All Decade Player Liz Carter Joins Coaching Staff
Liz Carter was added as Hawk’s Softball & Volleyball Coach.
Liz Carter, a highly acclaimed former Westlake and Corpus Christi A&M softball player, joins the athletic department as an assistant coach in softball and volleyball.

Using the word successful would be an understatement after being placed on the The American-Statesman All-Decade Softball Team. According to The American-Statesman, in 2011-13, Carter was a “Versatile athlete who also pitched and played infield driving in 41 runs with a .486 battling average as a senior.” She was also listed as a First Team All-District player her senior year as a “two-time district MVP, who also pitched and holds the single-season school record in hits (51), RBIs (41) and home runs (7) as well as career batting average (.428) and amassed 412 career strikeouts.
The Southland Conference named Carter to the 3rd Team All-ConfenceTeam during her senior year at Corpus Christi A&M.
“After setting a career high with 179 strikeouts during her senior campaign, Liz Carter received some much deserved recognition with an All-Southland Third Team selection….Carter finished the season as the strikeout leader in the Southland Conference in all games, as well as in league play. Fifty-eight of the 179 strikeout victims this year went down looking, also a Southland best. She was 10-19 with a 3.36 ERA in 204 innings of work with five shutouts during the 2017 season. Opponents hit .257 off the righty….During the 2017 opening weekend at the CenturyLink Classic, hosted by Texas State, Carter tossed her second career no-hitter with a nine-strikeout performance agains Texas Tech.”
Finally, according to the Southland Conference, “Next to Sarah Pauly, who was Carter’s pitching coach during her first two seasons on the Island, Carter ranked in the top-10 in single-game, single-season and career records more than 20 times. Her 544 career strikeouts, 47 wins, 132 appearances, 111 starts, 87 complete games and 17 shutouts sit second in the Islanders record book. Carter was just the second player in school history to record more than 150 punchouts in two seasons, coming during her junior and senior campaigns.”

“She brings positive presence and knowledge to the game and she will help solidify our defense and will improve our all around program,” head softball Coach Hayley Galloway said. “She will work with the talent we have returning and will help in refining and working with her favorite thing to do.”
“I am really excited and love the opportunity to improve the fundamentals which are things we sometimes overlook and that can be beneficial,” Coach Carter said. “Hayley and I have a lot to learn from each other. I know her as a player (they were teammates at Corpus) and look forward to coaching with her.”
Head Volleyball Coach Kim Clemons said she is also excited about having Carter part of the Volleyball program.
“Regardless of her experience, she is athletic and that will build confidence as she picks up on our drills,” Coach Clemons said. “She has been around volleyball before and I believe we are comfortable and are already communicating well. Yes, there will be challenges, but after talking with her during our interview, we just said, ‘we want her on our campus’.”
“I have athletic skills and I will be bringing leadership and culture and that is my strong suit,” Carter said. “During these past two days we have been working on our volleyball skills….especially with the freshman and we will work on our emotional and social skills.”

Carter continued, “Personally this will be my first time as a teacher (math) and being in the community, but I hope to bring a fresh energy. I already have the support and individuals to help me.”
“This school (CLHS) as a teacher is the best place to be,” Clemons added. “The support and community are the best….there is no better place to grow and you can learn so much to be a teacher here.”
Not a bad addition for the Hawk Family and it won’t be long before CL will be reaping her coaching/teaching attributes!
