet after an 11 yarder for The Lake’s first score and finished with 31 hard ground yardage.

During that first half drives, The Lake longest scoring drive was 6 plays which was highlighted after Taylor scored that had these Ducks trailing, 21-12 early in that second period.

CL would take 5 plays using a 27 yard reception for Peyton King followed with a 13 yard pass play to Kobe Halverson that led to a 2 yard up the middle score for Brown, 28-12.

Ending that first half, Canyon Lake had an explosive drive to answer Taylor’s final score of the game with 1:33 left on the halftime clock.

Starting on CL’s 28 yard line the dismantling went thusly:

Play:
1) Hayes Holladay 14 yard run.
2) Chris Brown 19 yard run.
3) Hayes Holladay 14 yard reception.
4) Chris Brown 24 yard run.
5) Chris Brown 1 yard touchdown.

The Hawks went to their locker room sporting a, 42-19 lead and receiving the second half kick-off.

This 2nd Half opened with a ground out time consuming drive that featured a 13 play 72 yards and stick a fork in’em, 49-19 advantage.

Canyon Lake matched last year’s Bi-District game with Austin Travis with the same exact score.

Don’t Forget to Get Your Hawk Gear @ Authentic Canyon Lake’s Hawk Nation Room & The ReSporter will have upcoming Area Round information this weekend so stay tuned and Let’s GO LAKE!

Savanna Oberholtzer Signs to Play Soccer at SFA

Thursday, November 13th, 2025

Savanna Oberholtzer signs Soccer Scholarship with SFA flanked by her Dad (Mark) & Mom (Sherry).

Savanna Oberholtzer picked SFA as her next stop for her Soccer and school studies.

Savanna had already been spoken for after Lubbock Christian offered a place on their team but things got turned around recently after Coach Ben Morrison was recently hired as a SFA Coach which was a deal maker for the Lumberjacks.

“I knew the coaches and when they reached out I went there and loved everything it was nice and I will look forward to continue working on my game and keep playing there.”

On what Savanna plans to do in class? “Nursing,” said like a player dribbling down the field with an open net.

Savanna has been a trail blazer for The Lake Soccer team after becoming the all-time scorer last season passing Maddie (her sister) Oberholtzer last season.

Head Coach Kara Stracener shared her thoughts, “She is not one dimensional…in my 25 years of coaching she is in my top 3 athletes and all of those players played on a Division I College.” Coach Stracener continued, “She is important and great for our team and has raised our other players. Running track and being on the cheer team makes her a more rounded athlete when combined. As well as getting to 108 goals and 27 assists in her years at Canyon Lake.

Mark (Dad) Oberholzer shared his thoughts on this momentous day, “I’m so proud of her….she has worked her whole life for this. People see the end product when she competes but it is her whole work ethics seeing her working hard and wanting to be the best.”

“She is very competitive and playing soccer allows her to get physical on the field and when she is knocked down she gets right back up and ready to be in charge,” Sherry (Mom) Oberholtzer quipped. “She has always been in charge!”

                         Way to Go Savanna!

Savanna came to high school and took her soccer-track-cheer teams to new heights competing at the State Level whether it’s field events or running relays and 100-200 meter dash.

With her uncanny way of throwing a soccer ball with her somersault acrobatics to breaking the 12 second (11.99) 100 meter a full half second faster than CL’s #2 Alysha Perez 12.46 back in 2017. Savanna has the best long jump 18-02.75 and is presently in 3rd place for the triple jump (36-02.50) and as a team player she has been on The Lake’s All-Time Best for the 4×100 & 4×200 relay teams. Both of those relays are 2 seconds better than those 2nd place relay teams.

Canyon Lake will certainly be in the running in all of these sports above this year and chance to catch this Lumberjack taking down some trees on her way to higher lofty goals.

Way to Go Savanna & Go Lake ~ Go Lumberjacks!

Playoff week @ The Lake with CLake’s Volleyball playing a Semi-Final contest against Wimberley in San Antonio. Volleyball has disposed of Legacy Ranch, Cuero and El Campo thus far with a huge hurdle this Tuesday playing the Texans.

A Tall Order but this is why you play the game because you never know what can or will happen. One thing for sure is a Hawk Team that has been playing lights out who beat a Ricebird team much like they were playing in their district schedule by Needville.

The first serve will be at 700pm in San Antonio Blossom Center.

