CL Hawk’s Baseball Pre-Season Wrap & Top-Ten Stats
Canyon Lake’s Baseball team will have their last scrimmage this Friday and that first pitch that will start this season is at a Sinton tournament on the 23rd of February.
Rockport-Fulton will be the foe for this 1:30pm start and these Pirates are picked 2nd in their district that has Sinton as a resident). Rockport finished last season with a 23-10 record and reached the Regional Quarterfinals.
The Hawks have upped their schedule this year that starts in Sinton which happens to be the team that finished on top last year. The 2nd offering on that double header day comes against the Taylor Ducks (20-11-1 record last year and picked 8th in Region III according to the Texas High School Baseball site).
During these scrimmages, The Lake, started two weeks ago struggling against Calallen and Flour Bluff teams from the Corpus Christi area.
Since that inauguration for this season has had CL looking for any positive but on the flip-side allowed Head Coach Victor Escamilla plenty of firewood to use in getting the Hawks ready and with items that need to be worked on.
These past three scrimmages have been a complete opposite from that opening pitch with schools in the San Antonio area and Jourdanton that were quite frankly looking like CL when they played Calallen.
Going into this final scrimmage at the Hawk Nest against Somerset starting at 6pm will allow CL to get their footing and the coaches a chance to see who will be called upon and how those chosen will be placed on the field and in that all-important line-up.
CL’s Basketball crew are now 100% into the hard-ball sport and those players will be ready to enter this formula that can hopefully allow this team to best last year’s ending.
The Lake is dominated with a bus load of Seniors and based on the line-up used in these past couple of scrimmages will allow players to make a statement.
You will see some up and comers but for the most part this team will be Senior laden.
Scores at it’s core is not what coaches base their scrimmages on but those runs scored have been in abundance since that fateful scrimmage in Corpus Christi back on February 4th.
Scoring 47 runs in the last three outings can run three ways. The team played was not very good….or Canyon Lake is real good…or a little of both.
That is why they pay the Hawk’s Coaching staff the big bucks to figure those questions out.
The Hawk’s have used 8 pitchers thus far and those last 3 scrimmages combined allowing 6 runs and 10 hits for their 22 innings of work.
What needs to happen that can help fill in the holes left from last year’s team will be replacing a key piece on the pitching mound and how well the end of the batting order can be consistent enough to keep innings going or on those occasions that that part of the batting order is leading off innings to start rallies.
Defensively, the Hawks, were not at the same level as the year before and it does not take much on the defensive side that a play not being fielded well can many times be that run scored that beats a team. Especially when district and even more for the post season.
Canyon Lake has amassed 13 errors in these 5 scrimmages and some of that is expected due to experimenting with players and substitutions and just having a chance for seeing consistencies.
This Friday game should show what type of team will start the season and which players auditions have shown the coaching staff as this season gets started in a tough tournament.
Fun times and GO HAWKS!!
