The Lake did not start their game with Austin Travis very well (understatement) after posting a, 15-2 first quarter with those two lonely points courtesy of an Eli Cole put-back that had 1:30 remaining in the opening quarter.

You read that right….Canyon Lake was looking at a 15 point deficit to start this game.

Way to make some Good Hits!

A start this bad would usually bring a family conversation in the crowd of,  ‘Where would be a good place to eat after this game?’

That meal turned out to be a full buffet affair that had this Hawk team not only getting back into this game but….finishing with an 11 point win.

What was the secret sauce? A heavy dose of defense that led to 14 steals and bruises on several Hawk players going after loose balls. Add reducing turnovers down from 11 in that first frame to only two for that next 8 minutes proved to be a winning eatery.

CLHS would score 25 points during that second period and realizing a 3 point lead going into halftime, 27-23.

     Let’s Go Hawks Great Comeback!

Canyon Lake would continue their pressure starting the 2nd Half garnering their largest lead in this segment, 9 points (38-29) when Gavin Cano sank a free throw with 1:27 left before the final quarter, the Hawk lead was still tenuous tho, 40-34.

Starting that last period, two buckets for Fuentes and Torres along with assists for Torres & Rowe during the first 90 seconds gave CL a, 44-34.

The Lake kept their distance for the remainder of this quarter as Austin Travis cut into CL’s lead to 8 points while Canyon Lake was able to up their advantage to 12 points on a Fuentes bucket with 3:55 remaining, 48-36.

Basically…Canyon Lake scored 52 points in 3 quarters and outscoring these Rebels, 52-28 during that span.

Another good,  gut check,  in seeing the possibilities when communication and an all out energy burst that caused chaos on your opponent that led to good offensive play.

                            Go Lake!

Bobby Torres led The Lake with 5 assists while Josh Rowe forced 5 steals while the team reached 15 steals and assists to end this win.

Canyon Lake did finish with a 3-1 tourney record and lost in a Championship against Stephenville.

Head Coach Monte Cole commented on what the team accomplished, “I think this tournament helped us regain some confidence and start moving in the right direction. It was a great tournament for us and in championship game we played really good Stephenville team and were competitive for a majority of the game.

Coach Cole continued, “The younger guys are learning how hard you have to play at the Varsity level to win games and it’s showing. Very proud of this group of guys.”

A good showing which left the Hawk fans never being able to come to a destination for that elusive win…which made that non-decision a good decision.

Hawk Nation is Proud of The LAKE!

Hawk’s Erase 10 Point 4th Quarter Deficit in Graham Win, 47-46

Tuesday, December 30th, 2025

Hawk’s coming out of a time-out ready to implement Coach Cole’s instructions! Go Lake!

              Make us Proud Hawks!

The Canyon Lake Hawks’ basketball recent struggles received a respite after starting their Hays Tournament with two wins.

The Lake’s record was 1-8 with most of those losses coming when an illness struck during their Christmas Tourney in Lampasas.

Having a healthy team led to this two game stretch as CLHS was able to succumb their last win against Graham needing to erase a 10 point deficit with 6:17 left on a 4th quarter clock down, 44-34.

CLake answered with an all out defensive effort which led to a Bobby Torres 7 point response (2 free throws~3 pointer~2 assists) barrage which saw Torres’ assist to Anthony Hockman ending the 3rd quarter.

The Lake got the score down to a 3 points, 44-41 when Graham got a fast break two pointer which would turn out to be their last points at the 2:42 mark.

            Plug those Leaks (Turnovers) Lake!

Another combo assist to bucket when Phoenix Fuentes found Cole Dees which brought this game down to a one point, 46-45 for these Steers.

Fuentes and Dees combined for 9 assists which would have Dees curtain call when he had his twisting dance move turn into the paint while finding a wide open Hockman for that winning bucket and one point win, 47-46.

The Lake’s first win on this day was a much different style that had The Lake with a convincing, 73-25 win over Yorktown.

This win had 3 Hawks scoring double digits, Fuentes (13), Reese Pipkin (14), Torres (14) and every Hawk but one with a rebound…. this contes produced another double digit game with 18 assists and 16 steals.

