Ranch Can’t Find a Legacy in, 5-3 Loss to The Lake

Friday, May 1st, 2026

Cullen Barnhart throws another gem in Bi-District win over Legacy Ranch, 5-3.

                      Way to Go Hawks!

The Lake continued peaking at the right time scoring 5 runs and taking the lead after Legacy Ranch jumped out to a one run lead opening the game.

The Ranch made a statement to start this game with their first batter being hit by a pitch and then scored on a single by their clean-up hitter.

Luckily for the Hawk Nation this team had a penchant of bunching their arsenal during the bottom of the third inning that had 11 Hawk’s come to bat leading to this break out frame.

                          Break the Dam~ Lake!

Ranch was without a Legacy while The Lake had their only out coming from a sacrifice bunt (Archer Miller) for those first 9 players who sauntered to the plate. The damage would be 5 runs which was highlighted with a double for Bryce May along with 3 singles (Carson Walker~Cullen Barnhart~Ryan Rena), two walks (Lucas Schexnayder~Walker) and Joshua Little taking one for the team being hit by a pitch.

Game~Set~Match!

                        Way to Go Lake!

These Wranglers would make things interesting as they scored twice during their 6th frame with both runs coming from fielding errors.

Other than that, Cullen Barnhart won his 3rd game in these last 8 days with another dominant performance from the pitcher’s mound.

Barnhart has pitched 18 innings surrendering one earned run while striking out 16 during that stretch. His era (earned run average) is 0.39 with this victory helping The Lake reach 20 wins for the 5th time in the last 6 years.

The Lake has morphed into a decent outfit as this Legacy Ranch team is a much better version of a 25-4A Bi-District team.

Canyon Lake will work on eliminating these Wranglers on a rainy day that might not be realized at 7:00pm in Liberty Hill.

A third game (if needed) would be played at Lehman High School at 1:00pm on Saturday.

Meanwhile this improved version for CL will continue to work on not having The Ranch able to find nothing instead of a legacy.

Go Lake!

Lake Boy’s Preview in Kingville Region IV Meet.

Thursday, April 30th, 2026

The Lake Boy’s Track will have 7 athletes competing in 4 events in Region IV.

                    FLY  FAST HAWKS!

The Lake will be off to the races this week against Region IV schools for a chance of being in that final and ultimate prize ~  State Meet.

Track & Field is a sport where each competitor has two goals. Win an event and/or achieve a personal best (PR).

With each meet during this time of the season athletes are worked through a sieve that eventually only has two that reach that next round.

                   Go Fast Lake!

The times and distances below will not have every athlete is showing a mark.

The ReSporter only has events that involve a Hawk. The list reflects how our Lake’s time/distance squares up with other schools. This allows you to see what would need to be done to advance to State.

If athletes haven’t performed better than a Hawk Athlete then they will not have their showing~showing, unless their time or mark was close enough to make a difference.

                   Plug those Leaks Fast Lake!

Hence, that first salvo (qualifying) comes into play with that second part of achieving a  PR in their event.

Region IV in Kingsville will begin this Friday with finals for all the Field Events and 3200 Meter Run.

There were four athletes from Area Meet who made the cut for this Region Meet which will now have qualifying running events for Saturday and crowning those two athletes that make the State Meet.

The Lake Boys have four events as follows:

4x200 Meter Relay
Gage Jones, Peyton King 1:30.96
Chris Brown, Tristan Alexander

1:27.82 Wimberley
1:27.92 Lago Vista
1:28.11 Austin LBJ
1:28.42 Gonzales
1:28.89 Bay City
1:28.97 Sinton

This will be a tough road for Canyon Lake but in Relays there is more moving parts (pardon the pun) and chances for a faster school getting disqualified. With a good run a PR is possible as this time by The Lake stands as the 2nd fastest and topping that would be a great year.

1:30.29 was made back during the 2018 season with these 4 athletes.
Cardosa, Greyson Lee, Rose and Boehm.

1600 METER RUN Gibson Cover 4:41.39

4:35.28 La Feria
4:35.53 La Feria
4:37.53 Tulosa
4:38.47 Rio Grande City
4:39.28 Floresville
4:41.39 Gibson Cover

This will be interesting as Cover improved in the Area Meet right at 9 seconds and still seemed to have more in his tank.

