The Lake’s Volleyball Improves to, 6-2 & Both Sub-Varsity Win

Wednesday, August 19th, 2026

Freshman Leya Campos sets up for a Charli Buskirk kill in a Hawk Freshman win over Stockdale! Go Lake!

                                Let’s GO HAWKS!

The Hawks improved to, 6-2 in a hard 5 set match that had The Lake needing to win the final two sets for the win over the Stockdale Brahmas, 21-25, 25-12, 22-25, 25-19, 15-10.

“Trying to figure out what’s working for us and what’s working for them and what’s working for them and how we can stop them…and how we can get our offense better how we can adjust our defense and I think our girls did a really good job with that especially when I started throwing in girls in different spots.”

Coach Villarreal continued and commented on those 20 blocks, “Our defense are doing a good job with getting to the right place and are adjusting right after the block and taking them down.”

                       GET’em HAWKS!

On playing 4 games back to back on Friday? The five setter are long tiring and I think we are physically and mentally ready for that.”

Presley Wheeler continues her strong start to this season with 48 assists and now has over 200 for this young campaign.

Another strong suit in this win was garnering 20 blocks led by Gabby Fory and Kylee Goff each with 6 rejections. There were 5 other Lakesters with a block.

In The Lake had double digit service errors which was certainly a rally killer that made it harder to get this offense in a rhythm.

On the flip side, Izzy Fory led the team with 7 aces during that 2nd set which helped the Hawks to never trail and 9 points scored on her serves.

                                 Way to GO LAKE!

Stockdale did apply pressure throughout and seemed to run out of power as this contest continued into that final set. This set matched the 2nd having The Lake with the lead throughout the set.

Canyon Lake’s Sub-Varsities stayed undefeated with the Freshman being the team needing to will a 2 set win streak to pull off their game.

CL’s JV rebounded after a slow start in their 2nd set but a tied game at 10 had a Hawk timeout which resulted with a, 15-5 finish to their sweep.

JV Coach Kara Barnes was all smiles with her finishing quote, “The girls did a really good job of executing our game plan. They served aggressively, communicated, and minimized their error. I am very proud of the way they came together and took care of business.”

The Sub-Varsity teams will be back in action at Lockhart next Tuesday with their first serve commencing 600pm.

The Hawk Varsity will be in their second tournament in the SAISD schools with 4 contests on Friday and will be seeded in finishing this tourney Saturday.

Way to GO LAKE!

Canyon Lake Showed Promise in Burnet Scrimmage.

Sunday, August 16th, 2026

The Lake Huddle Up after first Scrimmage comes to a close! Go Lake!

Go Lake & OK Corral Your Opponents this season!

Canyon Lake showed promise in their first scrimmage against Burnet at the Hawk Nest this past Friday in what turned out to be a very comfortable night with pleasant weather.

Another comfortable feeling had The Lake finishing strong as each 8 minute session continued through the evening.

CLHS showed a very strong passing game and the running part of the offense was evident especially at the end of this scrimmage.

                                              GO LAKE

“Thought the kids played with a lot of emotion we got better and better as the scrimmage went along which is a huge plus, the intensity was good….Burnet is always a good football team I always like to scrimmage those guys to see where we are,” Coach Parker started. “I won’t get to see those answers (on how well the team did) until I come into tomorrow and watch video. But I was pleased with the intensity…I was pleased with the improvement as the game went on and I thought we threw and caught the ball well and we still need to continue to get better in our running game but overall I could not have been more pleased with the kids.”

                            Break the Dam~ Lake!

Defensive Coordinator Coach Kurt Sloan shared his thoughts for the defensive side of the ball, “Scrimmage is about evaluation so we want to get the kids out there and see what they can do and we try not confuse them with scheme and we saw some plays that did not execute but later on they did and with the young guys that is all we are looking for and we want them to calm down and figure it out and go play football and go get tackles.”

When asked bout seeing improvement, “Yeah…it will be next week when we will be able to see that big gauge from that first to second scrimmage we should see a lot of improvement and if we don’t then we have to go back and work even harder.”

The long wait for football season started with a large crowd of Hawk fans in attendance and now another week of work before their last scrimmage at Veterans Memorial next Friday with the same start times.