The Lake had another 4th quarter awakening scoring 25 points which also produced CL’s best game this season beyond the arc with 8 makes.

Canyon Lake thus far has outscored their competition, 100 points (298-198) during those last 8 minutes.

The Lake will continue their last tourney for this season with a battle against Austin Travis with tip-off at 1:00pm this Tuesday at Barton Middle School in Kyle, Texas.

Way to GO Lake!

Hawk’s, 45-37 Win Over Bastrop Leads to Satisfying High Noon Pizza

Saturday, December 13th, 2025

Canyon Lake got an All-Meat at High Noon Pizza in the Hancock Plaza after their win over Bastrop, 45-37.

The Lake had laid a Gluten Free Pizza in their previous Burnet contest on Tuesday and knew that those type of efforts lead to an empty stomach.

This win still had some ups & downs but good times were enough to get this win with another game of double digit steals (13) which has CL averaging 14 for this season.

Cole Dees and Phoenix Fuentes both led the Hawks finishing with 12 points and a strong game for Eli Hammons with his 6 points and 9 rebounds.

Those Up times had The Lake opening up with an, 8-2 lead that got thing going before a Down episode when the Bastrop Bears worked this game back to a tie, 17 all at the 1:24 mark before half.

Canyon Lake would open the second half with an improved focus after running their lead to 9 points, 29-20 at the 4:00 minute mark in the 3rd stanza.

But another Gluten Free episode to end that quarter resulted in a, 31-30 advantage going into CL’s final quarter.

That 4th quarter had a rare event when Fuentes found himself on the charity stripe with 5:31 left in the contest. It had been 7 straight quarters of not having a chance for a free throw finally being realized.

The Lake would finish with 7 made free throws while adding a 3 pointer coming from Cole Dees and assist by Fuentes which would result in a, 40-32 lead with a little under 4 minutes remaining. Dees’ with that 3 pointer ended with 6 points in that final 8 minutes.

A good defensive effort allowing 7 points that helped Canyon Lake to rid themselves of that Gluten Free Pizza to a good tasty regular Pizza whether by the Slice or whatever size needed for this filling win.

High Noon is a new ‘Home Grown’ Pizza place right next to Authentic Canyon Lake across from Brookshire’s. Give them a try after Canyon Lake’s next win and GO Lake!

Go Lake & Congrats on Special Season!

Head Coach Daniella Villarreal: I am extremely proud of all of our athletes and happy to see them receive the recognition they deserve.

Chloe Gray earning Outstanding Setter of the district is a huge accomplishment and reflects her impact on our team’s success. She was the heart of our offense, a steady leader, and one of the hardest-working athletes in our program. We could not have achieved what we did without her. Her presence will be greatly missed.

Kylie Rodriguez was also an integral part of our success, especially in serve receive and defense. She helped us stay in system offensively, kept rallies alive, brought consistency to our back row, and will be deeply missed.

Gabby Fory has grown tremendously each season and continued to rise to every challenge. She was a crucial part of our offense and brought both physical strength and a strong vocal presence to our team.

Preslie Owens and Izzy Fory stepped into bigger roles this season and made a significant impact. Preslie was a powerful offensive force, while Izzy was a defensive anchor who kept the floor clean and extended rallies. Both will be seniors next year, and we are excited to have them return.

                     Way to GO HAWKS!

Mackenzie Dorn’s leadership will be missed. She was a utility player for us, always willing to do whatever the team needed and making everyone around her better.

Te’a Gonzales and Kylee Goff stepped into starting roles this year and brought consistency, strong blocking, and were options for us offensively. Both will return as juniors next season.

I’m proud of all these girls and everything they accomplished this season, both on the court and in the classroom. The future is bright and we will continue to put in the work and challenge ourselves with even bigger goals!

Way to Go Lake Ladies!

Hawk’s Improbable 20 Point Comeback in, 71-70 Win Over Aransas Pass

Saturday, December 6th, 2025

Let’s Go Lake Great Win Over The Pass

Canyon Lake came back from a 20 point deficit in scoring 51 second half points for a 2 point win over Aransas Pass, 71-70.

It was an offensive rebound put-back for Anthony Hockman with three seconds left that sealed the deal.

The Lake did start this contest storming to a, 13-6 first quarter advantage.

