Canyon Lake Volleyball starts season with a win over Liberty Hill after losing their first match to Clemens.

The Hawks rebounded quickly in their games with Liberty Hill as they jumped out to a 14-9 lead and increased it to a 7 point win.

In the second game, CL took advantage of Panther’s unforced errors for an easy 12 point victory and momentum going into their best of 5 third game.

The 3rd game had LH with a 14-12 lead, but the Hawks outscored the Panthers 13-6 to close out that final game.

Canyon Lake had close games with Clemens, but just could not mount any rallies to help put one of their first two games away.

“It was good we played them close,” Head Coach Kim Paisley started. “We had to work for every point and they (Clemens) came out to play with enthusiasm and they were just outdoing us at the net.”

The first two games could have gone either way as the Hawks fought back in that first game to take their first lead, 22-21 as CL was behind as much as 5 points during this contest.

CL started with the lead, 10-6, in the second game but it was short lived as Clemens answered that Hawk rally and lead throughout that second game after they wrestled away the Hawks lead.

Clemens and Canyon Lake was a nip and tuck match, as the lead never got more than 2 points as each team battled to the finish line.

The Hawks are loaded, with their largest class of Seniors in a while, as this group of players has been instrumental in bringing Canyon Lake back to the playoffs with their 2nd place district finish last season.

The ReSporter had a chance to catch this group of seniors after their win over Liberty Hill.

The ReSporter: You have had a lot of success throughout the years, how do you plan of making this year work?

Bailey Drum: “We are very close and Emma (Gray) will fit in great!”

The ReSporter: Drum was talking about newcomer Senior Emma Gray playing as the middle blocker.

Hannah Wunderlich: “We have all grown physically and mentally with our skills and now we are ready to go more rounds in the playoffs as well having a better record than last year.”

The ReSporter: What is it like to be here for your first year as a Senior?

Emma Gray: “It is hard to get the chemistry but this has not been that bad….I love the middle blocker and that is my favorite position.”

The ReSporter: It is a good fit when one of the main positions lost from last year’s group of seniors was losing Lillie Sander the middle blocker and now you get to fill that role right off the bat.

Alexis Robinson: “That was what we needed, Emma (Gray) will fill in nicely for us.”

The Resporter: What has Coach Paisley done to help you have the right mental strategy for your games?

Addison Farley: “She does not like to lose and that helps us to want to win and do better than last year’s team.”

Bailey Drum: “It started last year and it is how she teaches us to take each game.”

The ReSporter: Good luck girls and The ReSporter looks forward to following you this season! Go Hawks!!

Hawk Volleyball is Jumping into another season

Hawk Volleyball is Jumping into another season

The Volleyball season is looming and Canyon Lake finished with their best season ever last year.

The Hawks have been going at it ever since school has finished and the time to play for real is right around the corner.

Below this interview with Coach Paisley, The ReSporter, has put this year’s schedule up to district starting so you can mark your calendars for this year’s edition of Hawk Volleyball.

The ReSporter: If you could improve one aspect of the game for this season what would that be?

Coach Kim Paisley: Consistency!

The ReSporter: What has happened this Summer in the player’s league?

Coach Kim Paisley: “We had three teams in our summer league and they all did well with our first team winning it all.”

“We had all of our returnees on the first team and that consisted of 10 players….the other two teams had 8 each on their rosters.”

Canyon Lake swept Taylor in their first round in the playoffs and that was a ‘Bucket List’ item that Head Coach Kim Paisley was really wanting for this year’s team.

The Hawks finished 2nd in District 26-4A and that helped, in getting a lower seeded team in District 25-4A, the Taylor Ducks.

First off, CL had just finished their regular season by getting their 30th win and that number was 5 more than the 2009 club that finished with 25 victories.

Canyon Lake also advanced the Hawks to a better than .500 record for the first time in Hawk history. CL will go into their next season sporting a .515 winning clip. (123-119 record)

Top 5 Games-2014-15 Year: Game 3

Friday, May 29th, 2015
Hawks Beat Fredericksburg for big win in last year's season.

Hawks lose to Wimberley for another close loss in last year’s season.

Game 5: Canyon Lake 70 Yoakum 52 Basketball
Game 4: Canyon Lake vs. Wimberley 25-21, 21-25, 25-23 Volleyball
Game 3: Canyon Lake 49 Fredericksburg 31 Football

Canyon Lake had an up and down season so far up to this game with Fredericksburg and beating the Billies would go a long way in giving this team their confidence back with a total win via, offense, special teams, and defense (when they needed The stop).