Football will start their post-season at a neutral site in Lockhart High School with kick-off 700pm. Taylor finished second in their Austin district and should be a good game and a chance for CLake to start another year with a bi-district battle.

The Lake had to come back last week by scoring two 4th quarter touchdowns which had CLHS scoring on all 4 possessions in that 2nd half of action.

Basketball has begun and the Ladies took Jefferson to the woodshed scoring a 73-12 victory and will have a home game this Tuesday against Smithville and then on the road to St. Mary’s.

CLake Boys Basketball had their first scrimmage in Lampasas last Saturday and will continue at Manor on Monday with their first regular season contest in Luling November 18th.

Congrats to The Lake’s Volleyball Team and good luck this week.

Go Hawks!

Volleyball: Hawk’s Eat Ricebirds, 3-1

Sunday, November 9th, 2025

Preslie Owens, Te’a Gonzales & Kylee Goff  Lined-UP & Ready to Go Hawks!

Way to Go Lake!

Canyon Lake Volleyball (24-16) is going where no other (except Boy’s Soccer) team has ever gone in The Lake’s Post Season history after a Lake sweep of El Campo (28-12) after spotting these Ricebirds that first set, 25-27, 25-17, 25-21, 25-15.

Boys Soccer made the first round in the Final 4 and now CLake will try to replicate that feat with a win this coming Tuesday at the Blossom Athletic Center Littleton Gym in San Antonio with first serve at 7:00pm.

It will be a tough opponent seeing that it is a team CL has lost 3 times this season to with that first loss early during a regular season tournament play.

Wimberley finished first in district and sport a lofty, 44-5 record entering this Regional Final battle.

                   Let’s Go Hawks!!

The Lake has hit their stride during their last three UIL Tournament season games and beating an El Campo team that finished their district with two losses to Needville while sweeping the rest of those district battles.

This night started with The Lake having a lead early, 4-1 and kept that advantage until a Ricebird 4 point rally securing an El Campo first lead, 18-13.

Canyon Lake would draw back tying, 20-20 on a Gabby Fory kill and an unforced error by EC. The Lake would continue prying with a two point lead, 23-21 but that was when El Campo would impose their will in a first set Lake loss, 27-25.

CLake’s next set was a full out blitz with all but one player scoring points off serve. In fact, CL had 4 service points of 2 or more which led to an, 18-11 Hawk advantage.

Gabby Fory was on top of her game getting 5 kills and a block during that blitz with great passes and solid assists leading to this convincing, 25-17 conquest.

During those last 3 sets had CL in single digits with unforced errors, 7 in set two ~ 8 set three ~ 6 set four.

It was that 3rd set that would see too much Rice in these Birds as The Hawks would soar and finally devour these Ricebirds. Canyon Lake & El Campo would have 8 ties during this set before taking a, 17-14 lead capped by a Chylea Gray ace that tipped the top off the net falling harmlessly to the court.

                          Way to Go Lake Volleyball.

It was a Chloe Gray kill for that final clinching point giving CL a, 2-1 lead and what would lead to an even more convincing fork (or should that be spoon) into these Ricebirds.

Izzy Fory’s service would be a separating moment in this final set with an ace that was joined with two kills from Gabby Fory and Kylie Rodriguez giving CLake a, 7-3 lead and with that separation it would be present until that final point.

Bella Biasatti had an ace and two more kills for Rodriguez and more unforced errors that had the only thing fearing El Campo would be all that Rice left on their plate, 25-15.

Lots of Hawks were flying high in this win with Gabby Fory finishing with 17 kills, Kylie Rodriguez 25 digs, and Chloe Gray’s 38 assists.

Canyon Lake continues to enjoy their ride into another week of games!

The Lake Had Right Potion in, 17-13 Win Over Pleasanton

                               Let’s Go Lake!

The Lake finished regular season with a respectable, 7-3 record and after a fourth quarter comeback win over Pleasanton will now use some momentum in their coming up Bi-District contest against an old foe Taylor Duck team this Friday in Lockhart High School with kick-off at 7:00pm.

CLake started slow with a first series fumble followed with 3 series composed of 3 plays and punt sequence.

Meanwhile the Eagles’ punt return on their second possession started 35 yards for a score. It would be an 8 play and 25 yard field goal, 3-0 score that would end up being all the scoring for all 24 those first half minutes.

CLHS had 89 total yards during those opening two frames with 48 yards coming on their last drive before running out of time.