The Aransas Pass would take over with a 24 point 2nd quarter and outscored The Lake, 17 points that produced a 12 point advantage to end that first half.

“We made a lot of mistakes early versus AP (Aransas Pass).” Head Coach Monte Cole recapped. “Unforced turnovers, missed layups, missing open guys with our passing…but the kids were resilient and kept battling to give themselves a chance and then guys made plays at the end to win.”

      Let’s Go Hawks Great Comeback!

Canyon Lake will go into Saturday game against Gainesville who has a 5-1 record, “This is a great tournament for us because we’re identifying the little things we have to do a lot better and execute more consistently”….on playing Gainesville, “They’re big and good. A good test for us.”

AP increased their halftime advantage into a 20 point (51-31) lead with just 1:43 remaining in that 3rd stanza, but this Hawk team would turn on a firehose scoring 40 points in a  9:43 time frame.

CL had 4 players reach double digit scoring with Cole Dees (14 pts) leading and being joined with Phoenix Fuentes (13), Josh Rowe (12), and Gavin Cano (10).

Way to GO LAKE!

CL got contributions from a bench that pitched in 26 points in this improbable comeback.

That last quarter was a classic being down, 51-41 to start and Fuentes with a steal (20 steals forced by CL’s defense) cut AP’s lead to single digits, 51-43 to start this avalanche of scoring.

It was a back and force game and The Lake had trouble cutting that lead below 7 points after a Dees three pointer with 6:42 left, 53-46.

The Pass pushed their advantage back to 10 points with under 6 minutes, 60-50.

In fact, CLHS cut the lead to 7 again with an old fashion 3 pointer for Fuentes before quick 4 points giving the Home Team an 11 point lead, 64-53 with 3:24 remaining.  From  there  CL  scored 18 points while giving up 7 points for AP.

CLake would score the next 7 points and finish this game with a nail biter victory.

                  Way to Go Hawk Basketball.

As Easy as ABC for a Hawk Team that ran their record to 7-1 with this win.

Cano came up with a huge dishing up a good plate of grub with 6 assists and was nails after Fuentes had to sit with foul trouble earlier in this quarter.

Scoring more points in the last stanza than CL did combined in those first two quarters was a good recipe for this improbable comeback.

Way to GO LAKE!

                         Let’s Go Lake!

Canyon Lake’s Boys Basketball has started their season with a blistering pace with a 3-1 start a loss to New Braunfels Unicorns last Wednesday.

In the Lake’s first three games, the Hawks outscored their opponents by 119 points with a very impressive 61% assist to field goals made during this 4 game start.

Nine of CL’s 11 players have 20 or more points led by Senior point guard Phoenix Fuentes.

“I thought our game with New Braunfels that we did some good things but against good teams like NB, we can’t lose focus as much as we did,” Head Coach Monte Cole assessed. “Good teams will make us pay for it. It was a great game for us to see what areas we need to improve moving forward.”

On Coach Coles thoughts on what he has seen thus far? “I like our team, we have a lot depth and good chemistry. We just have to keep improving everyday and every game. Looking forward to seeing where this team is when we get to January and February.

                           Plug those Leaks Lake!

The Hawks are averaging a little over 16 assists and 14 steals per outing and at this writing having a 65 points per game clip.

There are a lot of changeable players which gives CL’s Coaching staff many options based on in game situations.

Fuentes did turn in an impressive 14 points in that loss to the Unicorns as that team had lots of length which led to very few offensive rebounds and passing lanes not as open as in those previous three wins.

Canyon Lake will be back in action this coming week with a home game against Ingram-Moore on Tuesday (5:00pm Sub-Varsity & 6:30p Varsity tip-off).

The Lake will then be off to Aransas Pass on Thursday playing in their first tournament.

Lake Bug-a-Boos Lead to, 42-14 loss to Calallen

Saturday, November 22nd, 2025

Receiver Peyton King scored twice but ended with one TD in loss to Cats.       (photo by Daniel Clifton)

What If Canyon Lake would not have had any Bug-a-boos? That was said by many Hawk fans (maybe not a lot but at least one or two) after a, 42-14 loss to Calallen in an Area Round battle.