Let’s GO LAKE!

CL Hawks Start Season with Win Over Marion, 3-0

Wednesday, August 12th, 2026

                      Break the Dam~ Lake!

The Lady Hawks swept Marion (25-19. 25-18, 25-15) to start their season that showed a deep roster for a team that is looking to take another step on their road in the playoffs.

Canyon Lake ran their all-time series with these Bulldogs (8-3) and never trailed in the opening set that featured a trio of Hawks with 4 kills (Gabby Fory~Preslie Owens~Kylee Goff) and three aces that had Goff securing 2 in this first set.

Owens finished in double digits 10 kills and Goff got CL’s only block and led the team with 4 aces.

Freshman Presley Wheeler made her presence in that 3rd set with two aces and a kill that provided the separation The Lake needed in getting Canyon Lake to 20 points and then coasted to a 10 point advantage in that clinching 3rd set, 25-15.

                       Way to be Handy Hawk’s!

When Head Coach Daniella Villarreal was asked what her plan was in starting their Friday Spikefest in Corpus Christi with 3 teams within a 3 hour window, “Well this game I changed the line-ups three times so in those 3 sets I had a different lineup so I’m still looking for different options and trying to figure out what is the best lineup for us to be successful. I told the girls actually that no matter the lineup I put up there I’m still feeling confident on who I put out there and us being able to execute and win the set.”

Coach Villarreal closed, “It is a really good feeling to know that I can change things up real quick and still do a really good job.”

     ‘Hawk’ Proud!

CLHS has always been in a tough district and everything at this junction of the campaign all these contests goes in preparing for playing district battles with a good mindset and confidence.

The Lake’s all-time non-district record is, 226-113 and go into this season 44 games below .500 hence taking a new approach during those games.

Both Canyon Lake’s Sub-Varsity started off with a win as the JV Green won in 3 sets, 25-10, 17-25 and 25-11 and the JV Gold swept with a, 25-11 and 25-16.

Head JV Green Coach Kara Barnes quipped, “The team showed incredible mental toughness last night. After falling behind in the second set, they refused to give up and fought to the end of the set~~a momentum that carried right into the third set, where they controlled the action from start to finish.”

Trevor Hamblet Head Coach of the JV Gold team had this to say on their win, “The Hawks played tough and with a lot of energy in their first game of the season. The girls are starting off on the right foot and seem excited to continue to grow and compete.”

Great times and as always: LETS’S GO HAWKS!!

Third in Series Hawk Offense with Quarterback

Thursday, August 6th, 2026

QB Jace Wheeler readies to take Lake past 2nd round in playoffs.

                                 GO LAKE

This year The Lake is full with hopes of a complete year from the Quarterback position as Jace Wheeler will be going into his third season at the helm.

This is the second time in football that Canyon Lake has had a 3-year starter at this position when Ben Fulton was taking snaps for 3 years during those Slot-T seasons.

Fulton, along with Jace Wheeler, are the only two quarterbacks with a better than 100% QB Rating.

Canyon Lake these past two seasons has two consecutive 8 win campaigns and Wheeler has been a part of 21 of those those games garnering a 14-8 record and will look to surpass Fulton if the Lake can reach that 88 win plateau matching those last two campaigns.

Wheeler comes into this season with a .636 winning percentage which leads all CL’s QBs while Ben Fulton, compiled a .583 percentage with his 21 wins during his 36 starts.

TOP FIVE QUARTERBACKS (based on Yardage).

Player Comp Att Pct Yds INT TD QB Rating Yds/Att TD% INT%
Jace Wheeler     238   414 .574  4348   14  56 119.2 10.50 13.3 3.4
Ross Wagliardo   308   559 .551 3896   23  28 76.6 6.97 5.0 4.1
Branson Belcher 172   339 .507  3101   10  28 97.7 9.43 8.5 3.0
Peyton McMullen  116   288 .403  2461   11  22 80.8 8.55 7.6 3.8
Ben Fulton       106   223 .475  2271 10 27 105.0 10.18 12.1 4.5

With two leading receivers who finished last year as a dynamic duo will be back with a chance to continue waking that sleeping giant in a passing game which had been dormant through a 12 year slot-T stretch.