Is it possible? Certainly as longer runs can have seconds better when adrenaline and competing against faster athletes.

Cover ran the fastest 1600 meter in Hawk history by over 4 seconds passing Alek Villavicencio’s 4:45.83 in 2023.

HIGH JUMP Peyton King 6-00
                Anthony Hockman 5-10

6-04 Floresville
6-03 Devine
6-03 Rockport
6-02 Gonzales
6-02 Cuero
6-02 La Marque

Interesting event when Hockman jumped 6-02 earlier this year so we certainly know he could reach that measure. King PRed at the Area Meet and so the question? Can he repeat another PR at Region.
Another event that anything can happen in going back 13 years ago when Marisa Ellis won State in this event and topped her all-time best by 4 inches that day. The all-time best is Jordan Anderson who reached 6-06 and performed in State the same year Ellis won the Ladies side.

TRIPLE JUMP Jacob Price 42-07

46-10 Sweeney
44-09 Cuero
44-08 Long Creek
44-02 Somerset
43-07 Devine
43-06 Lago Vista

Price will have a tough event after PRing at Area and will need to have another PR in this Meet. He did reach the 2nd best Triple Jump at Area but is still behind Caimen McDonough who jumped 43-04 during the 2018 season,

Should be a competitive meet for a Hawk Track Team that certainly PRed this season with great showings.

Way to GO LAKE!

Lady Hawk’s Region IV Ready to Make a Difference

Thursday, April 30th, 2026

Eva Zabarcencu & Sophie Eastland on qualifying blocks! Good Luck & GO HAWKS!

                         Let’s GO FAST LAKE!

The Lake will be off to the races this week when girls go against Region IV schools for a chance of being in that final and ultimate prize ~  State Meet.

Track & Field is a sport where each competitor has two goals. Win an event and/0r achieve a personal best (PR).

With each meet during this time of the season athletes are working through a sieve that eventually only have two that reach that final round.

                 Go Lake Beat Everyone!

Hence, that first salvo (qualifying) comes into play with that second part of achieving a  PR in their event.

Region IV in Kingsville will begin this Thursday with finals for all the Field Events and 3200 Meter Run.

There were four athletes from Area Meet who made the cut for this Region Meet which will now have qualifying running events for Saturday and crowning those two athletes that make the State Meet.

        Hawk Proud

The Lake Girls have eight events as follows:

THE LAKE LADIES will compete in two Relays, 100 & 200 meter dash, 3200 & 1600 meter runs, 100 & 300 Hurdles, Long Jump and Pole Vault.

4x100 Relay 47.13
Aubrey Avey, Te’a Gonzales
Shana Cutrer, Savanna Oberholtzer

Manor Tech 47.14

All other schools in this Region are in the 49 second area. CL’s time is an all time best as they topped last year’s 4×100 relay team that ran, 48.14 in the State Meet last year.

4x200 Relay 1:41.17
Aubrey Avey, Te’a Gonzales
Shana Cutrer, Savanna Oberholtzer

The Lake 1:40.76 District Meet
Calhoun 1:42.73

These Hawk ladies will attempt to break the 1:40.00 plateau and hopefully make a mark in Austin….Go Lake!

100 Meter Dash Savanna Oberholtzer 12.18

Manor Tech 11.72
El Campo 11.92
Oberholtzer 11.99 2025 Year

Two fast ladies in front of Oberholtzer but certainly in range of making State.

200 Meter Dash Te’a Gonzales 25.40

Manor Tech 24.48
El Campo 24.49
Calhoun 25.35

Gonzales is certainly in the zip code but will need to PR to have a chance for an Austin invite. The question? Can she continue to improve as the season comes into its zenith time.

1600 Meter Run Eva Zabarcencu 5:21.19
                      Sophie Eastland 5:29.69
Wimberley 5:11.95
Navarro 5:18.58

Zabarcencu (5:15.94) and Eastland (5:25.75) have run faster times than what they turned in at the Area Meet.
Certainly will have a chance for a berth going to Austin and seeing Eastland with another PR is certainly a possibility. This will be a fun race to watch.