Turnovers was the bug-a-boo that led to this set-back with 4 that would turn this game in favor and  giving these Cats extra lives leading to a win for Calallen.

Canyon Lake started slow when the Cats only needed a 32 yard drive, for their first score, after a good kick-off runback.

Then those bug-a-boos started to appear with one on a 3rd down pass play that CL’s defense swarmed all over…yet to have a face-mask penalty that now had these Cal-Cats with a 1st down on CL’s 12 yard line. Instead of a 4th down needing 9 yards for a first. Four plays later the Lake was down, 7-0.

CLake’s first drive garnered one first down and then punted on a 4th down and two yards needed. That was followed when Cal-Cats offense with a 3 plays and punt sequence.

The Lake would take their next possession down to Calallen’s 31 yard line when that first turnover, an interception, was returned 71 yards to pay dirt. This Hawk drive had 7 plays and 3 first downs.

The dye had been cast as this first quarter had CL’s offense starting to jell while Defensively the Lake would end up allowing just 238 total yards for this game.

CL’s Offense ended up with 419 balanced yards as that first drive would be the only punt in this contest. CLHS ended with 223 rushing and 196 yards through the air.

After another interception Calallen did have an impressive drive going 16 plays with 12 of those snaps 5 yards or less. But an eventual time eating scoring drive that went 57 yards and a, 21-0 lead leaving 2:14 left before halftime.

A score would get CL back into the game by receiving the 2nd half kick-off and with a score a hawk/cat fight would ensue.

Well that first part played out when CL used 10 plays with a tush-push score for Chris Brown and a little Hawk momentum being down, 21-7.

That drive was highlighted by two consecutive pass plays. The first had QB Jace Wheeler finding Lucas Schexnayder for a 20 yard 3rd down conversion on Calallen’s 29 yard line. Schexnayder led CL with 75 receiving yards with several eye-opening catch and runs.

Wheeler then put the ball in the basket down the far sideline to Peyton King for 26 yards to the 3 yard line setting up those 3 consecutive tush-push plays.

Now a second half opening drive was going as planned with two more Schexnayder catches covering 34 yards and a 16 yard and a scamper for Gram Simpson that had CL needing 25 yards to put this contest in overdrive.

But that bug-a-boo interception presented itself, this time, the Cats returned this bug 81 yards and what would be a 14 point snafu swing and a, 28-7 score.

Wait…then the last bug-a-boo happened but this time it was a first play 53 yard run for Brown who was stripped  tackled resulting in a fumble.

Calallen took advantage of these bug-a-boos which accounted to scoring 4 TD’s.

Canyon Lake scored two more times but was only allowed to count one of those scores after a motion penalty nullified an incredible one handed catch for King being called back.

King, earlier scored on a 9 yarder late in that 3rd quarter.

Canyon Lake’s line of scrimmage was on top of their game on both sides of the ball with all the proof needed would be perusing those team stats at the end of this article.

Between the 20 yard lines it would be all Canyon Lake but with all those bug-a-boos it would be a wait till next year mantra as this season certainly had some good ole  fashion football by The Lake and this  Great Senior Class.

Way to Go Lake and next time CL can work on projecting those Bug-a-Boos on their opponents.

The ReSporter will have some Year-End rewards and season stats articles so stay tuned.

Tid-Bits: Area Round Football & Boys Basketball Win~Luling, 76-32

           Let’s Go Lake Beat Calallen!

Canyon Lake’s Area Bout and Basketball starting out of the gate strong as Thanksgiving is right around the corner.

First will be CL’s battle with Calallen this week at SW Legacy Stadium in San Antonio with kick-off at 7:00pm. The location is: 4495 Verano Pkwy #100 in Von Ormy, Texas 78073.

This is the second playoff game with these wildcats after suffering a heart break, 37-31 loss in 2020. That Covid year was a crazy time that had The Lake literally all over the field with wins and losses.

An overtime loss, 41-40 to Blanco and then seeing state finalist LBJ escape with a, 20-14 thriller and as a 4th seed beating La Vernia, 48-27 in a buzz saw game that led to a Calallen team that had won their district.

Let’s Go Hawks & Beat Calallen!