Pleasanton started their second half with another 8 play drive which was helped with a 26 yard pass play and 29 yard scoring completion for a, 10-0 lead.

Hit Man says way to make your hits a winner Lake!

The Lake responded with a 10 play drive covering 46 yards and a Jack Stracener, first field goal,  traveling  31 yards and putting this battle back into a one score lead, 10-3.

This Eagle team kept soaring with another time consuming 12 play drive which would produce a 41 yard field goal. Leaving CL with a 10 point deficit two plays into that final quarter of work.

This work would need to come both offensively with at least one defensive stop.

Possessions would be treated like gold in this contest and it was the Hawk’s Special Team who helped next when Gram Simpson took his kick-off return setting only needing 57 yards to paydirt. It took 5 plays and a Simpson 4 yard run with still more work needed to be done still needing  3 points for a tie.

Pleasanton did drain more precious minutes off the clock using a 12 play drive which would leave CLake needing to go 76 yards for their final score be it field goal or touchdown.

Fifteen plays later it would be Chris Brown’s power sneak that gave CL a hard fought must win leaving this Eagle team with enough time to respond.

That Canyon Lake final drive had just two 3rd down plays but it would be a Lucas Schexnayder 20 yard catch and run to the 3 yard line that erased an earlier holding call that led to his finishing touches and Hawk with a victory.

A Hawk Defense would be key in giving CLake’s offense enough time and chance to pull this win off after scoring on all 4 possessions in that second half which turned out to be a right potion and putting those same ingredients starting this coming Friday for another win.

Canyon Lake has a, 4-0 record over Pleasanton now with those first two coming during post-season play.

Way to GO LAKE!

Some strong players were lost which opens the door for new names in search of putting their names on the lists below.

This Top Ten is visited by several former players in particular Andrew  Riali and others who have played for The Lake.

The ReSporter hopes you enjoy this compilation and look forward in covering new heights this season.

Lake’s Volleyball Beat Cuero, 25-13~25-17~26-24 Next Up El Campo

Wednesday, November 5th, 2025

Hawks advance after sweeping Cuero to Regional Finals. Let’s Go Lake!

                             Way to GO LAKE!

Canyon Lake’s Volleyball (23-16) swept through their Area Round over Cuero, 25-13, 25-17, 26-25 as they will have a short rest before facing El Campo Ricebirds (28-11) in a Regional Semi-Final battle.

The Hawks had been stuck as an Area finalist 7 times previously and now will try to up the ante with another win.

Lake Volleyball was the first sport to win a District Championship when they went undefeated during that 2015 campaign but was just short when Sealy overcame a first set Hawk win before rebounding with a, 3-1 comeback.

CLake started this night with one of their best opening sets taking these Gobblers, 25-13. Over half of those points were a result of some salty sets from Senior Chloe Gray to an array of Hawks with Te’a Gonzales starting off with 2 kills, Gabby Fory 3 kills, Preslie Owens 3 kills in succession.

                  Let’s Go Lake!

That start had The Lake enjoying an 18-7 advantage with Kylie Rodriguez serving a 5 point rally and eventual first set dominating result.

These Gobblers would hang around longer in that second set clawing back to an, 11-11 tie before CL would again be in top form outscoring Cuero, 14-6 to finish that set.

It was the third set that had more drama as both squads were tied 10 times during this set before Canyon Lake forged to a 19-14 advantage and what looked like another copy cat win.

However, it was Cuero that got some pecking (or whatever Gobblers do) and took a, 23-21 lead that had Head Coach Daniella Villarreal calling a timeout, “I just told them to take a deep breath and take it one point at a time.”

Some unforced Gobbler errors and then two kills by Gabby Fory from perfect assists for Chloe Gray to finish flatten this Area Round Road Block that allowed a smooth drive home with a trophy that hopes to have more company in the upcoming years.

This upcoming Regional Semi-Final contest has two even teams according to Max-Preps in Texas Ricebirds ranked 335~~Hawks 334, Section Ricebirds ranked 171~~Hawks 170, and State Division Ricebirds ranked 46~~ Hawks 45.

The 2025 Texas Girls Coaches Association State Volleyball Poll just came out with Canyon Lake ranked 8th in their Class 4A Division II Poll. Wimberley is ranked 3rd in this poll to give some reference.

Canyon Lake will match up this Friday in Gonzales, Texas with the winner advancing to the Regional Finals.

Let’s Go Hawks!