3200 Meter Run Eva Zabarcencu 11:52.41
                      Sophie Eastland 12:08.41
Navarro 11:35.34
Wimberley 11:39.48
La Vernia 11:50.32

Another race that both Zabarcencu (11:37.79) & Eastland (11:53.29) ran faster earlier this season. So those earlier races would be enough to have a chance to Austin. Eastland being a Freshman could make her mark with several more years of reaching a Cadence Patterson all-time time. That might never happen as Patterson had an incredible race of, 10:45.53.

100 Meter Hurdles Shana Cutrer 14.99

Kingsville King 14.19
Rockport 14.48

This will take a herculean effort for Cutrer but this young lady has certainly continued to get faster and faster this season. Certainly in the realm of possibility.

Cutrer’s time is the only Hawk to break the 15 second barrier. Alyssa Strickland (15.06) could have but her final year was cut short by CHINA COVID which grounded all races which did not have to be. Just Sayn.

300 Meter Hurdles Aubrey Avey 45.50

Rockport 45.06

Avey ran a 43.03 last year and has been faster than her Area time above.
So this is certainly a possibility of going to Austin again for this Senior Hawk!

Long Jump Savanna Oberholtzer 16-10.00

Kingsville King 18-08.75
El Campo 18-06.50
Freeport 18-05.00
Calallen 18-01.75
Wimberley 17-09.00
La Vernia 17-08.50

Oberholtzer will need to reach back to last year when she set the Hawk All-Time mark of 18-05.00. If she can…then that would be a possibility for another Austin ticket.

Pole-Vault         Katelyn Lowth        11-00

Pleasanton          11-09
Rockport            11-06
Lago Vista 11-06

Lowth reached her personal best at the Area Meet and could she reach another personal best this week? Time will tell.

What we do know with this event many things could prevent athletes to reach their best with so many variables going into this most fascinating event in Track & Field.

Let’s GO FAST & JUMP FAR-HIGH LAKE!

Lake Douses Dragons, 4-1; All-Time Playoff Stats

Monday, April 27th, 2026

Time for Post Season! Let’s GO LAKE!

                  Keep it Going Hawks!!

Canyon Lake doused the Long Creek Dragons after another strong performance from Cullen Barnhart who pitched a 2 hitter in giving up one run while striking out five.

Barnhart was also instrumental in this win offensively as his double drove in two runs as The Lake plated 3 runs in that opening inning. Those runs would prove to be enough for this win.

There was rough waters starting the 4th frame when Long Creek had 6 of 7 batters able to reach base but could only garner one run.

Three Dragons reached base with two walks and a hit batter to start this roller-coaster. This ride had two players out at the plate….one on a suicide squeeze play and the other fielder’s choice.

Be Handy Hawks Baseball & Go Lake in Playoffs!

The Lake responded an inning later when Ryan Rena opened this inning with a single and then stole second base before another towering triple off the bat of Bryce May that scored Rena that got the Hawk’s lead back to three runs.

This was Bryce’s second triple this week with this hit against the wind.

Barnhart had right at 110 pitches when the last Dragon to bat swung at the first pitch for a pop-out that had the Hawks punching their dance card for another post-season chance to advance to State.

It was after that scary 4th frame that Barnhart doused these Dragons in facing 10 and getting 9 outs for those last 3 innings and an impressive outing on the mound.

The Lake will now play Legacy Ranch (17-10) for a 3 game series that starts at The Lake this Thursday at 7:00pm and then return the favor Friday at The Ranch starting at 7:00pm.

If a third game is needed then the location will be determined for a Saturday start.

Congrats and Way to GO LAKE!!

Lake JV Green No-Hit Bandera JV, Finished Season, 16-9-1

Saturday, April 25th, 2026

Hawk JV Green Pitcher Rowan Edwards had a No-No in win over Bandera.

                  Way to GO LAKE!

The Canyon Lake JV Green Baseball team finished their season capping off a huge win at Bandera, 9-2 with some timely hitting and a gem of a pitching performance.

This JV Green team finished their season completing a, 16-9-1 record and finished tied for 2nd place in district play.

Rowan Edwards threw a complete game no hitter against the Bulldogs while striking out 6 and only giving up 2 walks in this victory.