This year, the Hawks have had some up and downs but not to that 2020 team’s extent sporing a 8-3 record and with a more wide open offense.

These Wildcats have doubled their rushing this season compared to passing yardage. They have 39 touchdowns rushing and 14 through the air.

Passing might not be used as much but this team does use that part of their game to the fullest with two players as their main go-to players.

Gamez (34) and Rusher (33) receptions with the rest of this squad with a total of 11 receptions.

While there is a three headed monster on the run game. The QB Connor Klostermann has 572 yards and running backs Rodriguez (729) and Tipton (728) will give The Lake plenty of work on their defensive side of the ball.

Canyon Lake will need to keep their penalties down as they did last week in that Bi-District win and can get a run game which can open up the passing game to keep the Wildcats guessing.

Some Interesting Tid-Bits by the Numbers.

4 Is number CL has reached 8 wins in a season. (10 in 2017)
5 Receivers amassed more than 100 yards
7 Passing TD’s for QB Wheeler in playoffs #1 (Ben Fulton 4 TD’s)
9 More Turnovers CL has caused. Ranks 2nd behind 13 by 2014 Season.
40 More First Downs that Opponents
40.6 Presently Ranks 1st All-Time in Hawks Punting. Congrats
125 Yds receiving Peyton King has is 4th place in the playoffs.
134 Tackles Eli Hammons has leading the team.
492 Yds CL had last week ranks 2nd for playoffs.
649 Yds #1 QB Wheeler has passed in Playoffs (Peyton McMullen 373 yds)

Hawks Start Season Strong in 76-32 Win Over Luling

Canyon Lake’s Boys Basketball started their season last Tuesday with a, 76-32 win over Luling in a game the Hawks led throughout.

This was a no-doubter with CL ballooning the lead to 39-10 in the 2nd quarter.

The Lake was led in scoring by newcomer Cole Dees with 14 points and was followed by Bobby Torres (13) and Wyatt Sims (10) points.

All but one Hawk had a rebound and steal giving an idea of how deep this team could be this season.

Of course, there are still items Head Coach Monte Cole after his moan when free throws were brought up in the conversation. The Lake shot better from beyond the arc compared to their 29% charity stripe performance.

Canyon Lake will open at The Hawk Nest this Saturday against Sinton with a tip-off at 11am for sub-varsity and then a noon start for the Varsity.

                Go Lake Beat Calallen!

First, a shout out to our Volleyball Squad who’s first priority this season was to make the playoffs which was accomplished in spades. CL Volleyball went 4 rounds into the post-season losing in a Regional Final which is one step from securing a Final 4 berth.

Congratulations and you can read about this season and what might be in store in The ReSporter’s Volleyball article on this site.

Curtain call for Football next with an Area Round battle this Friday at SW Legacy Stadium with kick-off 700pm. Calallen will be the next foe after disposing of Taylor in the Bi-District game last week.

Canyon Lake will be working on a chance of copying what Volleyball has just finished doing by going further than the 2nd round. The Lake has made it past this next round once back in 2017 for a team that won district and reached the next round.

The ReSporter will have an article for this week’s game while also showcasing records that have been attained this season and what might be in store.

You Make us Proud Hawks now Beat Calallen!

Girls Basketball finished this week with two losses as this year will certainly have a learning environment for a young team taking instructions from a new locally known coach Char Hutson.

This week will feature a home game with YMLA starting at 500pm with CLJV before the tip-off  Varsity following. Then a slew of contests in a 3 day tourney at San Antonio Cornerstone.

Boys Basketball starts their campaign this week on the road in Luling with sub-varsity tipping off at 500pm and then a late 800pm start for the Varsity.

The Boys will finish their week playing Sinton on Saturday with a noon start at the Hawk Nest.

Head Basketball Coach Monte Cole stated, “Starting the season on the road is never easy but kids are excited to get going and ready to play someone other than ourselves every day. I expect us to look pretty good defensively. Luling played zone last year so we’ll get an early look at our zone offense. Sinton is always good so that should be a good game at home Saturday. One thing we have this year is a lot of depth with all 11 guys (Eli Hammons will be 12 later in the year) playing and contributing.” (but that should be more weeks after The Lake beat Calallen)

Let’s Go Lake & Beat Calallen!