Two years ago Fredericksburg beat CL at home and did not take any prisoners in this game, winning, 38-14.

This time, Canyon Lake returned the favor as the Hawks not only controlled the clock with their running game, but also had quick answer touchdowns via kick-off returns.

The Billies could not muster any momentum giving up those two special team scores and then add two costly fumbles and Canyon Lake would not look back.

One of those fumbles happened on the one inch line as a Billie lost the ball jumping over the goal line after a jarring hit.

Josh DeVries only had one carry at home in the loss, but on this night, DeVries ran for 120 yards and had Robert Woods join him when he broke the 100 yard barrier too.

Canyon Lake has now rushed for 661 yards the last two years as the Hawks have had success with Fredericksburg these past few years.

The number, 165 is what helped win this game as that number was the total yardage for the two kick-off returns by DeVries and Matt Adams.

Both returns were in the first half and both happened right when the Billies had taken a lead. The first was after a Billies field goal and then Adams return nullified a 17-14 Fredericksburg lead.

Canyon Lake would hold Fredericksburg after that second return and then score with just 1 second on the clock before halftime.

The Hawks would have the ball first to start the second stanza and after taking 7 minutes off the clock ran the score to, 35-17.

Defense would stop Freddie again and Canyon Lake would score again with a little over 3 minutes left in the third quarter, 42-17, giving your Hawks their 28 unanswered points.

Hayden Dubois would score again to finish the game, his fourth touchdown run for this game.

Special Teams: No Punts and 2 kickoff returns.                     √
Offense: Controlled the clock 33:10 and Fredericksburg 14:50. √
Defense: 2 stops saving a td and drive giving the CL a quick score. √

The win would turn out to be a game to get Canyon Lake in the Playoff door for the second year in a row.

CL had 7 losses and of those games the Hawks would lose by a touchdown or less in 6 of those evenings.

 Losses Score Difference
 Blanco 07-35 -28
 Wimberley 27-28 -01
 Lampasas 14-21 -07
 Liberty Hill 14-19 -05
 Taylor 31-33 -02
 Boerne 35-42 -07
 Rockport-Fulton 21-27 -06 overtime

That first game with Blanco would be the only contest that Canyon Lake was a no-show and a play here and there could have had a team with a much better season record.

That would explain how Canyon Lake would score more points than they gave up with 2 more losses on their ledger. (365 offense– 310 defense)

This win was big and would set up another run in those playoffs!!

Go Hawks!!

CLJV celebrating after beating Wimberley

CLJV celebrating after beating Wimberley

Game 5: Canyon Lake 70 Yoakum 52    Basketball

Game 4 in the count down of the Top 5 games played this past season will certainly be a surprise to some of you since this game did not involve a Varsity team.

This year, Canyon Lake had many sub-varsity teams that finished at the top district races as Mountain Valley keeps feeding some salty classes to the halls in CL that are transferring to a sporting event.

The Hawks had a break out year in Volleyball this season, but many times when a Varsity team comes through with a good season, the Freshman and Junior Varsity might not be as talented.

You might say that those Varsity teams were successful because they needed those younger players to help get them in a better position to compete in those all important district games.

Wimberley has been a thorn in the side of Hawk fans ever since the first year of competition and this past season, the Junior Varsity made great strides as they too were a much improved group of ladies that will be ready to take the baton from those Senior Volleyball players.

Canyon Lake’s Varsity finished by hitting the 30 win plateau, but one of the better games played came during a home game against Wimberley.

The Varsity had an undefeated district record as did Wimberley in the first half of the round robin of district games and the stands would fill up with more people to ever witness a home game.

Coaches Corner with Volleyball’s Kimberley Paisley

Friday, November 14th, 2014

The ReSporter: First off you overall thoughts on this past year…

Coach Paisley: “The season started off with goals that we as a team set as soon as the teams were made (during

two-a-days). The goals we discussed were navigated by me because I believed the things we discussed were very attainable for this group of hard working young ladies. I knew we could be co-champs, district champs, or second place in our district. I knew we were making the playoffs and going 2-3 deep in playoffs. I knew school records would be broken. When I hung the “Gold Ball” in their face (which is a trophy that will have their names on it) they were hungry and dead set on attaining these goals.”

The ReSporter: Second, what would you like to say about the Seniors on this past year’s roster?

Coach Paisley: “They were ready to make their last year memorable. They believed in their team and the program and wanted to leave a legacy. They wanted to build tradition.”

The ReSporter: What will be your goals for next year’s team and how will that be realized? (more…)