Edwards started this contest with a strike out and then after giving up a walk was redeemed when First Baseman Hudson Hastings started a 3-1-4 double play while Edwards ended each inning with a strikeout.

Josh Little was all business in Hawk’s JV Green win!

It not for a couple of errors in that final frame these Bulldogs would have gone home having Jowls without teeth.

The Hawks were led offensively by Josh Little, Brandon Rilee and Payton Vann who went a combined 6 at bats~6 runs~5 hits~& 5 RBI’s.

Coach Self was selfless in his assessment of this year, “I am extremely proud of these guys this season. They improved every week and competed for a district championship. These guys were a great group to coach and Coach Wilson and I are proud of them and our season!”

Way to GO LAKE!!

Hawk’s Pitching BeLittle’s Bandera in, 13-5 Win

Saturday, April 25th, 2026

Jacob Little was huge helping The Lake have chance making post-season.  Go Lake!

              GO LAKE Baseball

The Lake garners a play-in game with their 13-5 win over Bandera thanks to a not so Little Jacob pitching 6 innings in giving up one run while striking out 7 Bulldogs.

Yes, Jacob Little was helped by a flood of runs the top of the 6th frame as The Lake batted around while scoring 9 runs and now a date this Saturday at 2:30pm in New Braunfels’ High School against Long Creek.

The winner will have their dance card for more games in the post-season.

                  Let’s GO LAKE!

This Bandera contest was testy after, The Lake, took a 3 run lead to start this game but these Bulldogs answered with 2 runs and then added another 3 runs in that second inning which had Head Coach Victory Escamilla changing pitchers and inserting a Freshman who started his first ever varsity action.

Head Coach Victor Escamilla had this to say about Jacob Little’s pitching, “I’ve seen him enough in the sub-varsity where I had seen him with four (types of) pitches and he throws them for strikes. He’s like a coach on the field…and I told one of my coaches in the dugout, ‘When that kid graduates then I want him as one of my assistants.’  He’s always coaching and he wants to learn the game.”

            Break the Dam~ Lake!

Coach Escamilla wasn’t finished, “He can slow down the game by shutting down the run game because he can hold them to a one way lead because, there is a lefty throwing.”

Jacob Little took the BIG Stage on the mound and after giving up a run on a sacrifice fly then those jitters would be gone until that final out in the seventh frame.

Mr. Little, after his first entrance to the mound would settle in by giving up a walk (3rd inning), single (4th inning)…without any damage and then followed with a 3-up & 3-down in the 5th and 6th frame accumulating 4 strikeouts during those two innings.

Meanwhile the Lake was down 2 runs and was able to answer with one score in the third when Ryan Rena doubled and scored on a Bryce May single. These two players combined for 6 hits and 6 rbi’s in this win.

It was in that 6th inning that had Bandera’s pitcher running out of pitches and then CL took care of the Bulldogs bullpen. Canyon Lake had 13 Hawks coming to the plate which was highlighted with a towering triple off the bat for May-Day knocking in two of those runs.

The Lake had 4 consecutive hits after Gavyn Baldera was robbed after being called safe beating out an infield hit…. but an umpire conference ruled that play an out.

It would be Archer Miller legging out another infield hit as speed kills and that was CL’s main helping hand for this game. The Lake coasted while not allowing any more runs and another Hawk must win battle.

Now another contest on Saturday at 2:30pm at New Braunfels High School in realizing hopefully another play-off year!

Way to Go Lake!

Hawk’s Baseball Muster Another Win, 8-5 Over Bandera

Thursday, April 23rd, 2026

         Way to GET HITS HAWKS!

The Lake was missing two starters (pitcher & catcher) in a must(er) win contest against Bandera and came through with flying colors as Cullen Barnhart pitched 4 innings giving up one unearned run while Archer Miller was his battery mate in this conquest.

It was Barnhart’s first appearance in an official game this season which became a, ‘where has this pitcher been all season’, thoughts of grandeur.

Eight strikeouts and no walks was the perfect formula needed for The Lake while getting some help from Bandera’s pitchers who issued 9 walks while hitting three batters being enough for CL’s six hits to capitalize in scoring 8 runs.