The ReSporter’s earlier article featured skill position is worth another mention from Last Year’s Receiving Stats Below:

                 No Yds Ave Lg TD
Peyton King 44 925 21.0 82 13
Kobe Halverson 35 599 17.1 55 6
Total 79 1524 19.3 82 19

“I have two of the best receivers in this district so if I put it into their hands then that makes my game a lot easier,” QB Wheeler said. “As a team I am trying to get better than 8-4 (The Lake’s last two season record) and we are trying to go into that third round and get past that second round we will be trying to go as far as we can.”

                            Go Lake!

Another added element to Wheeler’s game last year was his run game. Wheeler had negative yardage during his Sophomore season but last year topped the 200 yards on the ground.

Having a signal caller running will add more homework for opposing defenses in preparing for The Lake.

Wheeler’s Rushing Two Year comparison.

                 Att Yds Ave Lg TD
’24 Wheeler 18 -35 -1.9 7 0
’25 Wheeler 43 207 4.8 30 2
Total 61 172 2.8 30 2

The Lake will be looking for more battles with the Junior Varsity as Jake Welkey, Jake Stringer and Jacob Little will be looking to head the class for next year’s next varsity quarterback.

Canyon Lake’s only playoff year that went past the 2nd round happened during Fulton’s last year and that stat of going further would certainly be a goal for Wheeler to pass in his final go round.

2nd in Series on Hawk Offense with Skill Players

SKILL POSITIONS

            GET HITS HAWKS!

The Lake has returning starters manning the receiving corp this season and running back will have some ‘wet behind the ears’ players that will be looking to make their mark.

CLHS has had around a 70% player rate for the third year in a row during this Summer’s Strength & Conditioning time  and from gaining speed~weight~improving their skill set  has been noticeable across the board.

With that being the case this year’s receivers with Sr. Peyton King and Jr. Kobe Halverson are bringing some impressive marks with hopes of raising their bar this go round.

For CL’s first year (2024) of debuting a new offense it was Carter Williams and Harris Gilliam who combined with 82 receptions and 1700 yards.

                          Go Hawks!

Last year had King and Halverson combining with 79 receptions and 1524 yards and was helped by a deeper pool of players from their previous campaign adding another 35 receptions ~ 624 yards between Seniors Lucas Schexnayder and Hayes Holladay.

Another added variable came from those senior running backs, Gram Simpson & Chris Brown with 26 combined receptions for another 264 yards.

Those last two points above will have more intrigue in seeing which players can fill those graduated numbers.

                  Proud of the Hawks!

This season has Senior Nico Wyckoff and Senior Aiden Boals as of this writing looking to be this year’s running backs.

Wyckoff has played the past two years but injuries have limited his footprint going into his final season. Thus far, Wyckoff has carried the ball 40 times for 211 yards and two  touchdowns.

Senior Peyton Vann will be vying for filling that slot position while Junior Thomas Inmon having his sight filling as a tight end as well as a wide receiver.

Inmon turned coaches’ heads with some early season highlight reel catches on JV as well as being able to kick a football into the end zone for starters. He was moved up early and will be counted on for garnering some important snaps.

Go Lake & OK Corral Your Opponents!

Other new names to learn will be Sr. Peyton Vann, Jr. Dario Faz and So. Caleb Cross.

Faz brings some splash plays from JV and Cross will add more depth to this receiving corp especially since Sophomores are not brought up to Varsity because Coaches are not wanting to waste valuable snaps with players watching from a sideline instead of getting starting time on Junior Varsity.

  Fly High Hawks!

A main point to take hold for this group of players comes from Head Coach Sam Parker who praised, “I can’t elaborate how well these young men have done this off-season!”

Next article will Pre-View Quarterback.

Hawk Football Three Part Series Offense: Line of Scrimmage

OFFENSIVE LINE

                                 Let’s Go Lake!

The ReSporter will start a series of articles highlighting this year’s upcoming football season.

Starting with the Offense starting with the Offensive Line~Skill Positions~Quarterback.

How this year’s Offensive Line goes should be a good starting point for this group and what might be in store after losing two starters the previous season.

An Offensive Lineman is the top group of players that act as a unit in communicating and meshing in performing in each game for a garnering a decent result.