Canyon Lake came into this contest one day later due to weather and knew that the team they are chasing for a play-off spot had won their opening game with Fredericksburg.

                Congrats Lake Baseball.

Long Creek’s  win presented a must(er) win battle with these Bulldogs needing a sweep as the only chance to realize entry to post-season.

Now, The Lake, will be doing some scoreboard watching this Friday in Bandera while needing a win and seeing who their next opponent might be on Saturday when they will face the Billies/Dragons loser.

It was the same scenario last year too…as the Hawks had to play Fredericksburg for that play-in game ironically in Wimberley where this contest was conducted after all the much needed rain.

             Proud of you Hawks!

Gram Simpson started this game getting hit by a pitch (hbp)  which allowed Simpson to own most hbp’s, passing Tanner Schultz,  with 22 for his career.

Simpson (64) was not finished tho…after working a walk later in this game which also put him #1 with that stat,  passing Tyler Pauly and Carter Williams, who finished their career with 63 base on balls.

All this to say that Simpson has been a good lead-off batter with his ability to reach base as he stands tied at 5th place all-time with Brandon Robinson who has a .505 On Base Percentage (OBP).

Carson Walker scored his 30th run thus far which is just two away from having 2nd place in runs scored for a season. Carter Williams scored 44 runs last year and Walker needs just one run in tying Hunter Anderson (’23)/Gram Simpson (’25).

Pitcher Greysen Patton did enter this must(er)  game during that last inning with two Bulldogs on base and no outs. Patton stayed in his tank striking out the side for a save.

A lot on the line this Friday’s, must(er) win for a chance of more games starting this Saturday.

Let’s GO LAKE!

            Go Hawks & Beat Bandera!

This will be the last ‘This Week’ as you can tell with only two sports that are still going on and, Baseball, could be finished if they can’t beat Bandera at least one game this week.

It is between the Hawks and Long Creek fighting for that last playoff spot.

In fact, The Lake, could win both games and still not make the post-season if the Dragons sweep Fredericksburg.

So, a Hawk sweep and a Dragon getting swept would be the best scenario because a play-in contest would not be needed.

A Lake sweep and a Dragon winning one in their series with Billies would require that play-in affair.

                 GO LAKE Baseball

That last scenario would be CLake splitting their series with Bulldogs and some heavy doing scoreboard watching hoping a LC being swept and another play-in option.

Meanwhile, Track & Field will be back in action next week and with some good performances having some athletes going to Austin later in May.

It has been a decent year for The Lake with some surprises and disappointments but The ReSporter would like to say Thanks to the followers of this sports news outlet and would welcome your ideas or thoughts for next season.

        GO LAKE!

Let’s GO Hawk Baseball & Go Fast Lake Track!

Lady Hawk’s Win Area Meet ~~Boys Send 7 to Region

Thursday, April 16th, 2026

Shana Cutrer passing the baton to Savanna Oberholtzer in CL’s winning 4×100 Relay at the Area Track Meet! Way to GO FAST LAKE!

                        Go Fast Lake!

Canyon Lake Ladies won the Area Meet scoring 114 points while having 7 Ladies punching their ticket for Kingsville, May 1st & 2nd.

It was night and day for Hawk Boys after having one (Tristan Schenk) last year The Lake added to that total with 7 more participants in scoring 42 points and placing 6th amongst the two districts.

Katelyn Lowth set a personal best reaching 11-0 in the pole vault finishing 2nd in that event. Then Eva Zabarcencu and Sophie Eastland scored 26 points in their two distance events (3200~1600 runs).

In an earlier district article these four ladies (Savanna Oberholtzer~Aubrey Avey~Te’a Gonzales~Shana Cutrer) accounted for 98 points that day in Fredericksburg.

The Fantastic Four will have a busy schedule in Kingsville participating in the following:

4x100 Relay Savanna Oberholtzer~Te’a Gonzales
               Shana Cutrer~Aubrey Avey
4x200 Relay Savanna Oberholtzer~Te’a Gonzales
               Shana Cutrer~Aubrey Avey
100 meter dash Savanna Oberholtzer
200 meter dash Te’a Gonzales
100 m hurdles Shana Cutrer
300 m hurdles Aubrey Avey
Long Jump Savanna Oberholtzer

4x200 Relay Gage Jones, Peyton King
               Chris Brown~Tristan Alexander
1600 Meter Run Gibson Cover
High Jump Peyton King~Anthony Hockman
Triple Jump Jacob Price

                      Plug those Leaks FAST LAKE!

As you can see The Fantastic had two (Cutrer~Avey) placing First in their two events while CL’s other two (Oberholtzer~Gonzales) was Second in their 100 & 200 races.

Eva Zabarcencu and Sophie Eastland have been a consistent 2nd-3rd place in those two (3200~1600) distance races. Those two events has been producing 14 points or more most of this track season.

Katelyn Lowth was able to continue Canyon Lake’s pole vault participation in Kingsville through this decade thus far as she had a personal best with her 11-00 foot vault and finishing in second place.

That night and day for The Lake’s Boys Track & Field showed a good jump from their previous year and for that matter since 2019 season.

                              Way to GO LAKE!

Peyton King won the high jump and Anthony Hockman had a 4th place finish but does have a personal best of 6-02 earlier this season at the Hawk Relays.

Jacob Price had his personal best in the triple jump when he traveled, 42-07 that placed him 2nd on CL’s All-Time Top 10 List. That jump was about 2 feet better than he had done this season but did have a better jump last year, but his PR (personal best) was over a foot better than last year.

That brings us to 1600 meter man: Gibson Cover who obliterated his PR when he finished First in the 1600 meter by improving, right at, 8 seconds from what his performed earlier this year. In fact, he has put up some good races that have his time finishing 18 seconds better than earlier this season.

First Place for Gibson Cover in his 1600 Meter Run!

This was a sweet victory after his disappointment earlier in the day in that 3200 race and then on top of that beating a Dynamite Duo Davenport runners with a Superman effort and leaving them in the dust.

The Boy’s 4×200 Relay was able to make a date in Kingsville and their time was the Second best in Hawk Annals passing former 2nd place 2017 team of, Tanner Faris~Heath McDonough~Timothy Boehm~Connor Rose & former 3rd place 2012 team of, Daniel Camarillo~Eduardo Covarrubias~Zach Henshaw~Doug Hubnik.

In two weeks this Lake Relay team is not that far off in taking first as their time was .67 of a second off needing to beat, 1:30.29 race that was reached during the 2018 season.

These marks are important as they emphasize how this coaching staff has raised the bar in those important areas that can translate into other endeavors…..especially in that sport called Football.

In two weeks The Lake will look for improvement, as The ReSporter, will have the next track article comparing other Area qualifiers and how/what this present group of Hawk Athletes will need to do in making it to Austin.

Hawk’s Baseball Get Must Game Win Over Billies, 6-2

Wednesday, April 15th, 2026

Pitcher Hayes Holladay got his 4th win this season in a needed victory over Billies.

The Lake got a win on a, must win week, over Fredericksburg, 6-2 as Canyon Lake scored all the runs needed during their opening inning.

That first frame was the CL’s first run scored in district play that had a double off Ryan Rena’s bat helping cap those tallies. Rena had his 15th double that moved him up to 10th place on the Top-Ten Career list.

Some more power was next with two solo shots of the bat of Lucas Schexnayder and Wayen Slania-Wetz who yard over the left field fence. Slania-Wetz (4) now stands at 5th place on CL’s all-time homer standings.

Pitcher Hayes Holladay was money on the mound striking out 7 Billies while giving up two walks….and a little let down with three hit batters. This win has Holladay at 10th place with 6 career wins.

A solid defense helped calm down the base paths that was present… which had this Hawk version needed for the rest of this campaign that has 3 contests remaining with a return date to Billie land this Friday.

                         GO LAKE!

The Lake will conclude district play against Bandera which lately has not been a show-up and win contest.

Gram Simpson continues his strong showing at lead-off working two walks which has tied for the most in a career 63 joined bt Tyler Pauly and Carter Williams.

Simpson’s first at bat set the stage when the Billie’s pitcher had  two called strikes before working the pitch count to 8 and a walk and eventual score.

Now the stage is set for another showdown this Friday in Freddie for a hopeful sweep.

Go Lake!