Three years ago Coach Sam Parker stated there would be a separate group of lineman performing on offense or defense but not both.

That concept had not been the case at The Lake especially those campaigns when injuries were a problem, but after two successful campains this concept has shown success.

                  Plug those Leaks Fast Lake!

Keeping players fresher when the defense takes the field has allowed rest and teaching and those benefits have been brought to light with proof for an offensive unit that has had some eye catching numbers.

Seven times The Lake has amassed more than 4000 yards of offense and Coach Parker’s offense has two of those seasons. (4388 ’24) & (4457 ’25)

This scenario has allowed players to work and perfect their trade which has produced young men that can concentrate exclusively on either side of the ball.

“Our success up front really is going to dictate what the success of our team really is,” Offensive Line Coach Clarence Lewis stated. “We have a really good group of guys this year with some returning starters and some young guy who are going to have to step up and play.”

                          Go Hawks!

Canyon Lake lost Cayden Toon and Donovan Menchaca on the line but returns 4 with Center John Fugate anchoring the line at center. Fugate finished last season with right at 40 pancake blocks and looks to increase that total.

When asked about his 40 pancake blocks last season….Fugate was quick with his reply, “Yeah…I want to double that this year.”

Fugate continued, “We have big expectations coming into this year and we just have to prove…to come back at it. This is probably one of the stronger O-Lines that Canyon Lake has had.”

On how last year went and what to expect, “There’s a few games that we didn’t play together and we were more selfish last year and it showed like Somerset (game) and we didn’t have a good running game at all and then we have games like Taylor….that was a beautiful O-Line game.”

Sr. Parker Gordon also chimed in on how this unit has jelled during these  past few months, “I think as a whole that we are a lot better and this year we have been working on our communication by being more vocal on the line.” On goals for this season? “We want to make it into December and we have a couple of big games at the beginning of the season and I’m looking forward to it.”

GO LAKE!

Inside Offensive Lineman Anthony ‘Chuy’ Mata opined, “Our goal is to do our best….we have to just ‘impose our will on opponents’ this year.”

Canyon Lake has certainly stocked a good group of players on offense and that most important facet will come from how these Linemen can protect the quarterback and forge holes for the running game!

Next Part II: Skill Players

The Lake’s Football Schedule & New Alignment for All Sports

Thursday, May 21st, 2026

QB Jace Wheeler will be in his 3rd year with Coach Parker’s Offensive scheme. (photo by Daniel Clifton)

                              GO LAKE

Alignment for this upcoming year has presented a lot of changes for these next two years as The ReSporter will point out for each sport which schools will be battling for those coveted post-season extended seasons.

These past two campaigns had football relegated going south by playing Uvalde~Pleasanton~Somerset schools. These next two years the UIL has switched Canyon Lake back north (for the most part) by replacing the schools just mentioned with schools from the Austin area.

There is one exception being Kerrville Tivy making their appearance for the first time and now the largest district, The Lake, has played since their first season. Austin Northeast will be another school The Hawks have yet to play along with Tivy.

                   Keep it Going Hawks!

“I’m excited about the 2026-2028 UIL realignment and the challenges it presents with our new opponents,” Head Football Coach Sam Parker opined. “Competing against a district full of well-coached teams will push us to elevate our game. With these new challenges comes a significant opportunity for growth within our program. I look forward to seeing our athletes rise to the occasion and develop both individuality and as a team.”

The Hawk’s Football will switch strengths from Offense (Strength) & Defense (Work in Progress)…last year it was the defense that had more returning starters which has switched for this coming season.

Go Lake & Congrats on Great Year!

Below, you will see 8 teams now in District 13 and will have District 14 for the first round playoff opponents. There are 3 schools in this district that played The Lake during that 2 year span.

Canyon Lake had a combined 5-1 record against those three schools.

With 3 Non-District contests that have two schools, Lago Vista & Valley Creek View as first time opponents and then that Battle-of the Backbone where The Lake has had to set up a chiropractor to help all those back-pains given by these Texans who have an impressive, 15-3 record against your Hawks.

A GPS will be an useful instrument with 4 schools being first time to play for The Lake.

This year’s football schedule as well as the Hawk’s District in other sports with the District Schools that will pose those first round post-season play.

Let’s GO LAKE!
